It doesn't play anything like souls stuff, it is a third person shooter based around bossfights + light randomisation of areas and item drops. Very good game. There's a large amount of ways to build your character and a lot of different ways to build individual archetypes too like melee tank, energy shield tank, healing tank, tank that uses summons to do it, etc.

Transformers FOC had a pretty awesome finale that ends with you kicking the shit out of Megatron in a proper 1v1. In the Cybertron games Megatron absolutely punts the Autobots so getting so getting to spank him in the end is pretty satisfying

Wrong there Mr. Niggs. It's the last song you play in career mode, technically (to use your own word). It's as much of a boss as the Cloud vs Sephiroth and Snake vs Liquid Ocelot fights. It's also the final and most difficult mechanical challenge in the game.

Hades, finally getting to the top and getting curbstomped by him for the first time, then going again and again and again until you beat him, and then beating him over and over again and how it changes once you learn the truth and it's just going up again to see your dad is fucking kino. Also the fact that you can put on the skulls and make him even more difficult later on.

It’s easily Isshin, best fight in the game by far, incredibly punishing, but never feels like bullshit like malenia’s waterfowl dance or the Elden dlc slop bosses
Yuyuko in t7 is my personal favorite, her last spell card is peak, remilia or kaguya are both better bosses as a whole, but yuyuko’s last spell card will always be the best

Dark Souls was such an intense experience, starting out as guy who hides behind his shield from a hollow with a broken sword to someone who Sprint R2s every boss late game.
I felt so many different emotions playing this game for the first time, mainly melancholy because I was immersed in the struggle of the chosen undead and taken by the slow pace of everything.

When I entered the Kiln of the first flame and the piano track began it perfectly mirrored what I felt in that moment.
The world had already ended and God was just a dry husk.

By the time they released Alepsis Taura most players would have massively outpaced him, even on the higher difficulties. For me even as someone not using a silly DPS build he kind of just died without doing anything, no clue what his gimmick was supposed to be. That's kind of a problem with all the DLC's, Lydusa and One True King kind of fall flat in terms of difficulty because they're only balanced as world bosses.

While I wasn't much of a fan of the rest of the game, the final boss fight against Ocelot was truly apex for the story they were trying to get across. It's perfect in that way. A game should be constantly exploring its gameplay. A boss fight only truly exists as such when there is the presence of a non-boss fight. I believe this innate duality is overplayed without thinking of the ramifications or alternatives. Do all games with them need their boss fights, and do all games with boss fights need their non-boss fights? A lot of times I propose the answer is no. You find many interesting and timeless games when this paradigm is broken. Most puzzle games have no boss fights of course, not even a real analog. Tetris remains the same engaging gameplay all the way through. Shadow of the Collosus is a game that is "all boss fights" but when there's no contrast, they aren't actually bosses anymore. What they are are actually engaging, mostly unique enemies with their own challenges, their own gameplay without padding out the gameplay with chaff that doesn't actually have you engage meaningfully with the game mechanics (well, you know, some of the bosses are pretty similar but whatever).

Plenty of FPS have unnecessary, shitty bosses., and a lot of them serve best with no such concept - merely strong enemy variety, with each enemy acting as its own set of gameplay challenges. RPGs are too broad to say one way or another but they're a genre plagued with useless ordinary fights in many, many games. Some games get the blend right, often roguelites like Slay the Spire where resource management and planning for the boss over routes with normal enemies constantly tugs on risk vs reward in a harmonious experience.

You know what I hate? Easy final boss fights.
Too bad a lot of rpgs final boss get so fucking easy if you engage with side content. Last offender for something like this was Expedition 33.

That whole sequence had the right idea, if you were not overleveled.
First you had to fight through Kefka's tower without dying, enemies one-shotting you left and right if you had wrong levels.
Then you started with the final boss lift, learning their move rotations little by little and getting further and further with one of the best soundtracks ever blaring.
And finally Kefka descended as the biblical god, sapping your whole party to 1HP as a starting move finally giving that megalixir a concrete use case.

Twilight Princess' final boss has to be one of its biggest disappointments, which is really fucking saying something.

There is no setting. No context. You just fight him in a fucking field because the game needs to end at that point. Also a bunch of skulls pop out of the ground for no reason so that you basically can't run out of health. The entire thing felt embarrassingly sloppy.

The entire game is way too easy so skulls having hearts is basically a moot point when I can carry 4 potions of full healing and most hits do 1 heart of health at most. I just like the fact that you kick his ass, then kick his ass in beast form, then kick his ass on horseback, then kick his ass in a duel. None of the other Ganondorf fights adequately show just how hard he is to kill.

Eigoing from Nine Sols is a great example of a final boss that reflects the game's themes. Specifically dao and acceptance. None of her attacks follow a set pattern, but everything has a distinct visual/audio cues. Then for the craziest sequences, the safest course is often to stop moving and let just yourself be juggled through.

At it’s core, this is a story/game about acceptance, right? That’s a big thing The best example I can give of this is Eigong’s third phase big super sky slash juggling combo. It felt like this attack came out of nowhere, and even when I was parrying, I still felt like I was always in the wrong place at the right time

But when I didn’t move at all, didn’t try to overposition myself or try too hard, it just worked. And then I tried just taking my thumb off the stick for that attack, and when I do that, parrying the attacks as they come and letting her juggle you, you end up in the perfect position to counter every single part, and it works every single time

The more I think about this, the more I can see it in the rest of the game. If you just start accepting the attacks as they come, the game will put you exactly where you need to be. Once I realized this, the fact that a few hitboxes are slightly inaccurate completely stops mattering.

the game gets harder when you try to take more control than you need to, and that’s the entire point of the game

Bosses don't suck as a concept. The contrast of low stakes, low tension, easy fights with a high stakes, high tension, difficult fight creates a memorable and enjoyable experience for the player. They also add gameplay and narrative weight to a character who is supposed to be special or powerful. It would be retarded if Sephiroth was as strong as a normal Shinra grunt.

You're not even arguing that bosses are a bad concept, just that bosses aren't a mandatory concept, which no one ever said. Pointing out individual shitty bosses doesn't really make sense either. Boss fights are a tool that can be used well or poorly, be 0% of a game or 100%. It's like saying combat sucks as a concept lol.

Bayonetta deserves a mention. Not even a huge fan of the game but that final boss was neat.
Also Bhunivelze from Lightning Returns really slapped hard.
