Just finished Christine's FM trilogy. Polaris was cool but too short, interestingly it's the only one of the three that lets you get an Exotic weapon (the crystal shard) but it's right at the end so not worth using (can you even level up Exotic? Skill issue desu, I played it for the first time only after EE came out and I didn't get lost at all. The only actually mazelike area is the intentionally mazelike maintenance deck, the rest are filled with landmarks, 3d objects and differing textures to ensure you recognize where you are and find where you need to go. It's much the same as UU1&2 in that regard. It's not just Wolf 3D mazes, the layout is very utilitarian and the rooms have purpose.

Is there any real difference between playing marines and navy? First time I played SS2 way back in the day I did a standard marine. Few years back I replayed the game as OSA and had a blast. tbf there are only like 9 total in the whole game and they're all in the last section. 7 of those 9 are in the very last room you physically move into. That's how it is in the original, never finished the remake because it started sucking imo.

The og's ending also makes a reference to the next game Looking Glass did after called Terra Nova which is really cool, it's like futuristic Operation Flashpoint in 1996 before it actually got made, but LGS hated it because production was dysfunctional and super painful and it nearly killed them. They sunk all their money into some admittedly crappy fmv cinematics with live actors.


Terra Nova deserves an enhanced modern port too, but it'll never happen because it never got the same treatment as System Shock. TN's source code could actually be lost and it's a shame.

I doubt none at all. System Shock feels primitive compared to TN. They still use sprites and have variable gravity, and that's about it. I'm sure TN's renderer is completely different because it supports expansive meshy outdoor environments with weather effects. You have animated 3d objects and sophisticated squad AI including teammates that operate on the field with you and take commands. You're supposed to be in a powered suit but it actually controls like a mech, which is ironic because it's usually the other way around. Tons of other things that differentiate it from System Shock.

People have tried Ai generating SHODAN's voice but it always comes out unusable because the interference and all of that confuses the AI. But now we have all of the unedited voice lines for SHODAN with the anniversary edition you can probably train one with those. Then again at that point you'd basically be listening to Terri Brosius whispering llJOI instead of SHODAN unless you went through the trouble of editing it all afterwards yourself.

I find that's the case with a lot of games. The voice acting industry has convinced itself that a particular style of delivery is "correct" and anything else is amateurish. As a result almost no modern game has characters that sound natural. They don't sound like people, they sound like voice actors.

SS3 should have SHODAN but it should be the protagonist teaming up with her in earnest (instead of just until the last moment where she betrays you) to stop the bigger bad, and her ending up getting a pardon from the UNN and TriOptimum for her help (or she does some noble sacrifice or something cliche) because while in Rebecca's body she's realized she doesn't really hate humanity as much as she thought she did. She already hasn't been a scary villain since SS1 so they may as well go full character development and make her an actual (tsundere) ally and not just a frenemy. You could even have half-human SHODAN helping you fight splintered rogue AI SHODAN or something wacky like that.
