Your line of thinking has been the line of thinking for the past 70 years in education, and it essentialy translates to, "dumb it down". Now I doubt that's really what you meant, but when you put your line of thinking into the bureaucracy of public education, throw in parents who don't want to take responsibility for helping educate their kids at home, and then also add middle manager (Principals) who don't want any responsibility either, what happens is curriculum is dumbed down.

Kids used to be educated just fine on the King James Bible (written in large part by Shakespeare by the way), the first major literacy revolution in this company happened when the Bible was the seminal text for teaching young children.

I won't say you're entirely wrong because we aren't there anymore, and I do think Shakespeare should be an elective that highschoolers can only take in Junior/Senior year, but he just invented so many words and phrases, and was just such an undeniable influence on essentially every english language author that came after him, as well as still being, arguably, simply the best in our language to ever put words to paper, it is depriving them of a lot.

Even if they didn't learn Shakespeare in school, the point is that you need to challenge children. They need to be challenged, that's the only way they grow.

My issue with "readers" is the pedestal books are put on for the mere fact that they are books. I see this a lot, mostly amongst those that scoff at video games.
Majority of "readers" just read novels, and most of those novels are young adult novels. Even "high-brow" novels aren't that much better. At the end of the day, it's just another medium to tell a story.
The real advantage of books is to be a collection of ideas and concepts. Sure a novel can provide that, but so can textbooks and other nonfiction books.

But he says that his intention is to reach people emotionally, and I don't think this style of writing is the most effective choice for that. In my opinion, the most personal kind of writing is from character's perspectives. The flowery faceless narrator gives you the impression of someone telling a story rather than putting you into the story. The detached nature makes it harder to connect emotionally. I could identify better with a character thinking about the development of the city and maybe whimsically thinking about human history as well.
