Is Castlevania 64 really as bad as people say, or are they just tasteless?

Most of the time when a game is trashed and then a wave of
>actually this game is great and almost a masterpiece!
tubeslop comes out I assume a game is a 6.5/10

It's genuinely great, but you need to think of CV64+LoD as one single experience in order to fully "get" it. The single biggest flaw is that Castle Center, the single worst level (and NOT because of the magical nitro) is obligatory in every playthrough.

it's neat. It's also rough.
Not for babs.

Would you believe it is almost a masterpiece?
Parts of it are shit, don't get me wrong. But the ideas are all there.

3D Castlevania actually kind of went backwards in terms of ambition. This one is way more interesting than any of the more polished games.

No people just lose their minds when a specific game entry takes even the slightest turn away from the main series.
In this case - castlevania being 3D made everyone shit their pants and cry.

It's not a great game, but it does some things well, the atmosphere is absolutely incredible. Especially in that first level when you're walking along and then a lightning bolt hits a tree right next to you, and it falls down in front of you. This all happens in real time.

None of the post SOTN castlevania games are even half as good as SOTN but they're not terrible games by any means.

No clue but I remember some shitty brit reviewer back in the 90s calling Sotn a piece of shit and praising this game just for being 3d , and it put me off by proxy , shit like that was the "Mario killer" of the late 90s

People basically expected a game that was better than Castlevania 4 or SoTN, while also being a slightly shonky attempt at a 3D action game from the 90's, which isn't entirely fair.
If you just take it in a vacuum, it's pretty good. It's probably not strictly worse than Tomb Raider, or Nightmare Creatures, or whatever people were playing at the time.

This is the correct answer.
All the shit this game got was because it was different. It is still a solid game, I could even say it's one of my favorites from the N64.
One of the best atmospheres in gaming

less adventurous. It kind of just takes the Doom format and builds it around melee characters instead.

nightmare creatures isn't a great game but i'd rather play it over cv64, but the real "at the time" for cv64 is like silent hill 1, rising zan, resident evil 2, ocarina of time, cv64 couldn't hold a candle 2bh
i'm going to give it another shot just for you because i remember it being terrible in every way with no redeeming qualities whatsoever

I think they're both pretty good.
Nightmare Creatures is a modest game that more or less succeeds at what it tries to do (which is be doom with third person melee characters), while Castlevania 64 is an interesting, kind of survival horror, kind of adventure game, kind of platformer thing, that doesn't quite get there, but I respect it.

Based and moonlight trench coatpilled. The game oozes atmosphere and the soundtrack still slaps two decades later. Yeah, the camera and controls fight you like theyโ€™re also vampires, but when that giant skeleton shows up on horseback in the first level? Absolute kino. Only reason people clown on it is because they wanted SoTN 2.

It's one of the earliest 3D platformers, it's pretty damn bad. Controls, camera, animations, hitboxes are all pretty much awful.

I liked the vibes though, esp that villa with a rose garden, such a mood.
