Imagine you're a company and you've JUST outwaited last-gen to be done with Destiny, and you wanted to make NintenDestiny but now there's lawmakers on a governmental level saying "You can't make NintenDestiny, you must make it offline too."

I'd be pissed if I was making Zelda: Breath of the Destiny, and I suddenly couldn't justify my plan to monetize and drip-feed a AAA game's worth of content over 1 year at a time and ask for 40 extra bucks each time a year passes.

Why are you guys acting like Nintendo said anything about Stop Killing Games? They haven't. The companies listed in tweets like >>714989515 are part of an industry regulation group called Video Games Europe, and they are the ones who explicitly made a statement against Stop Killing Games. Nintendo of Europe does have someone on their board, but industry group stances on stuff like this are rarely unanimous. Maybe the Nintendo of Europe representative was frothing at the mouth angry about SKG, but more than likely it was brought up in an email chain that he barely glanced at, and probably didn't forward to the Japanese home branch.

Stumped you so hard you had to pull out a canned response
Expecting private servers to maintain the same standards that a company like Nintendo does when it comes to child safety is a big deal here, troons are always complaining that Nintendo doesn't let them voice chat with children online

That is the whole point. For online games that rely on a central server, when the game reaches end of life the publishers/devs just turn off the servers and that's it, the game is bricked and you paid for a product you cannot use anymore. Sometimes, years later, users reverse engineer the servers and the game can be played again.

SKG is petitioning the EU for legislation to mandate that game developers must provide end users with the means to either play the game offline or host servers themselves upon the game's end of life. Publishers are whining that this will cost millions, but that's just a cope because the current business model is to turn all games into a service, when one dies you must buy and play the next. They don't want you to keep playing games they can't profit from because they decided to not support them anymore.

Why do you immediately assume it would end up for profit? Current private servers are not for profit outside of free will donation, so what about this would suddenly turn them into scam central?

As it would be nintendo providing the software, and the switch is a locked down platform, they could easily make the private servers only work with 18+ accounts if it's the case, or not implement voice chat.

even being able to advertise their discord in game would be dangerous for younger players
Nintendo does a lot to keep perverted freaks from being able to contact the other players and a privately run server would never maintain the same standards.

I want to display popular games from say 2010-2020 on it.

I can't do it because it was all burned to the ground.
