I wouldn't call it merely a "mediocre" clone, but I also played both games at the same time, and I definitely got the impression that Republic Commando took a fair bit of inspiration from Halo. At the time this was before Halo's mechanics became ubiquitous with shooters everywhere.
- Recharging shields
- Limited weapon inventory
- Dedicated grenade and melee buttons
They did hit that "30 seconds of fun" gameplay loop that the Halo 1 dev diaries talk about, so I'm not complaining. And ironically the thing it differentiated itself from Halo with, the squad commands, it did it way better and far ahead of Halo. Halo 5 tried and failed with the squad command gameplay a decade later.

How is it not good? It’s a competent FPS game. In terms of FPS gameplay for the time it released I would say it was essentially B level. Not A but not C. where it excelled was immersion taking you through a variety of starwars environments and giving you squad AI that while not perfect is still somehow better than much of the allied AI you have in modern games. There is nothing wrong with linear FPS levels. If it’s between that and open world I want the levels to be linear. obviously this topic has a sliding scale to it, but the vast majority of fps games have linear levels. Even before halo 1. And that also depends on your definition of linear. Many levels are still linear even if people say they aren’t. They just have multiple branches to end up in the same area. Or pointless puzzles and backtracking or sections to get lost in that ruin the pacing of the level. You still end up going to the same area regardless. If you don’t like the game that’s fine but people’s obsession with saying everything copied halo is just dumb and I say this as a halo fan. There are only so many ways you can design a game or a level.

Grenade launcher is just a different type of rocket or grenade items and it has that anti armor attatchment you use on the rifle. A game with grenades does not need a grenade launcher because you can already throw them.


Bolt action is just a sniper with slower shots it’s still the same thing. you don’t need 2 and while it’s fun having 2 they serve the same purpose in a videogame. look at resident evil 4. You can make do with either.

Smg is just a lower dps automatic rifle with less accuracy. it’s the same thing. Pretty sure trandos had one. Might be wrong. my argument is there are only so many weapon archetypes in videogames which is why many will always feel the same. They are all subclasses of like a handful of weapon themes. I want to make my argument clear I’m not saying that it’s bad to have more guns in games, it makes it more fun. I always am a proponent of more choice even if it is cosmetic. But my argument I was making is that inherently most games will have similar guns because there are only so many weapon roles that need to be filled. so to say one game copied another games weapons when most games have the same weapon sandbox is stupid to me. halo doesnt have any weapons in it that have not been made before. You even mentioned a bolt action sniper rifle. In halo 2 you have the human sniper with a magazine which is like a semi automatic sniper. But then you have the alien sniper, the beam rifle. For instance halo has the plasma rifle. You had brought up that you though RC had no SMG. The plasma rifle in halo is just an smg. It just simply overheats which is why it doesn’t reload. Yeah halo did make the needler which is probably the one creative gun they made (and I say this as a very large fan of the original halo games) but I suspect some other game probably already made a weapon with homing projectiles before halo. the fact that they can super combine may not have been done before though so I give them credit for that. But again not every game has to be ratchet and clank or whatever where there are all of these weird obtuse weapons. If it works thematically for one game that’s great but for many games you simply would detract from the tone you are trying to create by adding to much stuff like that into the game.

I remember deadspace 1 having that gun that shoots those saw blades out, that was pretty cool despite in practice just being a shotgun with a vertically short and horizontally large hit box. I think halo maybe could have done something cool like that with a beam or energy shotgun or something.

And they managed to fuck even that up. "Path to next waypoint" leads them to doing suicide charges into the middle of droid packs in the next room and you cannot have them take any other location but pre-assigned ones so they just tend to path forward and start shooting the moment they see enemies instead of being able to be commanded to take a better position. They are very bot-like bots so to say.
And I hate that the stupid fucking AI cannot prioritize who goes to Sniper spots. There are few things more annoying than having a tough fight and then you notice grenadier took the sniper position instead of sniper, essentially taking hin out of the fight entirely. Que "cancel order, take that position, ohh it wasnt sniper this time either, cancel order, take that positi- ohh I died, fuck. It'd be great to have AI that works with you instead of against you"

What's the best program to show FPS in all games without bloating your system?
If my 3D calculator program can go fullscreen it should be able to show the FPS.

Is it too much to ask for a Halo style Star Wars game set in Clone Wars with co-op campaign. I would play the ever living shit out of it with my friend.
