Japanese + Eng subs.

The English dub ain't terrible, but it does miss a few character notes there and here.
Only reason to play with Eng dub would be if you cannot read fast enough / don't understand enough Jap to follow the dialogue in the middle of action.

Now, in case of NieR Replicant, I honestly recommend the OPPOSITE:
the English dub is absolutely AMAZING, and easily beats the shit out of the Japanese dub.

Ignore all the nay sayers. Both NieR games are some of the best gaming experiences this century.

I know they're not like, super related, but if I really want to get into Nier, should I do all of Drakengard first? I'm autistic and if there is even so much as a tangential reference to drakengard in either of the Niers, I need to play them first, all endings. I want to fully experience what I only know from friends and anecdotally, as a legendary experience and story. Is Nier better served playing all 3 drakengard first, or vice versa, with all of nier serving drakengard better.
Anonymous No.715047354 [Report]
>>715047231
Nier is a continuation from ending E of Drakengard 1, so you'll want to play that at least. But beware it's going to be a godawful experience.
Anonymous No.715047385 [Report]
>dub or original
how is that even a question?
dubs are made for children because many of them can't read fast enough yet.

is this just a retard/american thing?

Play the dub because the game tends to dump critical conversations during gameplay and paying attention to both the game and subtitles is a shitty experience

i switched over to the english dub because of this, i was missing out on too many story-related quips from 2B and 9S during the combat sections

I did this (D1->Replicant->D3->Automata) and I don’t think it improved any of the games for me. I think starting with replicant is fine. Drakengard 1 is so esoteric and rough around the edges that I think most people will bounce off it. I would wholly recommend playing Drakengard 3 after Replicant since it holds up incredibly well and is more directly related to Nier than D1 is.

>I know they're not like, super related, but if I really want to get into Nier, should I do all of Drakengard first?
They actually are related,
but each game does work okay as a standalone game.

Drakengard is a... fascinating experience, but it is VERY raw in every possible way.
It's not user friendly, it's not clear what it wants you to do, and it is very grimdark from start to finish. And that's kinda its whole point.

I personally started with Automata few years ago, and I loved it so much, I hunted down all the past DrakeNier games. Going through them "backwards" felt like I was some digital archeologist, slowly unraveling ancient lore and explanations to the terminology and symbolism I'd witnessed.

in short, if you're unsure, you can just pick up Automata, and see if it's for you.

>>715047898
>I completed 2B's story but couldn't into 9S's story
You actually did NOT finish any stories, period.
The B chapter is indeed 9S' perspective of the A route, bit like Resident Evil 2's Leon/Claire route system, but not only does it flesh out and even re-contextualize A TON of what you witnessed during A run, but it all leads to the absolutely brilliant chapters C and up - where the game properly "starts" and "ends".

Not to mention 9S' gameplay is WAY more fun and varied, with tons of side content only he can access.

tl;dr: Go finish the game!
You are missing out, just like the IGN journos back in the day!

I never had a problem with this,
but then again I grew up with subs, because next to nothing is dubbed to my own language.

Yes, there are numerous references to the Drakengard games, at least half of the weapons you find are from Drakengard, and Accord (a character from D3) is referenced in Replicant at one point.

I've only played D3 though, the earlier games are too awful. (And to be fair, D3 is also pretty bad).

Dubs are a blight on the artistic intent. Them being supposedly "good" is irrelevant. They always are and always will be FANFICTION.
I dont play games to be catered to. I respect them as art. You do not

Replicant's JP dub is pretty lame as it's censored and you'll hear a fuckton of beeps whenever Kaine says literally anything

Though I guess it ultimately boils to how much of a weeb you are. The EN voice actors are all pretty famous, so if you're even asking this question you're probably a turbo weeb and won't be satisfied with anything but JP

You are missing the point, and talking like a Twatter-era zoomer homo.

Replicant's / Gestalt's Eng dub is so good, even Taro loves it. The JP one is super flat and "played safe" in comparison.

Besides, if you read English subs, you are instantly following that "fanfic shit" you talked about.

The bleeps are literally made on purpose, because Japanese has a distinct lack of "swear words" and insults as we understand them in the West. The censorship beeps are essentially signaling that she's talking such vulgarities, that it's unfitting for a fair lady.

But yes, the English dub is far superior through and through.

>artistic intent

Replicant changes landmarks depending on your system region because Taro wanted the setting to feel intimate to the player. Do you really think he wouldn't want his characters speaking the player's native language if he went to that extent? He wants themes communicated, not direct dictionary translations.
