I still remember years ago when /v/ was gawking over VR being "the future of gaming" and any rebuttal towards it costing a lung was "just don't be poor faggot" and now here we are in the year 2020+5 and VR is universally regarded as some expensive shit gimmick except by retarded hipsters who also pay the asking price for 80 dollar games.

this
the tech was too quickly developed and released
was it refined over the years it's been around? Yeah. But there was no good way to integrate it into the market as a split-off gaming medium. Handheld, as I see it, is the only split-off to be successful.
As you said, VR is a huge investment. Not only is it costly, but it requires the same, if not more, time and energy to enjoy it properly. It's a gaming medium for hardcore gaming hobbyists. The broader demographic of all gamers just wants to get home from school or work, boot up their platform of choice, then play and relax. VR can accommodate this, but only if you're dedicated enough.
Due to it's high cost for a headset ON TOP of a beefy enough rig to run it, it's just not worth it for the (filthy)casual gamer. It's a cool technology, but even now is very niche.

You have to have a dedicated space for VR unless you plan on bumping into your table, chair, walls, and door.
