I liked them just fine even with the low performance. With how forced exp share makes it easy to level up, the game incentivizes you to catch as many pokemon from the get-go and experiment with party members rather than being forced to commit like in gen 2. The problem is that before S/V, most pokemon games had limited variety in wild pokemon you could catch especially before you earned your 3rd or 4th badge. S/V fixed this issue and it's why I actually had a blast playing it.
