The story of ARR is actually fucking awesome compared to the rest of the stupid shit game. You get to know the politics, you get to learn the laws of the land, you slowly explore the universe that surrounds you. The game doesn't hold you hand at the beginning you can freely fuck around with multiple jobs before deciding on which one to commit.
You even get to choose grand companies to pledge loyalty.
So many things set up that could pay off in the future. They just don't. But that's besides the point.
The main setups and ideas are just fucking great.
And sure some quest lines drag on like fucking dravania and mor dhona and everything going towards garuda but it's sincerely, not bad at all.
Heavensward and Stormblood are amazing expansions in the sense that they expand the known world and do things for it that actually can be of use later (unlike everything after Stormblood).

This, Shadowbringers was good but only in a vacuum. It did so much damage to the setting and lore and Endwalker basically just killed off every single interesting or intriguing plot or premise. FFXIV doesn't really do either one well, since the loot is all pure stat sticks that get directly upgraded every few months, with no interesting stats on them that may actually change how your character plays. I don't even know what gear my character is wearing right now because it doesn't matter. It's loot made for people who just like to see a number on their character screen move up from 98 to 99.

People do care about Loot in MMOs, most of those people were FFXIV new audience who joined FFXIV in Covid from WoW and before that people cared in ARR and Heavensward a lot.
FFXIV trained people into not caring because the gearing system was so mundane, every 6-8months a new automatic upgrade with the release of the next raid tier.

There are two problems with your comparison:
1) Monster Hunter Wilds is NOT a live service title. FFXIV is. Whatever updates come out for the game should be in the service of it. Systems that will allow the expansion of the game in the long-term. Systems that Naoki Yoshida personally took out to cut costs.
2) MMORPGs need to be developed for long-term expansion. It's quite literally how the genre works and how it thrives. Not even Blizzard, and not even with the entire murder of the identity of Classic WoW dares to remove its RPG systems.
