SMBv3 is encrypted, so no.

I have a very fussy kitchen wall clock. It's very old, at least 20 years. It takes 1xAA battery. It starts to lose time with NiMH. I'm guessing it's because it doesn't like voltages below 1.3V or something, and NiMH very quickly get down to that. Fine, whatever, just put in a new disposable every 6-18 months.
I took 2xAA batteries out of an old digital clock my mother had. She had it since ~2012, had never changed the batteries. It was a digital alarm clock but she never used the alarm function, so all this time it only displayed the time with a basic LCD display. I checked the batteries, Philips Powerlife. Exp 2015. Still running today in 2025. No leakage. Still at ~1.45V. Neat.
I don't use many AA powered things these days, so to use all the juice in them I put them in two clocks that each use 1xAA. One, a little bedroom alarm clock, the other the fussy kitchen wall clock I mentioned earlier.
The kitchen wall clock started losing time, ~5-10 mins a day. The small bedroom alarm clock was fine though. I swapped the cells to ensure it wasn't an individual cell thing. It wasn't, because the same things happened with the swapped cells. The kitchen wall clock again lost time, the bedroom alarm clock again didn't.
(btw i know this is mountains out of molehills stuff, but it's interesting for me as a total electronics dunce to learn some basic things, that's the point of this)
Anyway so obviously the fussy wall clock is rejecting these batteries, but why? The voltage is still high so it can't be that. It must be something else to do with the age of the batteries right? Googling suggests to me the age of the cells has increased the internal resistance. Maybe that's why.
2/2
So I buy babby's first multimeter. I measure much younger cells at around the same voltage (1.4-1.45) as these old Philips ones. Not getting any resistance reading at all on any of them. Just says 'o.l'. Unfortunately I cheaped out, it only has one resistance setting on the dial and is 'auto-sensing'. Maybe that doesn't work? Or maybe it does by design but I got a faulty one?
However I have some completely flat-out dead batteries I haven't thrown yet, I measure them for comparison.
A couple of completely dead AAA Duracells give me readings of 3.7 and 3.8 MEGAohms.
A dead 9V rectangle battery gives me a reading of about 0.4 MEGAohms. So at least it can measure resistance.
But back to these AA cells at ~1.4V. Both young cells and these older Philips ones aren't even registering, it says 'o.l'. Not even registering at 1 ohm. I think that's the lowest it measure though, 1 ohm, no less.
So if the resistance isn't even registering, the same as fresher cells at the same voltage, then what is the problem? Why is the fussy wall clock losing time with these exp-in-2015 AA cells? I mean I assume it has to be something to do with age. But what specifically? If it's not voltage, and it's not resistance...what exactly is it? I want to learn.
UPDATE SINCE WRITING THIS:
I just tested a younger alkaline, but one with a lower voltage than the old batteries. This had 1.3V but is much younger (expires 7 years from now not 10 years ago). Had it in for about 5 hours now. Hasn't lost a second. So the clock isn't even THAT fussy about the voltage.
So again, with this old battery, if it's not the voltage, there's no measurable degree of extra resistance, then it must be something else to do with age. But what???
I will almost certainly get rid of this clock and get a modern one from IKEA (because they only sell rechargables now and they explicitly pair their clocks with their batteries, so it must be suitable for use with NiMHs). But I want to figure this out first.
I'm looking to get into the world of IPTV and I was wondering if there are any good open source IPTV players out there?

I set up an Apache server with MySQL on my Windows 10 PC to run FreshRSS and an extension for it called FreshVibes. And after a bit of tinkering, it worked. I followed a YouTube guide, except for the "move the XAMPP folder to Program Files" part because that was giving me all kinds of errors that I'm not confident enough to fix. This is the guide:

Anyway, my question is: should I have done thing differently, maybe using Docker or something else? Should I have any security concerns? I'm also curious if I should now drop Livemarks (Firefox dropped Live Bookmarks for RSS, due to security concerns apparently, this extension restores them).

When you measure resistance with a multimeter, the meter is trying to put charge into something. Internal resistance is the theoretical resistor which would be present in a circuit to account for the voltage drop a component exhibits under load according to Ohm's law. You measure that with a resistor across a battery and the voltage function on the meter. It's not a literal resistor, it's the side effect of your current source having internal losses.

To measure the internal resistance you need to apply a highly resistive load to the battery, measuring without a load won't give the right results.

The XTAR Dragon charger can measure resistance, but I think that resistance is a useless metric in this case.

This may sound like a retarded question but its relevant... do these "fussy clocks" have a swinging pendulum? If so there is a little threaded bit at the base of the pendulum that raises and lowers it and thats how you fine tune the timing.
Whilst I have a 35 day spring-wound pendulum clock (no batteries) I also have a battery powered pendulum clock and adjusting the timing is the same for both

Look at the most retarded thing uttered by an LLM:
> Regular expressions are a first-class feature in Diyrbal. The user-facing syntax is r/.../, followed by optional flags (e.g., r/hello/i). This presents a classic lexing challenge: distinguishing the / that starts a regex from the / used for division.
> Languages like JavaScript solve this with a “lexer hack”—the parser feeds context back to the lexer, telling it whether a / is likely to be a division operator or the start of a regex.
How about using a stack of states in the lexer?
Also, I told this motherfucker my language is Wirthan. In all Wirthian language, the divide operator is `DIV`, and `MOD` for modulo. `SHR`/`SHL` too.
One thing both Opus 4.1 and GPT won't graps when I say my syntax is Wirthian is, they think keywords must be all-caps.
Since the 70s, all Algol-derived languages have had case-insensitive keywords.

>should I have done things differently
If it works for you then it works. You're not wrong to ask this question because some stuff can be pretty temperamental about how you host it, but I think an RSS reader with a simple SQL database is among the simpler things and there's very little that could go wrong.
>maybe using Docker or something else
The advantage of docker is that your entire setup "lives" in the containers that can be easily managed, started and stopped, migrated to another machine, recreated etc. But if your current setup works then you don't need it. You could try using it if you just want to figure it out for fun or to learn.
However IIRC docker on windows can be rather annoying because I think it has to use a VM or something (due to most docker images being linux based), so it might be more headache than it's worth.
IMO if you want to get more serious about self-hosting stuff, getting a linux box is the way to go. A raspberry pi is unironically a good tool as babby's first linux machine that can feasibly run a server with a bunch of services, doesn't use much power, is very cheap so you don't have the commitment of buying a whole second PC as a server, while also still being a separate machine so you don't get headaches from dual-booting or running VMs.
>security concerns
Assuming this is just for yourself, the main thing you need to check is that you aren't exposing this service to the outside internet. Usually there's two components to this: the server will listen to some IP(s), and this is often set to 0.0.0.0 to allow everything, or to "localhost" or 127.0.0.1 to only allow your own PC to access it directly (nothing over the network). And secondly, your firewall - such as in your router - should block incoming connections (this is why e.g. running a game server requires port forwarding in the router). So you're probably fine, but those are the things to double-check.

Pixels come with basically stock android, I don't know of any others that do this. Pixels are also compatible with graphene which absolutely shines as the most normie-friendly way to degoogle, though it's also still slightly less normie-friendly than just stock full-googled android so maybe not for your usecase, you be the judge.
However non-"clean" android is still generally normie-friendly, like if you buy samsung your non-tech asperger gf and your 50 year old mom can probably both use it without too much issue. The most babby friendly phone possible is still probably an iphone.
Honestly if I was buying phones for non-tech relatives, then if they were at least somewhat competent I'd get them graphene for minimal botnet, and if not then iphone for maximum normie friendliness.

A lot of legal stuff like this is very much done on a best-effort basis. If you're a reputable source and you misquote someone and get sued, that will tarnish your reputation a lot. If you're a celebrity or politician and you sue someone for misquoting, and you lose, it will cost a shitton and it could also still tarnish your reputation. So in general reputable sources will not intentionally misquote because the consequences are immense and the benefits will usually be negligible, and in general interviewees will not file maliciously because if they lose, the cost will also be immense.
Of course it doesn't always work but hey. Trump sued a bunch of media outlets and they all settled, because it's cheaper than a court battle, and I don't think misquoting was even an issue in any of the lawsuits. Trump just said "I don't like what you wrote about me" and all the newspapers said "ok here's $10million, we're not spending hundreds of millions on a court battle for years to prove what we said is not slander". So when the court systems are used maliciously by entities with too much money, the actual facts don't matter and recording or not recording is immaterial.
If you imagine an opposite situation, of a random joe being misquoted in a large newspaper and having his reputation actually damaged and trying to sue, even if he's right the newspaper might try to drown him in legal fees because they have infinite lawyer money in comparison. Or they might not bother and give him like $20k to go away. Either way the recording, or not, plays a relatively minor role - it doesn't decide who wins directly, it may at best influence the newspaper into whether they want to bother fighting.
Anyway, AFAIK it's actually common for journalists and interviewers to record interviews anyway, for editing later. And, also, voice AI has been common for like five years now.

I reiterate my stance of either graphmeme or iphone.
On graphene you can run google play as a user app (so sandboxed, without system-level permissions), and when installing apps it's very easy to deny permissions by default, including network permission. Stock android is very very generous to app devs and for example, afaik the network permission isn't exposed to the user as a toggle, you just have to click "acknowledge" when installing the app.
Iphones, as far as I'm aware, are obviously not custom rom tier but by default, stock operation and especially the way apps are granted permission is still way better than on android, at least last I looked into it. Google is an advertising company with a phone/hardware side-business; Apple is a hardware company with maybe some advertising side-business if that. I'd never use apple myself but if I was going to give my grandma a phone and wanted her to be minimally tracked, and if she was incapable of making her own choices like knowing when to click "no" on the network permission, I'd just get her an iphone.

Yeah that sounds like the thermals are kinda bad
However can you check your iGPU usage? A lot of time it's not included in CPU usage, and if you're rendering something that takes non-zero effort from the GPU it can bump up thermals a lot. On my laptop for example if I boot up some light games the CPU could be at 20-30% usage but the thermals quickly go through the roof, purely because of the iGPU.
Incidentally on my laptop this also happens when even just watching twitch in chrome, and this is a work laptop I got a couple of years ago for fast compiling, so don't underestimate the power of shit-ass modern web design.

There's generally a pail to collect water condensation that is always supposed to flow down the back, my guess is it's also where the water goes when you defrost. AFAIK it's usually located in the parts that get really warm from the compressor and heat exchanged thingamabobs or whatever which means it dries out pretty fast naturally and doesn't need emptying (if you defrosted a lot then you get effectively a shitty humidifier in your room for a little while)

Odd temp readouts but I would honestly chalk that up to just sensor position/labelling being unintuitive. If the CPU at 30% is 80*C but the iGPU is running at full tilt is only 70*C, the iGPU is probably to blame and temp is probably reporting something else.
If you want to make sure of that try running a CPU-only load, maybe using stress-ng or try compiling something on just a few cores. See if you can keep your CPU at like 30-50% load for a while and check the temps and your fan speeds, I bet it won't be as high.

You basically need to look at example photos from reviews and compare them
Specs are hard to compare directly, megapixels are one thing, the lenses are another (digital cameras will always be far superior to phone ones in the lens aspect because of the extra physical space they have to put in proper optics), and phones always have a trillion digital processing steps which can vastly affect the image - from genuine improvements like multi-shot HDR, to how they handle low light exposure, to shit like AI based sharpening which can sometimes look decent and sometimes not really

Why would source confidentiality apply here? I am not saying they have to do it whenever they refer to some source who said something. I am saying that in cases where they want to explicitly quote someone saying something directly to them they have to have it recorded.
Like when Templeton makes up quotes which he then attributes to specific people with public profile (like Daniels, or that guy who then said he wished he could say something so smart) or even when he spiced up the story from the homeless vet, whose name he still put in the paper.

>And, also, voice AI has been common for like five years now.
That's why you give a recording to the person who interviewed you right after. Regardless of what the recording might do in the court, I am thinking that any journalist would think twice before making up shit someone said if he knows that said someone has an exact recording of what you and he/she talked about. You could even have the recording device "fingerprint" the recording file somehow, so that it would always mark the recording's meta data with some serial number that marks the recording device, so it could be even verifiable that the recording came from the journalist's device.

>That's why you give a recording to the person who interviewed you right after.
I have no idea what the point is.
If recordings were some uncontrovertible evidence, then the journalist keeping a recording would be sufficient: the court subpoenas the media outlet, gets the recording, it shows the truth, case settled.
But they're not, so in both cases people will argue that the recording could be edited or faked. If there are two versions of the recordings and they mismatch, this is even worse - it's now guaranteed that one is edited, and if you can prove which one it is (through some forensic analysis of the audio) then wonderful, but if the editing was careful enough then it's back to he-said she-said. But if you could prove the recording was edited then you could do it even if there was only one recording, if your lawyers are good enough to argue for it and demand a forensic analysis.
>fingerprint
Any such fingerprint could be faked unless it's some retarded bullshit like each device having to have a TPM that can sign the recording with its private key.
Hm, maybe that could work. The subject cannot edit it without access to the journalist's recorder's TPM, then, and it will very likely be proven genuine.
Yeah, in this case I think you're right, it might genuinely work.
The answer for "why isn't this mandated" is probably some mixture of, nobody has thought of it being important enough to mandate, and also practical considerations regarding forcing every journalist to carry some botnet TPM-enabled device. What constitutes a journalist, will a local newspaper be held liable if they don't do this, will a school journal? What if you're an FSF journalist but only botnet closed devices exist that comply with the law, and you refuse to use non-free devices?
How the hell do I use bluetooth?
I have ~30 pictures on my phone that I want to have on my computer. My phone has bluetooth. My computer has bluetooth. Files can be transferred over bluetooth. In my mind it should be as simple as connecting the two bluetooth devices, telling my phone what I want to send, telling my computer where to put the files it receives, and bob's your uncle.
But noooo, My computer shows up on my phone, and I try to connect to it, but nothing happens. No "failed to connect" no error message, nothing. It just suddenly lets me try and connect to it again.
I'm actually working with 2 computers at once, and both have bluetooth enabled, and I'm having the same issues with both. One is a 2016 inspriron 7559 running win10 and the other is a ~2010 Vostro 3700 running win7. I use the vostro to remote into the inspiron because the inspiron's display is shot so if I want it to be portable I have to use another laptop and use remote desktop. The phone is a motorola 2022 5G stylus.
>TLDR: how do I transfer pictures (or anything else) from my phone to my computer with bluetooth? Or from one computer to another?

I think it might have been as simple as, almost nobody uses the feature and devs don't want to spend the time maintaining it, therefore if it was left in it'd just get buggy over time with nobody looking at it or updating it, and that could potentially cause security issues. Removing it guarantees that it will never cause a security issue.
It's the concept of "attack surface" if you've heard of it, the more features and components a piece of software has the higher the odds that something somewhere has a bug that can be exploited resulting in a security vulnerability. So, removing features that nobody uses always slightly improves security.

Basically the two attractions are it ships easier than air coolers because it takes weight off the CPU socket, and at the very high end it has better cooling performance if you have a CPU and motherboard which can actually leverage that.
Negatives are constant pump noise, shorter lifespan, and they can leak -> equipment damage.

outside of voltage, there's also amps, and as a device draws more amps, the voltage of a battery tends to drop with it (and go back up once the load is removed).
when measuring a battery with a multimetre by itself, that's the open circuit voltage, that is the voltage without any load. and old battery with little to no use may appear to have a high voltage, but will likely suffer greater voltage drop when power is drawn from it.
it would make more sense to measure the voltage while it's in the clock, though if it draws power only in short bursts, a simple multimetre may not be accurate, you'd need an oscilloscope to see what's happening

just use wifi, one easy/quick solution for one-off transfers is to use a web server, like i recently used ServeIt (f-droid) to host a folder on my phone which can be viewed and downloaded from from anything on the same wifi network and has a web browser to send a video to a friends' macbook
between my own machines i use syncthing to sync various files, and for one-off stuff i usually take the lazy route and just copy it into one of the synced folders and move it off on the computer i want it on

Bit of a noob here with a headscratcher.
I'm trying to host a webapp in a docker container and want to make said webapp accessible via my domain on a wesbserver running apache so I can access it anywhere. I have SSL configured so I want to expose the container through HTTPS. But whenever I try to do so, it's throwing an SSL error. This is where I learned about reverse proxying. I understand the concept but I don't know how to actually implement it.
I then looked into Traefik but I'm probably too dumb for all this because now I"m getting a conflicting port. Traefik is trying to listen to 80 which something apache is already listening to so I'm kind of stuck. Anyone please point me to the right direction or if this all even make sense or I just misunderstood it all.

Thanks! Yes, in apache. I have vague recollection of reading about this before I found out about Traefik. 3 questions:
1) this method means I no longer require to configure Traefik, right? I just expose the IP:port of the container directly using this?
2) I don't think my SSL cert keys are stored in that directory but they are indeed handled by letsencrypt. Do I make that directory, generate keys and add them there?
3) Assuming I did this correctly, which URL do I then access the webapp I set this up for?

By PSU do you actually mean UPS or is it just a PSU? If its just a PSU (smoller, lightweight) you can just put it in the trash bag.
If its a UPS then call your waste management service provider and ask if they will pick it up or if you have to drop it off somewhere. Usually due to risk of lead contamination from dumpster truck crushing they won't pick up things like CRT monitors, batteries or big electronics but have a drop-off location.

You expose the container ip:port *to Apache*. If the machine running Apache can reach that port then you're done.
>2) I don't think my SSL cert keys are stored in that directory but they are indeed handled by letsencrypt. Do I make that directory, generate keys and add them there?
Use whatever path is correct for you, those are just example paths but the exact location of the files doesn't matter.
>3) Assuming I did this correctly, which URL do I then access the webapp I set this up for?
In my example that would be
https://sub.doma.in/ which is ServerName+Location from the config file.
I need a gps tracker for my car, just in case. Europoor here so don't mention airtags or anything like that.
Not sure how those things work but it can work with sim card if it'll make anything easier.
I also need it to be compatible with some sort of app that can be installed on multiple devices that would send me a notification every time the car starts moving.
Any sugestions?

i've set up some gps trackers before for a friend's hiring business. just got a bunch of generic 4G trackers off ebay (originally got cheaper 2G ones, only to find those don't work as this country had just recently at the time switched off 2G service entirely). and configured them to connect to an instance of Traccar installed on a vps. traccar is free software, but you can pay them to host it for you if you don't want to manage your own server.

oh also, you can get IoT simcards which are more suited for this rather than paying for a regular phone plan. these only need to receive text messages (for configuration) and send out tiny amounts of data, and there are simcards which costs peanuts but are charged by the megabyte (useless in a phone, but much cheaper for a tracker)

more or less just need to be wired up to power. they often have an internal battery as well as a backup. the kind i'm talking about are for vehicles so also have optional wires for things like ignition detection. you can often also call them with a phone to listen into an internal microphone
just follow the instructions to send it the appropriate sms/text messages to configure it (how often to send updates, what server address/port to use, etc). i'm sure there's places that will handle everything for you if you prefer, but i already have a vps and don't mind doing it myself so i'd rather save the money.
as far as the app goes, traccar is viewed using a web browser, as it's also a web app
(picture is an example of what they look like, not specifically what i got nor a specific recommendation)

People will literally praise how convenient airdrop is and grumble that androids don't have it even though cross-platform web-based shit like this just werks; so there's clearly demand for it but somehow the solution is some kind of forbidden knowledge that nobody has access to.

The disadvantage of any arduino based solution you can come up with is that it's almost guaranteed to be more bulky than a commercial product with a bespoke integrated PCB; cats are small and the bulkier the collar the more annoying it'll be for him.

Yeah, the bulk is definitely a concern for me. I'll have to look into a GPS collar. I kind of assumed you'd have to get a regular cellular data plan like you would for a phone or something, but knowing you can do low data, low bandwidth, intermittent transmitters might be a game changer.
Also airtags advertise 30 feet but they almost if ever work at that distance. And when you do get in range I'd say theres roughly a +-50% error on distance, and direction doesnt work until you're right on top of it practically or if the target is moving.

See if there's any dumps of metacritic data. If not then you'll have to scrape yeah. I've never used it but I've heard that beautifulsoup is the go-to html library in python, and should make scraping relatively easy with some trial and error. The biggest issue though is likely going to be various anti-bot measures, some sites can be annoying as fuck if you download too many pages. Rate limiting requests can help (e.g. fetch 1-3 games per second) but if the dataset is big it's going to take forever and if the site is being pissy they might still limit or ban your IP just because you're sending so many requests, even if it's not very fast. Good luck.

>Test RAM dual kit in Memtest86.
>21 faults found.
>Test two RAM dual kits in Memtest86, all 4 slots tested.
>0 faults found.
The company that sold* the RAM dual kit to me claimed they found no issues in their tests. No evidence or anything, just a message why they rejected it. I sent them the Memtest86 reports at least. Isn't it possible that the test wouldn't report errors if they don't use the same setup I had (they could see the CPU/motherboard in the test report I sent them, etc.). Is there anything else I can do? Go to an independent 3rd party to do something?
*I say sold, because I bought it originally in 2022, it broke down by November 2024, they sent me a different copy of the exact same model, tested it in December 2024 (Memtest86, all other components the same), no faults at the time.

Usually (especially in europe) there are laws entitling you to a refund for something like 15 or 30 days, and/or if the product is completely inadequate for its intended purpose. After several months, you're unlikely to be covered by any sort of consumer protection laws.
Warranties are entirely discretionary policies from sellers. You agree to the terms of the warranty when making the purchase. If you don't like how they handle the warranty, legally what this means is you're alleging a breach of contract on their part. Assuming they claim they are not breaching anything, then the way to resolve this is through civil courts.
In some countries there are small claims courts or similar, which have a much less onerous process than a full-scaled suit. However it's still a ton of effort and time, obviously, and it's really not a very clear-cut case because you'll show your failing test results, they will show their passing test results, and then what's the judge supposed to do?
Practically speaking, the way this works in reality is that companies build up a reputation for either good or shitty warranty service. Some companies are known for having nearly worthless warranties, some are known for stellar customer service. Leave a negative review with a screenshot of your memtest and contribute to lowering the seller's reputation for others that will consider them in the future.

Short answer: OSes have incompatible APIs
Long answer: If you run your program outside the OS (given that modern OSes don't like programs doing this, for obvious security reason, that generally means running your program on boot without any OS at all), then you don't need it to be compatible, only the CPU matters
But if you run it inside an OS then it obviously needs to be compatible with the OS. OSes have APIs for doing basically anything and they are not cross-compatible
This concept extends above the OS too. For example if your program is intended to run inside a Wayland display server, then it won't be able to run inside an X server, because running inside a display server requires explicit compatibility with that server's API. The main difference between this and OS compatibility is that you can run programs outside of a display server relatively easily (i.e. all CLI programs are completely agnostic to whatever display server you're running, or if you're running one at all), but running a program outside the OS WHILE an OS is booted is not practically possible, since the OS manages all the memory and CPUs and does not allow programs to execute "besides" it, only inside its management.

Again, you are not running the code in a vacuum, you are running the code inside an OS. The OS has direct access to the machine; your binary doesn't. The OS allows your binary to run on one or more CPU cores, or can suspend it unilaterally; the OS allows your binary to write to RAM, but it could for example direct the data to a disk instead or RAM, or wipe or overwrite it without your process knowing; etc. etc. The binary does everything only through the OS. From the start, the OS is the one that loads the binary into memory and kicks off its execution on the CPU.
And different OSes have different ways of doing all of those things, and binaries need to be compatible with them else the OS won't be able to run the binary correctly.
Again, if you want to run a binary outside of an OS, you have to run it without an OS. That's possible, bare metal binaries do exist (for example, all OSes). But you can't run a binary while an OS is booted, and ignore the OS and do its own thing; the OS manages everything and binaries only do things as allowed by the OS, by communicating with the OS.

My point is the actual instruction syntax in assembly is the same across OS, so why wouldn't a windows compiled binary run on linux? Assembly doesn't know API, windows or linux. All that enters later when you actually execute it.

Because programs interface with the OS through library calls, which are just tables of memory addresses where functions begin. Change the table and program no worky. You have a similar situation with interrupt handlers on bare metal. The CPU instructions are the same, but if you want to do anything with IO you need context awareness.

Right, but the point is that to get those instructions to the CPU, the OS has to parse and load your program, and to do almost anything useful, the program has to then call functions from the OS.
The first point I actually forgot to mention and is itself very important, the format in which the binaries are encoded is different betwen OSes; there's a bunch of metadata telling the OS where the instructions are located, where static data is located, there's different conventions on the entry point and expected register states etc. It's not as simple as just a hex encoded stream of instructions that you feed directly to the CPU.
And then syscalls are needed to do anything that the program isn't permitted to do directly (due to OS security boundaries) and has to ask the OS to do, and to make the call to the OS function you need to know the correct API. Assembly very much does know APIs; they don't look like function calls, but rather they look like "which values are in which registers, what location you jump to when invoking the OS code, and then which values in which registers do you expect back when the OS jumps back to your code".

It's because the operating system (kernel) is what reads that binary via a system call and then the kernel tells the CPU what to do. A compiled binary for a particular OS such as Windows will not only have machine instructions for a particular architecture, but also information that the particular OS needs to know what to do with that binary.

With media.cache_readahead_limit and media.cache_resume_threshold - they don't work with DASH streams tho so it might not work. Other useful flags are listed in betterfox's fastfox config on github.
However, for a lot of sites that use a custom (often crappy) player, the FastStream Video Player often works pretty well:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/faststream/
You can of course use cat-catch to download the stream too

My budget is quite low, but I am not worried since I expect to buy something old and used.
I just expect it to smoothly run Gimp, Onlyoffice and Librewolf, on a Arch or Debian install.
The only reason I want to buy a laptop is because I just can't write fast enough on pen and paper.

it depends how you use it. for me i use syncthing, which isn't really cloud storage on it's own rather it's a two-way automatic syncing program just between your own devices, no third party service.
there's ups and downs for this, ups include not requiring an internet connection to work, your data never leaving your devices, etc. downsides are all data in a synced folder is stored on each device it's shared to, there's no option make it download only specific files on-demand/access (that would be a nice addition, not sure if it's planned).
if you use it with one device just to have a kind of offsite backup, then syncthing doesn't do that.
yes, you can get external/portable ssd's, they're a good idea if you want to free up space by moving off colder (infrequently-used) data

Sometimes my friends send me discord image links and it used to always be formatted like "discorcdn.com/blahblah/image.png?format=webp&quality=whatever". You could remove those parameters and actually download image.png as a PNG. Lately discord fucked this up somehow and now even going to "discordcdn.com/blah/image.png" downloads a webp, whenever I want to save it I have to tell my friends to fuck off and upload it to catbox instead or something.

People have different definitions of this. There are schizos who only buy core2duo thinkpads from 20 years ago because that was the last intel CPU without intel ME. Which is based but it's not very convenient to use for daily tasks nowadays.
Others draw the line at the pre-chiclet keyboards (which were indeed fantastic). That would be xx20 models, but xx30 models can be relatively trivially upgraded to the old style keyboard.
For used laptops, the most practical cutoff is usually the ones with non-soldered RAM, because then you can buy cheap corporate refurbs with minimal specs and shove in a new stick of RAM yourself. I think that's either the T480 or T490. Those are both pretty good laptops, you can certainly consider them, especially for light use. Not good as a workstation setup but they're new enough to be plenty powerful for office work and school. The main downside is going to be the relatively old battery by now, I'm not sure how easily swappable it is. Also I think it may be possible to put a T420 keyboard into a T480, not super easy though so up to you if you're autistic enough.
New thinkpads aren't outright bad either; I have one for work. The difference is I wrote it off as a business expense, and I got it new which means I was able to select the specs I wanted, such as a proper amount of RAM. If you're buying refurb, then soldered RAM means you're stuck with whatever the old business put in it, which usually isn't a lot unless you pay a decent premium for the rare high-specced refurb.
An apple silicon macbook air is unironically not a bad machine from what I hear, with the massive caveat that it's MacOS only (asahi is still very much not great, even from M1 ones). If you're fine with macos then unironically consider them, if not then that rules them out as an option (and a T480/90 is my recommendation in this case).

In my experience as a non windows expect it's often practically useless, but to my knowledge it's the best there is (again, to my knowledge). If you're lucky it might give you a clue such as a particular PCIe device or particular driver throwing an error right before the reboot. If not it'll just have no clues and have one error saying "system shut down unexpectedly" (plus a gazillion false positive errors from irrelevant background services that are always there for some reason)

AFAIK windows is notoriously bad for debugging shit like this. I'm not aware of anything equivalent to dmesg or the kernel log that you get on linux that will show all device errors.
Though it's also possible the OS can't even detect the issue; if it's freezing and not crashing then it may not be an issue it can even detect and handle in any way. You can consider going through the typical debugging steps - boot into memtest and run that to verify your ram, run prime95 or ycruncher to stress your CPU and see if anything crashes, try unplugging any additional devices (both external and internal, up to and including your GPU) one by one and see if you still get freezes. It's annoying and time-consuming but it might help narrow things down if there's a specific piece of hardware causing this.
>overheating
I agree that it's unlikely since any reasonable machine build in the past couple of decades should at worst throttle down and cool off, becoming slow for a little while until it's no longer overheating. A complete freeze is not impossible but just doesn't seem likely.
However you can also install a system monitor (on windows hwinfo, on linux conky) and keep an eye on your temps, as well as your ram usage, your cpu and gpu usage, maybe even your hdd usage. If at all possible put these displays somewhere usually visible, e.g. in your taskbar or on a second monitor, so that if it freezes unexpectedly you can check if the system was under any specific load.

No. Voltage tolerance is just a design consideration. You can build digital circuits that run on <1V no problem. Usually when you have a device that needs batteries to be >1.4V it's because Chang took a chip that was designed to run on lithium and put it in an alkaline enclosure without changing the power supply.

What the other anon said, but it's relatively accurate to say that analog devices just run slower/weaker with lower voltage while digital ones typically need extra circuitry for handling it.
That doesn't mean analog devices always run well with lower voltages; a cheapo analog clock for example will just start running late as voltage drops. But if you're fine with a "weaker" device, e.g. a dimmer flashlight, then it works.

I have premiere pro 2025 (a pre-cracked torrent), the latest fnord 1.5.0, and it just doesn't work, I dont understand why. Apparently there's a file that gets created in your adobe folder called "webm.prm" when you launch the executable to install, "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Common\Plug-ins\7.0\MediaCore\", but I also chose a custom folder path when I downloaded it, and I copy pasted the webm.prm file in the plugins folder there as well and it still doesnt work. not sure what to do anymore

So a bunch of phones and laptops have AI-accelerating processing now (NPUs, TPUs). How well exposed are they to userspace apps? Is it feasible to, for example, have an app that runs a simple waifu on a phone, using a small local LLM, and have it run at decent speeds and using little power by using the TPU if it's running on a modern flagship?

a dumb question, are programs like ShareIt safe ? i mean in a local network from a phone to a phone, do they download/take a screenshot of the photos/data you send from a phone to a phone ?
Option A (currently in use)
>orange pi
>external HDD (usb-powered)
>external HDD (self-powered)
>USB hub (self-powered) for peripherals and sd card readers
Option B
>some miniPC or NUC that might be able to pull one or the other external drives internal, no need for USB hub
Which of these would cost less to operate 24/7 as a NAS? The pi on its own is an obvious win, but with the other powered addons it gets a bit fuzzy.

A is still almost certainly cheaper. The HDDs will draw the same amount of power either way, so it's between the hub's power overhead vs. the NUC's power overhead, and if the hub is even halfway decent its power overhead should be near zero. If it's a server, you can also probably turn off or unplug the hub most of the time - you don't need peripherals on a server 24/7.
That said a decent minipc will have pretty low power consumption, if you get a low-powered one like one of those N150 based ones. I think convenience should play a decently large factor here. Which usually means the minipc will tend to be better, but for example if you already have the orange pi set up and it works for you then cool, no reason to change it.
There is one more aspect to the power draw, and it's that miniPCs usually have SSDs internally, almost never HDDs (except maybe really old models, if you're buying used, but old models are never optimal for power consumption). SSDs generally use less power than HDDs. You can, however, just switch to using external SSDs with your orange pi too, which should give the absolute lowest power consumption.

Stupid nig/g/a here, I have a couple of questions.
1. In a scenario of a malicious hardware-level rootkit/backdoor trough secret (CPU/GPU) opcodes/ISA instructions/logic gates what would be some ways to circumvent it if possible? Since it's "baked in" into the sillicon, could it be physically, electrically or chemically altered?
2. Building onto the last question, how can someone know which parts of a malicious, evil CPU, GPU, ISA, etc. are responsible for what? As in, for example, X, Y transistors serve Z purpose. Could "safe" (if any) parts of it be salvaged in that scenario?
3. How does WINE exactly work? How does it understand the different DLL's for software?
Thank you plenty in advance.

3) In the basic case it's a linker / loader for Windows programs which also provides some Windows library routines for Unix.
what if there was some device between your computer and the internet that just focused entirely on security
then your os could focus entirely on performance and not have to be updated every 7 hours for a security fix

I only did the stress test through a browser, but I think that's enough for something like this. I did use a real program for measuring the CPU temps and load, though.

There are, they're called firewalls, your stock router pulls double duty as one and large enterprises typically have dedicated machines for them
The problem is that a separate device can never be 100% perfect at telling what's real traffic and what's not. It would be very easy to disguise a keylogger sending out your keystrokes as legitimate web browsing traffic, and the firewall is none the wiser.

>What is the easiest way to use a laptop with two external monitors?
You plug in two monitors, assuming you have two ports for monitors.
USB-C ports may or may not have displayport capability. If your laptop has multiple check each one individually. If they do then yes it counts as a port you can plug a monitor into.
>Also, what happens if I have two displays on my laptop, some content in one display and some in the other, and I just yank the cables out? Do they just reorganize themselves on one display again, or do windows actually close?
At first, nothing happens
If configured, your OS can then reorganise the windows
If for example you're using linux without a DE, this won't even happen automatically, your windows will still be considered open on the nonexistent monitor and you'll have to move them back blindly. Most major DEs, and Windows and Mac, will normally do this automatically
Nothign ever closes because you unplugged a monitor
