After the absolutely abhorrent sonic 4 games this was basically mana from heaven in comparison, if not for that it would've been judged a lot differently.

I played it for myself without looking for /v/'s opinion for it and it was pretty good, save for the abysmal bosses.

No we weren't. I and many others were upset we weren't getting mania 2 or another Sonic project. Then they barely marketed this and just assumed mania fans would buy it out of some sense of loyalty even though it came out like 8 years after mania and runs like shit on switch.

Unappealing main character design and palette, wasn't 3D sonic like the target audience hoped it would be, doesn't control as well as it should and is kind of a mishmash nonsense cartoon setting with random penguins and a goofy, non-threatening antagonist. The ingredients for a fantastic game *are* in there, but it didn't quite pan out.

Game does a shit job explaining much of the speedruning/momentum mechanics. I didn't "get it" until like World 5 and the game got more fun as you starting combining moves together to go faster.

But this leads the the other issue that the game is janky as fuck and glitches, camera fuckery and things not working is common.

Hell, it was Sonic's design and attitude (in the states) that helped him in the first game. Like, aside from Green Hill and Star Light Zone (MAYBE Spring Yard) the levels in that game arn't as well liked in Sonic 2 and 3&K.
