For 4 it's a mix of the game design just contradicting itself over and over again. That being said, most people still straight up play 4 wrong. I'm not defending it or anything, but DMR plinking Knights from cover is quite literally just making the game harder for yourself.
For 5, the bigger issue is how useless the AI squad is despite the game trying to "balance" it by throwing more enemies at you than in any other game.
Bungie Halo very cleverly uses smaller enemy numbers in a way that makes it feel like you're fighting more than you are.

But if they're going to update MCC and overwrite the current Halo 3, then ABSOLUTELY NOT. We're just going to end up with Halo 2 Anniversary where no one plays it, yet you still need to download a massively oversized file just to be able to play the classic version. Do NOT do this. We don't need 343 infecting the best Halo. They already ruined CEA and 2A. Why would you want them to ruin 3A too? They're going to ruin the art style, ruin the sound effects, and possible ruin the soundtrack. Most first-time players are playing with classic graphics (thank goodness) but don't realize the music is anniversary edition. All the cutscenes are gonna be pre-rendered too in 4K which is going to add even more to the bloated file size.

If they do make 3A it needs to be completely standalone DLC that you don't need to install with classic 3. But you know that's not gonna happen. So no. Delete this now.

It's FUN to realize that you only have one magazine left that's only partially filled from an earlier reload, so you scramble behind cover, take bullets out of your ammo bag that you grabbed from a fallen marine and start frantically reloading them into your empty magazines so that you'll have future reloads. A Spartan could probably accomplish this incredibly quickly, too. Or imagine having to manually inject yourself with biofoam from a health pack instead of just walking up to it and you magically healing yourself. Casual and competitive shooter players prefer more individual power than Halo (particularly Halo 2 on) gives. Halo is also not doing anything fresh or interesting for multiplayer to entice new players. Infinite is also fucking ugly with no style, don't discount the importance of that for mass market.

The neat thing about trends is that they come and go, what's popular now eventually becomes boring due to being overdone and what was old can come back, with a coat of fresh paint and feel new.
For the longest time most shooters were just dull CoD clones, which we still have of course, but the last decade has seen the return of Doom and Quake style games in quite high numbers.
So there's no reason why a classic style Halo game can't come out and be popular, it just needs polish and good game design.
But we won't get that from 343, we'll get a Fortnite clone.

I don't even like sci-fi much myself, give me some aliens to shoot in interesting environments and I'll be happy. Classic era Halo and Half Life are the kind of sci-fi I like. Horror sci-fi that goes weird like Otherside Picnic is also really cool.

Yeah but done in a way that makes it stand out. The semi-retro aesthetic inspired by Alien is pretty unique, gas fired mechanical guns instead of pew pew laser guns too. Plus the contrast of Covenant and Forerunner tech, helps so much.

I agree. I'm at the point where I don't care what 343 does with Halo now. I don't even want them to go back to their old roots and expand from there, since they'll just fuck it up and excuse it that the original formula doesn't work anymore. I believe in the "be the change you wanna see" motto and will work on my own shit.

As and adult replaying the series, I've come to the conclusion that Bungie barely knew what they were doing and got super lucky with a lot of what made Halo good. I can still feel that they had a lot of love and passion for what they were doing though and a competent developer could take what they made and really shape it into something truly amazing that surpasses what they did.

Honestly, on some level I feel the same way
But Halo really did a number on me where it's something you enjoy on a brain-off level of "Holy shit this is so fun shooting aliens" and then the confidence and gravitas of the setting hooked me and now Durability is one of the most terrifying words in the English language to me thanks to the Marathon lore schizophrenia rabbit hole.

Nta but that's a fair take. You can tell they learned a lot from Halo when they went on to develop Destiny 1.... before they shat the bed on that too. Destiny 1's aesthetics and early lore concepts were so peak too, it felt like a sequel in Halo universe that happened to take place somewhere else in the universe.

I disagree on when the shatting happened. I think they shat the bed with Reach, including sprint and trying so hard to be dark and mature in a way that feels so artificial and forced.
Then they shat even harder with Destiny, making a mediocre Borderlands clone with some of the worst writing I've seen in a video game. Looks great and sound great but that's it.

I still love the OG trilogy, but to me Halo 1 has aged the best somehow, with the exception of vehicle segments where Halo 3 is still the best.

Man Halo 3 only gets better every time I play it. And I play it every year.

Bungie were notoriously terrible at evaluating their own games. They never wanted a super dominant precision start because they hated the Halo 1 pistol. So Halo 2 SMG starts fiasco. Halo 3 trying to do the AR/Pistol start thing but failing because you can't pocket your dual-wielded weapons. Missing literally all of their goals with the DMR by choosing the absolute worst possible way to implement bloom then also having absurdly awful automatics.

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm aware how much Halo Reach split the fanbase and set a bad precedent for the franchise. I just mean they had something solid with D1 but that dream was never fully realized. If you think about it. lot of its potential died before even the release of the first game, only leaving remnants behind with their aesthetics.

Simply removing ADS, sprint and increasing your movement speed to sprint levels would have made that game significantly better.
The inclusion of sprint and ADS in Halo truly made me realize what a cancer those mechanics are on the FPS genre, how boring and samey every game is that uses them and how much better they would instantly become with their removal.
