For online games that rely on a central server, when the game reaches end of life the publishers/devs just turn off the servers and that's it, the game is bricked and you paid for a product you cannot use anymore. Sometimes, years later, users reverse engineer the servers and the game can be played again.

SKG is petitioning the EU for legislation to mandate that game developers must provide end users with the means to either play the game offline or host servers themselves upon the game's end of life. Publishers are whining that this will cost millions, but that's just a cope because the current business model is to turn all games into a service, when one dies you must buy and play the next. They don't want you to keep playing games they can't profit from because they decided to not support them anymore.
