I find it strange how nobody seems to notice that Nintendo doesn't outsource much of their work and instead choose to foster in-house talent, who tend to remain employees for life. They also tend to give their devs complete creative freedom. They were also one of the ones to realize that simply chasing the most cutting edge graphics isn't going to pan out for them in the long run. You can see how now that philosophy is blowing up in the face of many game dev companies because the graphical increases aren't equating in better sales but rather inflating budgets and drawing out development time. In general the problem with Odyssey people had is that the most important collectible, "Moons" were awarded in ways that didn't invoke fun but had tons of repeated challenges a la breath of the wild's "combat shrines". There's also the problem that some of the areas just didn't have a ton to do, and the challenges within the game weren't great compared to other 3D marios.

What people do unanimously praise are Mario's movement mechanics, the most refined they've ever been. But the counterpoint is the game doesn't really give you any reason to use because that platforming challenges presented are simple even for a 3D Mario game.

I think Bananza is already doing a better job of dishing out meanignful rewards for exploring the world and finding collectibles. Odyssey is better enjoyed not trying to 100% the game, but many people who traditionally "100%'d" mario games had a more meaningful experience when you're trying to get 120 stars in 64 compared to the 880 moons in Odyssey. It's very similar to how BotW pads out its exploration with korok seeds. You could say

People tend to overhype extremely minor flaws and act like it ruins the entire game. Koroks were never intended to 100%, there's a reason hestu stops giving any rewards at all less than halfway through if I remember right. They exist to be plentiful so that no matter what route you take in the game, you can always find enough to upgrade your inventory slots. There's something for getting all of them just so that there's something there. I do think moons are more of an issue, because there's legitimate content locked behind collecting all of them, but it's still really overblown.

That being said, I'm already a big fan of the skill points in bananza, there was little incentive to collect moons beyond what you needed to unlock the next kingdom in odyssey, or for completionist's sake in the postgame. In bananza, a banandium gem is always at minimum 20% of a skill point, providing what in my opinion is a perfect marriage between moons and shrine rewards.

As someone who rightfully shit on the vita for all its many issues, there was undoubtedly some proto-glownigger faggotry going on. Ps3 had been a black eye for sony, with certain western titles reviewing well late into its life. Sony santa monica practically blamed all of the ps3's failures on japan, which was a very common overall sentiment at the time as japanese devs struggled when transitioning into the hd era compared to western counterparts. Vita essentially became the japanese playstation system, while ps4 became de-facto californian long before the hq actually moved. The fact sony had such a media stranglehold back then, but the vita was considered an "acceptable" target and punching bag? Outright sabotage.
