He's a Nintendo mascot, so it makes sense. That, and they clearly used the Paon design as a base just like Smash did. Both added the proper scales and gold plate back, so the room for separation grows far narrower from that.

They're probably also overcompensating with making him shiny, but that seems to line up with the other cast in this game. It's also likely in part from the lighting in this specific area.

Yeah, this was my train of thought. The K. Rool images seemed believable, but the first two that dropped didn't seem entirely conclusive. The main leaked image specifically could have been argued to just be modified or based off the Smash model since both Bananza and Ultimate worked off the same core Paon design. There's a few more oddities too that could be explained as being related to the scene in question. The mook screenshots dropping was when a lot of people started being far more convinced, including myself.

No, more like. At least this time the gems are not required in order to beat the game. That was the major problem with DK64. You needed so many banana to access the boss and that just let you get to the next level. We can either take our time and collect a bunch to get powered up, or we can just speed through everything, beating bosses and progressing to the next area. People talk a lot of shit about how many collectibles there are and how tedious it can be to 101% (which is true IMO), but you only need about 50% of completion to reach the final boss. That's good to hear, I haven't had the chance to try the demo. Game sounds like the level design is a bit more focused than Odyssey but not dissimilar in the nature of its main collectibles. '94 is one of the best GB titles and puzzle platformers, JB is incredibly unique and fun with an almost direct line to SMG, even Returns and TF, despite lacking some of the Rare charm, are some of the best 2D platformers around. Most people complained about some Moons just being out in the open and essentially having to do very little for them. Combined with Moons being required to move from one area to the next, meant that Moon gathering both felt tedious, while also not feeling satisfying at all. If moons weren't required and moving between worlds instead was just a matter of platforming challenge and bosses, then people wouldn't have minded. Moons would have been seen as a fun distraction. That is what they are hoping for with the Banandium Gems. You can either skip them and blaze through a level, fighting the boss and getting to the end of the game and call it a day. The old tendoboomers didn't really see K Rool as an integral part of the brand like Bowser is to Mario Bros or Ganon is to Zelda. They just saw him (and most of DK's villains it seems) as monsters of the week, and DK as a character was like Rayman in the sense that he didn't actually have any solid world or cast. Every studio that had a turn with DK was encouraged to do their own thing, and most often, the creative outlet for that was the antagonists. There are a couple reasons:

Smash certainly helped a lot. People forget that Ultimate has sold like 36 million copies, throw in the tens of millions of people who have played it at a friend's house, college party, etc, and that's well over 50 million people who have played a game that features King K Rool. He's also a very "noob friendly" character in Ultimate making him rather popular in casual play, the most popular form of play.

Second, the development team are likely made up of people who grew up with the SNES DKC games and to a lesser extent DK64, so for them, K. Rool is as integral to Donkey Kong as a series as say Diddy Kong, or Cranky Kong.

Third and most importantly, Nintendo clearly wants Donkey Kong to be a big thing again. They have the themed area in Super Nintendo World, and more importantly they're going to be doing a Donkey Kong movie spun off from the Mario Movie. If you want DK to be a big thing especially in a narrative heavy format like a movie or show, you need him to have an antagonist that people like and works. King K Rool fits all the criteria they need, people know who he is, he's been the main antagonist for DK from the original DKC game up until Retro took over like 15 years later. Why try and make a new antagonist who might not work, when you have one who you know will work?

I think that's gonna change. Miyamoto was "promoted" to a higher position, but that means he's overlooking the theme parks and the movie series, which is technically a bigger job, but it means he's promoted OUT of having day-to-day contact with the gaming division. I think Miyamoto and his clique were the originals, and somewhat against experimentation.

DK Bananza looks very experimental.

Personally, I wish they had made a proper Donkey kong Country for the 'Cube, or Wii, with it being properly 3D, but we didn't get that. I can imagine running around on the rhino or something.

In each DKC game, one character holds barrels above and the other in front. It really depends on the bosses for where you'd want this barrel hurtbox. There's a few where you'd want the barrel hurtbox above.
