The atmosphere of being stuck on this oil rig - basically a small, vacated industrial town - in the middle of the ocean, surrounded by misty air, flocks of squeaking seagulls, and waves as far as the eyes can see. Games in the early 2000s really had a knack for anything near/in water. Nobody’s around other than a few soldiers patrolling the area and the machinery humming in the background. It’s very comfy. All punctuated by a melancholic, bluesy soundtrack and great sound design, even the menu noises sound cool.

Solidus did nothing wrong btw.

I couldn't tell you how many times I've replayed this entire franchise. The AI trickery is so impressive in MGS2. It's insane how badly it outclasses every modern game. You're right about the atmosphere but every MGS does this extremely well. Kojimbles' team really knows how to hook you in.

And the coolest thing, it wasn't in your face, nowadays all of this would be extremely obvious and part of some cinematic event. Back then you actually had to play the game, and get really deep into it by fucking about to discover all the insane stuff they put in it that 90% of people will never even see.

I agree that oil rigs are cool, but the one in MG2 isn't in the middle of the ocean. It's less than 20 miles from New York City.

Personally I love the atmosphere in mgs1
I'm a sucker for winter/ice levels, and the entire color palette of the game, especially coupled with the soundtrack, makes every area feel like it's freezing. This kind of thing really helps with a slower paced game like this, where you're meant to feel alone and vastly outnumbered.

2 is really great as well for the reasons you mentioned.
3 is fantastic too, though it's been a while since I played it, and I can't comment on the atmosphere too much because I played it on 3ds.
4 is a bit all over the place but I liked the atmosphere in the snatcher segment in chapter 3(?).
Peace Walker does its best with the hardware it's on, but can't really convey atmosphere super well in a lot of areas. Still love the way it looks and plays though.
Ground zeroes blew my mind when I first played it, probably because it was maybe 15min after I finished peace walker. The prison camp in the rain and darkness was so much fun to sneak through, and not having a meter for your alert level helped the gameplay feel super tense.
Sadly, mgsv drops the ball a little bit because of the open world nature of it, but I did enjoy some areas like mother base, the airport, the village with the boats, maybe a few more.

It really doesn't, most people don't even know this detail and it affects nothing. Basically, it could have been in the middle of the ocean and not a single thing would need to be changed.
>that's why it takes like 30 seconds to crash into the island at the end of the game
It takes 30 seconds to crash into the island because they cut the sequence of Arsenal arriving and crushing into Manhatten after 9/11.

Except for the atmosphere which is massive. Most the game taking place at night is comfy
Also for me I did not care at all for any of the codec calls with rosemary, downright annoying compared to mgs1 and mgs3 codec calls. Mgs1 is quite a bit easier to play super stealthy in, I felt like there were sections where getting spotted in mgs2 were nigh unavoidable, could've been a skill issue on my part though.

ACKSHULLY

It wasn't an oil rig. It was, at least ln the surface (heh) infrastructure for cleaning up an ecological disaster, an oil spill caused by the sinking of the tanker from the tanker chapter.

>Aha so it's still an oil rig, right?
Wrong. Oil rigs are designed to extract oil from oil wells under the ocean floor for commercial purposes. The Big Shell was designed to contain and clean up the oil with genetically modified sea lice that were designed to consume and break down the oil. Although it does bear some similarities structurally to an oil rig, Big Shell was a larger and more complex structure than any oil rig in existence.

Of course, the oil spill was a cover story. The tanker itself contained no oil and was instead used to transport Metal Gear Ray. The oil spill was real, but was intentionally spilled there later by the Patriots. Big Shell's true purpose was a construction site for Arsenal Gear.

So it's inaccurate to call it an oil rig, when it's actually a massive oil decontamination complex serving as a cover for Arsenal Gear's secret construction.

it's the cult following to be as insane as Kojimbo.
I still have a bunch of stupid fucking lines from the game stuck in my head.

MGS1: "revolver ocelot"
MGS2: "laugh and grow fat!"
MGS3: "What is this faerie disguise? It's going to rub off on you, and you're going to lose sight of who you really are."

And that one from MGS3 still bothers me with how little sense it seems to make.

Snake is wearing a disguise when he's caught by colonel volgin who recognizes his bulge (uwu), gives him a cock check and realizes it doesn't match up with his boyfriend's, the boss ambushes him in tandem and rips off his mask while saying that line.

Snake is a spy, why is wearing a disguise some kind of weird faux pas?

It's just shittalking Raiden through the Boss. It's not that he was wearing a disguise, it's that he was disguised as a faggot (Raikov) and she's saying it'll make him a fag too. It's also meta commentary about how Raiden was created to appeal to girls and thus compromised the series' identity. MGS3 was presented as a return to form, and the origins of the series, by having you play as Big Boss before he became Big Boss, who has the title "Naked Snake".

You should give 3 another shot in somewhat HD to experience it in a fresh light. There are some player fixes for the PC version of the recent port. It's easy to find. It still holds up very well, making the soulless unreal slop remaster entirely pointless. Judging by the price point, it only serves as an easy cash grab anyway and everything I've seen so far (visuals, the redone main theme) ain't looking great.
Also, never has there been a better send off song for any game

MGS2 as a STORY couldnt suck more asses if it could. But as a GAME, it really doesnt even compare.

In artstyle is the second best in the ps2 (mgs3 being of course the first), however, i believe no other game has nailed the VR environment aesthetic as well as the Mgs2 VR missions did. Full of details and cleanly designed, way better than the VR missions in Revengeance.

TPP had a lot of the same things going for it (endless proxy war themes) but they fumbled the pace of chapter 2 (you get send back too mother base for a story beat every other mission, it moves waaay too fast) so a lot of it went over peoples head. I only grew to appreciate it on my second playthrough.j

Im not exactly fond of stories that chew out the PLAYERS for their tastes or how they want things to go. MGS2 was just an arrogant kojima berating the player for liking the original game.

Probably you believe or feel otherwise, but i refuse to believe that wasnt one of his intentions.

I mean the guy is kind of right. Sometimes developers seem to want to just rip what you like out of the game. Usually what makes it good. I have no idea why they would want to but they have an itch for it sometimes. You cant deny that. Naughty dog did it as well with Joel albeit to a much worse degree than Kojima ever did.

Anon you replied to here. I can understand your point of view. To me, Kojima didn't mean to berate MGS1 players. That's a bit of a common misconception. It was about challenging the power fantasy idea video games in general bring to the table. He just used his own previous work as the parallel example instead of generalizing it. If it was more nefarious, he probably wouldn't have included solid snake or made him unimportant. But he's still there and kicking ass.

In no way comparable. Cuckman just wanted the white man they propped up to suffer and die. It was more about "the cuckmessage" than anything else.

Why would you challenge the power fantasy idea? Thats literally why people come to video games. Just to show you how retarded this is, Kojima replaced Snake with Raiden because he knew you wouldnt like Raiden, but at the same time wanted you to like Raiden and accept him. Its pretentious as fuck.

Raiden being the new main player vessel you mean? And yes, he's an intentional whiny little faggot (at first) in comparison to the gruff solid snake. But ultimately it was worth it for that rookie perspective and the idolization of the legend that is Solid Snake. In the end, Raiden proves himself to be as ballsy as Snake though.

>>715468817
>Challenging the status quo is bad
That's where our opinions diverge. Yes, he intentionally set up Raiden to be disliked at the start but for me he does evolve as he became more of his own man throughout the game and not just an empty vessel for the player.

Not saying the criticisms you both have aren't valid because he sure hamfisted it pretty hard right out of the gate and most certainly too hard judging from the criticisms at release. It just werks for me.

If youre making or trying to make a game that everybody likes which is what good game studios do, why would you try to challenge what they like? That anon above was absolutely correct. it was just Kojima wanting to challenge his customer base because of his ego/arrogance. If this is such a good practice, why did he literally never do it again? Every mainline MG after that involved either BB/Naked or Solid. Wanna know why? Because what happened in MGS2 isnt a smart practice in general.

>MGSV isn't stylized
Literally everything in MGS is a hyperbolic view grounded in reality. TPP is no exception. It's brighter and more contrasted than reality, the geometry is more pronounced and nuanced. Mother base shows this the best.

There was something very appealing over the pristine, simple geometrical shapes that made up the game.
It felt somewhat realistic, as if it was a real rig, but at the same time very clearly a video game world when you thought about it for a few seconds.
Similar feeling that Metroid Prime provokes.

He did it again in TPP. In a lesser extent but Venom has a lot in common with Raiden. The difference being is that he doesn't talk much at all in comparison to BB. It's a different spin on things but there are a lot of similarities between MGS2 and TPP.
I just admitted Kojimbo clearly overdid it in MGS2 but it doesn't ruin the core of the game for me since Raiden does grow out of being a little bitch. Being challenged on what you like isn't a bad thing and I'll die on this hill though.

Just to clarify im not that anon you answered to.

At the end, considering the damage is done already, all we can do as gamers is just to agree to disagree.

At least, and even if it sounds a bit sadistic from me, Kojima got his just desserts, at least for that game.
Sure, death threats SHOULD NOT BE the right way to complain to someone, but when someone is getting arrogant enough, he DOES need a nudge in the right direction to humble him... It certainly worked with John Romero.

>>715470471
Fair enough. I do not expect to change your opinion just as much as you shouldnt expect to change mine, if that is what you got from MGS2's story? More power to you, but for me tho, even with your reasoning, i just cannot accept that.
