Yes, that's what Undertale Yellow is. You're supposed to have played Undertale before UTY, and if you indeed have done that then you know what happens to every human that fell into the underground before Frisk. The point of UTY is to just tell a story about what kind of adventure the human before Frisk might've been through before dying, and them dying is very much part of the story for that.

I feel like none of the characters in DRY besides are Kanako are important enough to be eligible for a weird route. I think Kanako could have one, but it would have to revolve around different traits getting emphasized. I think for Kanako the best option is anger issues. Keep forcing her into making rash and violent decisions in the heat of the moment, and then having all the important people in her life tell her the opposite of what she needs to hear. Kanako kills Bearing, Cole says he deserved it. Kanako kills Toaster, Chujin tells her she did the right thing protecting her family, etc. First time is an accident, second time was done in a panic, but was arguably justified, third time was entirely avoidable, but he really did deserve it, and the final time is someone truly innocent getting killed because they got in her way.

Because obviously the game's main route is going to be the one that ties into the canon of the original game. The pacifist route is the main route of Undertale, the rpg where no one has to die, and Undertale Yellow is meant to be built off of Undertale's design, albeit with certain differences here and there.
Let's be honest, most people play UT/DR, and by extension, UTY by playing along the game's extremes, either true pacifist or true genocide. The neutral routes/endings can be interesting and have stuff worth seeing in them, but they usually don't have a whole lot going on that justifies playing the game like that. It's like playing Mass Effect 2 and 3 while doing paragade, it's just not really worth it.
With that in mind, if people are mostly going to be playing the game by strictly adhering to one path or another, it makes sense that the "canon" or "true" ending would be on one of those paths, not just in one of the various neutral routes.

It even still plays into the idea of the utter futility of it all, while giving the player a much more satisfying conclusion.

Flowey, as canon-breaking his inclusion is, is a strong factor in making sure the game can break away from canon while remaining canon, because it leaves all the events of the game up to someone else's judgement. A perfect ending where everyone lives just wouldn't sit right with Flowey, and he's proven to do this as well when you wait for Toriel at the start. He force-resets the game the second Clover actually heads back.

I think having Clover meet Asgore and having them interact for a bit probably could've cleared that all up, showing Clover (and also the player/viewer) that Asgore doesn't actually want to fight humanity again and is actually planning on just using the souls to liberate the monsters and maybe put monsterkind on even footing with the humans.

Ceroba's acting pretty suspicious from like the second time you see her, which is also the first time you get to interact with her directly. She's constantly keeping her distance, watching you from far away, like she's keeping tabs on you. Yes, that's my point that I was arguing, she's trying to take Clover's soul to make the serum, not to save Kanako, that's my point, that's what she says in-game.
My whole point is that saying that Ceroba not trying to save Kanako is a cop-out is stupid because literally her entire character and all her interactions before the plot twist are building up the idea that she's being dishonest about her true intentions, and she initially tells you that she wants to go save her daughter from the lab, so obviously you should be able to put 2 and 2 together and realize the what she told you about saving Kanako was just a cover story for her to get Clover's soul and finish the serum, not some sudden last-minute change.

I misunderstood. You're completely right and Ceroba was just trying to create a weapon to strike back at the humans with.

I thought that weapon would at least BE Kanako, like her soul would be stabilized with Clover's extract and she'd become something akin to a monster that has absorbed a human soul; but that's wrong.

Even after Ceroba is shaken from her warpath, she does not think about putting her intellect (that she clearly has having done Chujin's work up to that point) toward any better use.

I actually like Ceroba, both as a character and also from a design standpoint, and that's gotta be the most generous thing I've ever heard anyone say about her, especially on /v/.
