There is no "AI", the alien is tethered to the player at all times and is triggered to pop out and play hide and seek upon any of the three generic actions the player can take: moving faster than a crouch walk, shooting/throwing/attacking, or pressing buttons.
The magnitude of /v/eddit's stupidity is bared by their NPC-level perception of this barebones bullshit garbage as "revolutionary", when fucking Killzone 1's Helghast on the PS2 had an equivalent level of AI sophistication.

Probably because the games would get too hard rather than fun. Remember Elon Musk's openai five that completely wiped the floor against every pro dota player? It is possible to make much smarter ai in games, but who's going to enjoy being literally demolished? No one. But I hope they can find a middle ground, playing against actual smart ai in coop games would be funny, especially strategy games. Imagine smart ai in total war games that doesn't become useless after turn 25, crazy concept

the alien ai is a bit like fear ai
not particularly complex or smart but designed well enough to make it appear so to the player. an ai director directing a simple pawn that does its own simple decisions

journo-creatures already write complaint articles about difficulty and accessibility in the games that exist now. how do you think things would play out if devs made an AI that was just flat out smarter than the average rube? it wouldn't sell.

games already have a TON of handicap mechanics applied to the AI to allow players to engage. things like groups of enemies taking turns, low accuracy, and infrequent or absent plan changing, for example. the secret conceit of vidya is that they perform better the smarter/braver/stronger they make people feel, not how true they make any of those things.

Any tard that is saying the AI for this game was smart is a tard who either never played the game or has shit pattern recognition. Like >>714991927
said, the alien doesn't "patrol the level organically" or whatever the devs claimed it would do. It's tied to your location, you move to a new area, it follows. Set off a distraction and then sneak to a new location, it moves right back to your location after it's done with the distraction. Need to backtrack for something? It backtrack's right with you.
Not to say it wasn't a cool horror alien amnesia game, but the alien ai wasn't anything special.

Anon, games have never used "real" AI, but that didn't stop people from using the term, so don't try to play word cop.

Second, it is revolutionary, because the tricks used make it very effective at playing hide and seek, and the closest we've come to it since then is the monster from Amnesia: The Bunker. 99.99% of AI opponents in games are still brain-dead retard cannon fodder and could never do what the Alien does.

the alien ai "learning" from player actions isn't particularly complex.
it has a preset "skilltree" of behaviors and when you progress to a new level or do a particular action it will unlock more of it.
it will never learn behavior that isn't intended for that game level so it can't learn past the intended game experience and even if you never do any of those actions like using the flamethrower it will still automatically unlock them a few levels later. using consumables etc only makes it do that stuff a little bit earlier but the marketing made people think it was something more complex and thus people felt like it was smarter

Because it literally is cheating in most rts/strategy games, especially old games where the ai is not advanced enough to cope. It gets a boost of resources and scripted injections of units to help counter the human player, that's not really a secret lmao

>they're mutually exclusive
The tether keeps the AI from wandering off and never coming back.

Define "organically". It's not an actual AI, so nothing it does is organic. It's a large behaviour tree designed to play hide-and-seek. Behaviour trees aren't new, but they also usually aren't taken full advantage of because people don't want the AI to be too complex a challenge.

Or maybe you're just shit at the game. Of course you're going to have the Alien on your ass the entire time when you're crouchwalking everywhere. You're seeing an AI that's leashed by the director to not find your safe spot and kill you, that's why you think it's simple.
In my playthrough I walked places when I knew the coast was clear and was often able to outpace the Alien and do a few objectives before it could catch up. I was even able to bluff it with the flamethrower once, turning the corner and hiding without ever firing off a shot.

i enjoyed playing the game more when using a mod that increases the tether range along with nightmare difficulty, so the alien can sometimes wander further away instead of always being 2 rooms away. made the motion detector a bit more interesting to use as well.

>the tricks used make it very effective at playing hide and seek
I'd argue for the opposite. The hide'n'seek is the weakest element of its behavior since it just rotates between two states: afk'ing in vents for a minute and patrolling your position for another minute.
that's literally it and you will abuse this before the end of medical section.
with how much effort they put in the aggressive behavior it's crazy how they glossed over stealth.

in vanilla you KNOW that the alien is always close by and can probably hear you. with increased range it can roam around you, you can go for longer periods without encountering it and can never be really certain if it is close by or far away instead of always just hovering a room or two away (or being stuck in a scripted vent sequence or something)

What did I say that was wrong? The xenomorph in Alien Isolation is:
#1. invincible, it has infinite HP and cannot be killed
#2. able to warp out of eyesight by crawling into an inaccessible overhead vent whenever it feels like it.
How is that meaningfully different from what I described?

I can't recall ever having trouble with this game.
The alien never felt like a threat, except for one part right after I got the flamethrower.
But I had a flamethrower, so fuck him.
I can only conclude people had trouble with this thing because they didn't know to shut the fuck up and be quiet.
Great atmosphere though.

It's always like that. FEAR also had "awesome ai" but it is just smart hiding of certain things, smoke and mirrors. As long as it works, makes people believe that ai is smart and they still outsmart it, then it does its job well.
