Anon is honestly not that far from the truth, one of the reasons why I got into online vidya was because I was a shy misfit as a teen along with being at least somewhat socially stunted. If I was any mentally weaker than I was at my lowest I might have been one of those troons you see on GDQ today.

Fast forward to 12ish years ago and I just gave up completely on online vidya and vidya communities in general, what used to feel like me getting the social interactions I wanted had turned into a complete cesspool of people who were even worse social rejects than me to the point where I dreaded talking with them more than "normies".

Online interactions actually became so bad that it cured my social anxiety and made me stop spending (as much) time on vidya, the people I used to feel anxious about turned out to be much better at just being decent human beings than almost every other person I had ever met online at the time. For every 1 decent person I spent time playing GW1, Counter Strike or Diablo 2 with I found 2 decent people out in the real world that made talking feel less like a shore and more of a game.
