The Assassin plot is more a pacing issue. The actual writing is pretty decent for FE standards, beyond just the absurdity of...when Gharnef would create an assassin cult out of an orphanage? I didn't like how marth turned into a wimp who needed kris as a babbysitter but the story doesn't matter very much. Kris is a useful gameplay unit that fills important roles that are lacking in the base roster (high defense tank, axe unit, even fkris as a nosferatank).
The new maps are kinda gimmicky and overall not my favorites, but they are nice for the pacing since you get a few small maps mixed among the big maps.

The only thing I really hate about fe12 is that it made Malice a myrmidon instead of keeping her a merc.

Absolutely. Jagen not being there and letting Kris steal the lines take a lot of impact out of the scenario. Outside of it being one of the times Jagen losing his shit and being able to stand up to him plays into the theme of not just blindly following authority. Dude is a very honorable knight, so him getting up in Lang's face despite his advanced age is not only him throwing his weight around as a fellow senior, but also shows his absolute devotion to Marth. And when they both come together, it shows growth in both Marth as a character and the narrative structure, that it is more than just "go do what people say."

Kris doing the same not only removes a character who needs every line he can get without his playable status but lacks impact. There's a world of difference when you have this over-seasoned knight saying "Fuck you" compared to some upstart kid. Especially if said kid is supposed to be (You). Even if you know nothing of FE3's plot, (You) already knew this arrangement couldn't last. So it comes off more like saying the obvious than deciding to go your own way. It just completely deflates the tension and impact of everything.

Both games are unnecessary regressions in design from the Tellius duology, don't utilize their new content well, and have rather baffling design decisions that either homogenize some of the cooler ideas in the original games or are just bad. Yeah, carried on the shoulders of the continent's greatest warriors and royals. Not to undermine his achievements, but he still meant to be a very Classical Shonen Hero Boy than Superman. It is his optimism, do-good spirit, charisma, and determination that made him the Hero of the Ragtag, then his martial prowess. He isn't weak of course, but a big point about his character, especially in a game meant to subvert the Classical Hero Fantasy like Mystery of the Emblem, comes from how easy it is to exploit such a person. It is why Elice warns Kris to have his back, she knows things will only get tough as Hardn begins his Villain Arc. Having to fight his old friends and Continent's Greatest Warriors is going to hurt him, more than just losing his home country way back than in Game 1.

I don't think the addition of Kris made Marth look more weak than he is. It is still Marth's story at the end of the day, Kris doesn't get much of their own commentary so much as be the whipping boy for the HIDEOUS amount of exposition FE3/12 have. Plenty of other lords rely on their tacticians and seniors for the brains' part. Ike with Soren, Roy with Markus, Chrom with Robin, Corrin with Azura, Sigurd with Oifey, Seliph with Lewyn, Leif with August. The Tactician is a commonly used archetype in FE's history. It not about making the lord appear unintelligent but show the values in cooperation and their own growth. Success at such can vary (corrin is one dumb dwagon), but it isn't bad to rely on help.

Plus the FE7 trio is...pretty dumb in their own right. Hector tanks the collective IQ by a good few points but even then they aren't exactly Elibe's Brightest Minds on a good day.

Persona as a series does have some pretty big compromises for the sake of the Social Link System. This is why 3 kind of have to be empty as fuck plot-wise to have all the school day shenanigans. Since TH is supposed to have a real narrative and story, there are some things going to be lost, between the setting and plot structure. You can't really have super big growth moments like a Persona Evolution or a full character storyline without the S-Link frameworks and compromises. It is also a little goofy to go "HEY LYSITHEA LETS GO BOWLING" on most days, much less with Byleth's role and character ideas. I can agree there should be more casual hang-out ideas that aren't tied to schooling like seeing plays, invitations to go fishing, or group study dates, but what is there does all fit and tie into the themes of personal growth and motivation. Especially once War Phase begins and many characters need more things to take their minds off of suicidal idealization.

Also Persona dating isn't really that in-depth compared to Support Grinding in TH. I do want those lovey-dovey romance lines, though...

That's what I was saying. The dialogue options don't always match to what Shez was going to say, creating that dissonance in player and game. And even if it did, it wasn't particularly interesting to have Shez repeat what you selected. It just waste time as it added up. This is why Modern BioWare games moved more towards an emotional response system, to help keep some surprise while creating some connectivity, you can shape their personality through speech options while knowing what they will say. Hell, you can say this is a bit of a silent debate on the matter, look at how many Silent Protagonist mods are out for Fallout 4 or the adoration the fanbase have for CHARNAME and Tav from Baldur's Gate to understand how little gaming has truly struck a balance. I don't think there is much wrong with silent protagonists in voice acted games, even in games where they have a more set character like Mass Effect's Commander Shepard. But I do understand why the dissonance is hard to rationalize for both gamers and devs.

A game that really made me bitter towards the idea of a create-a-character needing to voice the option I selected would be Divinity: Original Sin 1. That game had you create a duo of such and shape each of their own personalities, so you get this really infuriating back and forth, especially when you have them agree with each other. Imagine the "Hi, I'm Jerry Smith!" scene, if you would excuse the leddit show reference.

You can't really get rid of that mechanic thanks to how much 3H is balanced around those systems. It is more the framing and story justifications to keep you locked in Garreg Mach, ontop of how it only has the two states between Acts 1 and 2 that made it way more lame than it should be. War Phase just really can't have too much unique content for the life sim parts just by the nature of story and mechanical progression in Fire Emblem (the series' simplicity is a double-edged sword at times), but I can agree they could have done more to make it feel way more emotional.

Garreg Mach is also just awful to navigate through. Hopes' war camp just was way better to move through, between the smaller size and less loading zones. But it did lack notable landmarks beyond the mess hall and training field. So I do hope they get better at these navigatable bases as a whole. The Somniel was honestly something of a step back despite the aesthetical improvements, especially with they removed the ability to teleport directly to units for some backwards-ass reason...

Shadow Dragon is weird. It makes changes, but not enough changes. I disagree. Marth may have been somewhat naive but despite his kind nature he didn't hesitate to draw his blade for righteous causes. This is common among protagonists as it makes him more heroic and makes it clear that he is not seeking personal glory. He was a perfect role model and after finishing the game the player felt confident that he could steer the kingdom in a good direction.
However, the additional characterization in New Mystery adds another aspect to his character that was never even hinted at previously. It paints him as a pitiable character who has delusional expectations of military matters and is in the verge of a nervous breakdown. Rather than trusting Marth to run the kingdom the player hopes that Kris can somehow keep the kingdom from crumbling despite Marth's stupidity.
