this will happen, but not in the way you want. discs will only have game installers on them and aren't playable without extra downloads.

Backwards compatibility should definitely be a part of a next generation console. The fact of the matter is consoles are competing with PC now more than ever with almost any and all retro games being playable on PC with little to no effort through emulation. Gabe's take on piracy as a service issue rather than a price issue still rings true. Honestly though, I can't really imagine Sony committing to this backwards compatibility move as they want to sell new games, not support old abandoned titles.

Well that's not too far fetched to believe as all three generations run on similar AMD architecture. The real challenge would be to provide backwards compatibility for physical PS3/PS2/PS1 discs.

Obviously to prevent someone from owning a installed copy of a game and just selling the disc. Obviously this can possibly be circumvented somehow if the PS6 requires online access to install games from disc thus being able to detect a game that is already installed on another console.

Days Gone sold over 9M copies with PC included. Probably more now. My source is from 2022.

PS Studio games usually sell well but SONY doesn't release sales data very often.
