After the absolutely abhorrent sonic 4 games this was basically mana from heaven in comparison, if not for that it would've been judged a lot differently.

Unappealing main character design and palette, wasn't 3D sonic like the target audience hoped it would be, doesn't control as well as it should and is kind of a mishmash nonsense cartoon setting with random penguins and a goofy, non-threatening antagonist. Game does a shit job explaining much of the speedruning/momentum mechanics. I didn't "get it" until like World 5 and the game got more fun as you starting combining moves together to go faster.

But this leads the the other issue that the game is janky as fuck and glitches, camera fuckery and things not working is common.
