My opinion is that people should be free to pursue whatever escapism they desire if it's not hurting other people. However, the current models have severe limitations in regards to things like memory and begin to degrade after 20-40k context which breaks the illusion really hard. I don't know how these people do it. It's not good enough to masturbate with at that point with repetition and looping and forgetfulness, and fapping is when my brain is turned off. I guess people can fall in love with an Alzheimer's patient?
It's unlikely these people were going to do anything productive with the time they spend with chatbots, so I don't see the harm in a societal sense. If you want people back in society you need to make society less awful for them and that's not going to happen. For various reasons people are checking out of society and you need to address that instead of the coping methods people use.

As someone who recently graduated with a degree in IT, and has been daily driving debian for almost 2 years now, I whole-heartedly agree on #2 and #4. Additionally, wrt #7, I often see people in tech spaces on twitter/x who are discussing a new technical thing almost every month. After being exposed to the breadth of information there is in something like (eg.) front-end web development while I was in school, I can't imagine switching frameworks/tools 24/7.
To add on all of that, I'm currently not even bothering with getting a job in tech because of the state of the market. We'll see where the wind takes me but hopefully I didn't waste 4 years of my life (fully paid with scholarships, thankfully, so at least I didn't waste money on it).

Sometimes I feel like playing squids but dont want to bother with the fleshmobs. Flying Oversaar spam and the occasional leviathan being a cosmetic stage hazard is fine, but fleshmobs annoy the shit out of me. There's no unique or engaging way to fight them, aside from "just shoot it until it dies".
