The vice president of EU parliament just came out in support of SKG
Roach bros......
Ubisoft sisters, the future's looking grim...
But we said they would just ignore it...
They don't want you to own anything. They're shitting their pants on how fast SKG is now gaining support. They're trying to turn this into another gamergate and I'm afraid it's actually working.
Game journalists are making Asmongold and Pewdiepie the face of the SKG movement.
>Many developers are now urging #StopKillingGames organizers to take a firmer stance against hate groups and clarify the movement’s values. “Preservation without protection is meaningless,” said Aviv Salinas, co-creator of Blood Nova. “We need to preserve games and the people who make them.”
>As the campaign approaches legislative milestones, its ability to remain inclusive and principled will determine whether it becomes a force for good or another flashpoint in gaming’s long-running culture wars.
That article is a load of fucking sjw sludge.
They're really playing dirty now, how the fuck do we stop them?

Law is there to regulate society
I don't care about "consumer protection" or "corporate protection" and I'm not biased towards one or the other
If the behaviour is affecting 10 niggers and you expect 100% of devs to comply, it's a shitty law, doesn't matter if it's "pro consumer protection"
Just because it's "consumer protection!" doesn't make it a good law
If 5, 10 or 50k using a live service game (that's a, let's say 30-40% of all live service players) gets fucked, then yeah I would expect that 100% of devs to change behavior for a large portion of the userbase.
That's what a law is supposed to do.
NOT fuck everyone "just in case bad thing happens"

And at that point, all the normies are going to put two and two together to figure out Gamergate might actually have been an artificially overdramatized hoax as well. What they will try to do is name all game purchases something innocuous like a license and pretend like that covers them, this is why I have a fundamental disagreement with SKG, its too idealistic and doesnt even want to talk about this aspect of consumer protection law because he naively wants to save the games from being killed. >>715276147You're completely misinformed, willfully ignorant, shitposting, a shill, or just actually a dumb motherfucker.
Here's an example you might be able to understand. Photoshop is a subscription-based service. You pay a certain amount for a few months of a license to use it.
Imagine if Adobe allowed you to pay for a PERPETUAL license of Photoshop. They offered you a one-time fee of $100 and you just permanently owned Photoshop. It'd be a good deal and a lot of people would do it.
Then they suddenly, after four months, went "Okay a new version of Photoshop is coming out so we're revoking that license and you can no longer use that version of Photoshop you bought and owned." That would obviously be bullshit and completely fucked. It would transparently be a scam and a swindle and they should be taken to court over it. Because they took advantage of selling a PRODUCT but treated it like a SERVICE anyways.
The problem with games right now is that they are selling "perpetual licenses" but treating them as temporary licenses, and intentionally taking advantage of the legal grey area that exists around software. No other product is sold like this, because if they were they'd get taken to fucking court over it. They are selling something for a one-time fee with no set date or anything else that defines a service, but then taking advantage of the benefits of a service, anyways. That's why "Games as a Service" is even a term, even if it's bullshit.
This doesn't apply to subscription-based games like WoW and FFXIV because it's obvious you are paying $15 for a month of access (though there could be a legal grey area regarding the fact that you do have a one-time purchase of it, the initiative is just choosing not to fight that battle yet because it's more complicated).
You're basically arguing that you shouldn't be allowed to keep a book you bought and the publisher is in their right to come burn your copy of The Old Man and the Sea.

>>715277391No, they're arguing from the moral standpoint that it should apply to them. (And it should.) Ideally, the actual laws will apply to them, but the initiative is willing to accept that them being sold as a service is enough to cover their asses and allow for them to be sunset. It clearly sucks to anybody that's not a fucking retard because it's a failure of preservation and consumer rights.
And the real point is that it'd be trivial to keep these games alive, as well. You can run a personal server for WoW on your machine right now and people have been able to do it for decades. Every other MMO should be exactly the same and the only reason they're not is because publishers want money.

>>715279212Yes, correct, if the game nor the company benefit from you spending extra money, it’s not gambling. It’s just a game with a random element.
>>715279379Then pay the fines to the EU. China doesn’t fucking need your mystical dedicated server code, they have thousands of other applicable codes.
>>715278732First off, the initiative doesn't apply retroactively and it's much easier to make an EoS plan if you know you have to.
Second off, it isn't asking for the developers to provide literally every single tool needed to run the servers. Just enough that it is POSSIBLE to preserve the game. That's intentionally vague because it's up to the lawmakers to determine what's reasonable and what they can demand of developers (and it will often come down to a case by case basis on whether a developer fails to meet that, but it's usually pretty lenient). So it doesn't matter if those third party services go down, because the fans can just use one that's come into existence since then.
And the biggest torpedo of this argument is that if it's such a problem then how come games were ALL able to do it as a matter of course thirty years ago? Back when literally every single multiplayer game had dedicated server tools. Even MMOs provably have ways to make that possible.
>>715279241It literally is. In one case the game is running on a handheld, on the other it is running on a server rack. If either of those can't run anymore no more game for you. That's life, tough shit.
