was it refined over the years it's been around? Yeah. But there was no good way to integrate it into the market as a split-off gaming medium. Handheld, as I see it, is the only split-off to be successful.
As you said, VR is a huge investment. Not only is it costly, but it requires the same, if not more, time and energy to enjoy it properly. It's a gaming medium for hardcore gaming hobbyists. The broader demographic of all gamers just wants to get home from school or work, boot up their platform of choice, then play and relax. VR can accommodate this, but only if you're dedicated enough.
Due to it's high cost for a headset ON TOP of a beefy enough rig to run it, it's just not worth it for the (filthy)casual gamer. It's a cool technology, but even now is very niche.
