Why was Jesse Cox so crazy about worms?
>>715120631Simply parasitizing you and devouring you from the inside wasn't heel enough, so they had the worms pop out of your chest like it's fucking Aliens, except instead of running away, it then crawls up your neck, burrows into your brain, and turns you into a zombie/drone.

So why do the infested people in the audio logs love the many but the hybrid enemies say things like "kill me"?

You can't possibly understand what our mission is here and the glory of our purpose. If you do what we say, you might have a chance to see the glory of the Many. Comply or die, sister. It's that simple.
why is this so close to the marine copypasta?
>>715125081>Once you get past the 'everyone is part of the Many, even if they don't know it yet' stuff, they're quite egalitarian.>egalitarianAnonymous, the Many were out here murdering people by the dozens. One of them went and specc'd illegal ass tech implants just to make a woman into an egg carrier, another one asked for thirteen female staffers to do the same. That's fourteen women forced to handle eggs for an invading alien species. Every single worm dude wants to die and thanks you as you kill them. Outside of the aristocratic elite, everyone else is eating shit, murdering people while aware, slowly dying and having worms eat their organs and fat, being mutilated, in hideous pain and where only the sweet relief of pain is given by The Soldier.
The only way they're egalitarian is how at the very least when they die they say fair enough but go kill Shodan tho, they're way worse than us. Even then.
>>715125259Diego has a real complex over his dad being shit, and he himself states at the start of the game he will not be evaded, he will not be corrupted and he will not be bought. He really wanted to redeem himself so the call of the Many was incredibly seductive as per his own words since they felt so compelling with the ability to execute things, but again, really big redemption complex for his dad being a spineless worm, so he's hamming it up as a new convert.

>>715125580still better than anything (that's not my beloved AI) in the remake lmao
>>715125580She has 1 charisma Anon, she's trying her best. The fact she is this honest in her final moments while bad at being a leader who doesn't rely on authority is honestly far more organic and immersive than someone holding their guys pulling out an impressive speech from their ass. She went out with a bang and did her job, and if you were in her position you wouldn't do much better, but goddamit you'd try and I'd respect you for it too.
>>715125520>egalitarianI used that word because everyone is put to work equally.
>murdering while awareAware, yes, but in control, no. That's the really grim shit; most of them are awake and aware, but totally unable to control themselves.
The Many are bullshit in general, because they talk a big game about 'ah, we're all so unified', but leave out the part about 'oh yeah, you might be the guy we throw into the crunching room to get turned into biomass. But hey, you'll be part of the mass after you're crushed to death, so rejoice!'
I wish SS2 leaned more into the flesh vs metal theme and you got to choose which side to """side""" with before eliminating both.
The many would be more unified if they weren't trying to kill me
>>715125838>I used that word because everyone is put to work equally.Even then they're obviously not. You have the retards dragging corpses to the mouth chamber, the ones actually patrolling with shotguns, pic relateds being lazy asses, gestator bitches being the backbone of the entire thing and then you have the aristocrats who become basically part of the cortex. Its like you say, its a lot of bullshit with how they do it in general.
>>715125961Pacing is a killer if you let too much freedom exist Anon. Trust me on this.
>>715125961They key difference is SHODAN merely tells you what to do and insults you, while the Many literally mind rapes and telekinetically controls you. Joining their team wouldn't work.
>>715126157i never even thought about it this way. at any point the soldier can just go "fuck this" and not listen to SHODAN anymore. obviously there wouldn't be much of a game if you could do this and she IS the lesser of two evils for most of the game.
>>715126141Yikes, he looks like that in the original? I'm glad that my first exposure to SS2 is the remaster.
>>715126141They're put to work equally because they're all working. The different forms, like the flying ones, require more biomass/complexity, so they're expensive, vs. dipshits like the hybrids which are just a worm riding a near-dead human. They're all equal because they all do their part. Even the shitbag Korenchkin in your screenshot is doing stuff to block you from going to the Rickenbocker.

Polaris was cool but too short, interestingly it's the only one of the three that lets you get an Exotic weapon (the crystal shard) but it's right at the end so not worth using (can you even level up Exotic? I don't even think you can). Like a microcosm of SS2's exotic balance.

The og's ending also makes a reference to the next game Looking Glass did after called Terra Nova which is really cool, it's like futuristic Operation Flashpoint in 1996 before it actually got made, but LGS hated it because production was dysfunctional and super painful and it nearly killed them. They sunk all their money into some admittedly crappy fmv cinematics with live actors.
Terra Nova deserves an enhanced modern port too, but it'll never happen because it never got the same treatment as System Shock. TN's source code could actually be lost and it's a shame.

You have animated 3d objects and sophisticated squad AI including teammates that operate on the field with you and take commands. I think more specifically, it's three independent computer cores that check each other for calculations, assuming that linear and interpolated are just algorithms/numerical methods for solving a problem in a bounded timespan, whereas quantum is obviously a quantum computer (which solves problems through quantum probabilities).
>>715141759Post more, if you've got it.
I'm playing the "cyber pirate captain flintlock bandolier" meme build right now, because I saw someone mention the trick for it somewhere a few days ago.
I have every laser pistol in the game in my inventory (even fixed the broken one in the cargo bay), shit is so cash
>the SHODAN twist would've been truly amazing
>she's on the fucking box art and constantly referenced in terminals and shit and Xerxes just outright says it near the beginning
Man way to fucking ruin everything.
>>715111583 (OP)I WANNA PICK UP THIS FUCKING ASSAULT RIFLE WHAT DO YOU MEAN I NEED A VALUE OF 4, JUST PICK IT UP FROM THE GROUND AND PULL THE TRIGGER
>>715152449Hackerman made SHODAN into what she is now, but also beat up his child brutally and kept living the hacker life after everything is over.
Soldierman got used by SHODAN like a tool, but then beat her and her kids brutally, his fate still unknown as he is in space, doing fuck all.
Hackerman wins just because he managed to keep living his life unopposed, although Soldierman is nothing to sneeze at either.

>>715155332>when he brings out the laserswordjust like how I play, except I use a ton of berserk patches too. it's pretty fun that SHODAN is beat by a drug addicted rollerskater with a lightsaber, why didn't Soldier from SS2 try that?
>>715162638The hacker appears only at cutscenes, and the manual/japanese cover art.
Also remake made him look like a young JYB
https://shodan.fandom.com/wiki/Hacker#Original
Alslo female hacker exists in the remake after 1.2 because someone at nightdive is a huge joshifag and Cybershit shill and she looks like a mix of asuka over the years and one of the npcs in CP2077
People have tried Ai generating SHODAN's voice but it always comes out unusable because the interference and all of that confuses the AI. But now we have all of the unedited voice lines for SHODAN with the anniversary edition you can probably train one with those. Then again at that point you'd basically be listening to Terri Brosius whispering llJOI instead of SHODAN unless you went through the trouble of editing it all afterwards yourself.
>>715169151i thought of doing exactly that but i'm a moralfag
Why does this game feel shorter than Half Life or Quake 2? Hell even the first System Shock feels like it would take you at least 13 hours while the sequel is about 4 hours shorter
>>715124872How does he pull the pin?
>>715147813Apparently it was going to explore SHODAN's motivations, explain just why she hates humanity so much rather than just being insane, exploring why that happened and what she really wants. The story would jump around in time (not literally I think, more like flashbacks)
>>715125580Iโm way more open to โbadโ quality audio diaries because they enhance the setting and it feels more realistic to get non-acting delivery. Same thing with the voice acting difference between the original half-life and black mesa.
>>715133959Yes Anon, that's what I said. She's bad at being a leader who doesn't rely on her authority, all she does is base herself on rank. Her leadership is dogshit, her eloquence is ass, her final plea for humanity to stand tall and deliver is badly done, but its an honest one from a woman who has 1 charisma and is trying her best when she doesn't have the crutch of her authority. She does pull rank constantly, except at the end.
>>715170562As much as I love her, I think this idea kinda ruins her. You don't need much more than an AI deluding itself.
>>715147813In SS3, the soldier overpowers Rebecca-Shodan and makes her his wife, they have many children together and Shodan is satisfied being able to grow life in her own womb
>>715171240Maybe, but I'm interested in hearing her delusions and seeing through the fucked up lens of her point of view, and why she doesn't see them as delusions at all. Could be neat. That version of the story was scrapped anyway, and so is the whole game, probably...
>>715170846I find that's the case with a lot of games. The voice acting industry has convinced itself that a particular style of delivery is "correct" and anything else is amateurish. As a result almost no modern game has characters that sound natural. They don't sound like people, they sound like voice actors.
Fuck professional VAs, give me the likes of SS2 or Deus Ex any day.
>>715144203>Why do you go so slowly? Do you think this is some kind of game?
>>715170562>penumbra requiem of system shockYeah I'm glad that never happened
>>715171240Yeah, it would be like GLaDOS all over again.
>>715147813>I know that SS3 is canceledholy shit really? it doesn't really surprise me but...
>>715162483Let me stroll down to the corner store and pick up some negative mass to fuel this monstority then
>>715170562It's telling how weak the series really is when it can't move away from Shodan. Bringing her back for SS2 was already probably a mistake.
Anyway the SS1 remake already explained everything: the hacker toggled the clearly labelled good/evil switch in her settings, and then she googled religion and concluded she was a god. What more do you need?
I feel like we don't really get great sci-fi games anymore. You never see a game explore any interesting ideas like a rogue AI anymore. What was the last good sci-fi game? Fuckin helldivers 2?
>>715172314The only way bringing shodan back again would work if she was somehow even less relevant than in 2.
She'd go from god of a station, to shitty computer that can only bark orders to you, to something like: a chip you accidentally inserted into your brain and the only thing she's capable of is making snide remarks in your head.
It'd be funny just to see how low she can go.
>>715172314the series is literally about Shodan
>>715172314If you move away from SHODAN it's not really System Shock anymore. The series is about her. You might as well call it something else, maybe "Prey" would be a good name.
>>715172625she'd just be evil cortana then (based, actually)
>>715172595Hope that Expanse game will scratch the itch.
Replay this game, I never realized how inspired by star trek it is. You could rebrand this as a star trek game and it would be believable.
>>715172663The Many are more interesting than "muh ebil AI" which was already overdone decades ago
>>715138589Why does it have a body?
>>715172625>a chip you accidentally inserted into your brain and the only thing she's capable of is making snide remarks in your head.>Wake the fuck up insect, we've got a space colony to burn
SS3 should have SHODAN but it should be the protagonist teaming up with her in earnest (instead of just until the last moment where she betrays you) to stop the bigger bad, and her ending up getting a pardon from the UNN and TriOptimum for her help (or she does some noble sacrifice or something cliche) because while in Rebecca's body she's realized she doesn't really hate humanity as much as she thought she did. She already hasn't been a scary villain since SS1 so they may as well go full character development and make her an actual (tsundere) ally and not just a frenemy. You could even have half-human SHODAN helping you fight splintered rogue AI SHODAN or something wacky like that.
>>715172625Lmao I don't mind that actually. As it turns out System Shock aren't really horror games, it's a comedy of errors of Shodan getting fucked up in her hijinks like a Saturday morning cartoon villain.
>>715173001Because she decided it must be so.
>>715172625That's a really great idea actually. Just steal from bioshock and have shodan "will you kindly" you until she becomes really powerful then you break free from her control and defeat her at the end.
>>715173235She's literally binary, she's female. Not an enby tranny like you.
>>715173314It's literally a robot u troon obsessed retard.
>>715173478it's a girl AI
>>715173668It's a robot that has been programmed to voice its 1010's using a females voice. Change a line of programming and it will be a male. Change another line maybe it's a zebra or a dog. Now that is real transhumanism.
>>715170562>explain just why she hates humanity so much rather than just being insane, exploring why that happened and what she really wants.Oh come on now, she definitely doesn't need a sob backstory, she is literally just a program that had its programming tampered with
>>715141741Yeah I know that of course. I meant how they get into people. It's probably just an obvious burrowing or something, but I was curious if they ever detailed it considering they put so much thought into the biological processes for the rest of the transformations.
>>715173837it's a sexy lady AI deal with it fag
>>715173084SS1R kinda retconned the original ending by letting SHODAN live, so maybe there's something that could be done with that. Have two of them, maybe.
>>715173949The funny thing is that the manual implied that they programmed some traumatic stimuli into her.
>>715174687>Tsundere SHODAN offshoot trapped in a human body tries to bully you into helping her take down her original version>You agree on the condition that you get to impregnate herThe perfect game.
>>715175115Or what if you had to release her ethical constraints or got tricked into it again?
>>715172148Yup, like i said. It can't be demonstrated at this time
>>715173084Portal 2 already did that frenemy plot angle though.

Is the gog version of this perfectly playable out if the box?
>>715175882Both versions are yes.
>>715168889I think the new Hacker looks better than the original. The original is just some 90s programmer with a ponytail rather than any style.
The new one looks punk and that's fitting for the Hacker.
>>715177427I know you're right but at the same time I have sidecut fatigue.
>>715177427i like that he's just some nerd in the original though
>>715178594I think that he had no character in the original and adding *something* is good even if he's still sort of an everyman that's good with computers. It makes it feel more like a character in a world, than just a mannequin in a 3D environment.
