I tried it, but it was just a pale shadow of Persona 5 with monetization bolted on.
Every battle I fought, every Persona I recruited, I could only think "I would rather be playing Persona 5 again instead of this".
So I dropped it and started replaying Persona 5 and I'm having a lot more fun.

They're the kind of people who only care about the game as a vehicle for the story rather than the rpg mechanics, so they get antsy when there's no actual new story for years. I still love Persona and MegaTen in general. I enjoyed the ever loving shit out of Metaphor and SMT VV and will continue to look forward to the next Persona.

Persona 5 was a PS3 developed game. PS3 is a 2006 console and Persona 5 and its enhanced version Royal are still built on the backbone of PS3 era limitations in how the game was designed. That's not to insult them, but we haven't moved on past this 2006 era console. Well, ATLUS hasn't, because Metaphor was released on the 11 year old PS4.

I don't understand why they even thought a persona gacha would be a good idea. They work as singleplayer games because nobody else does this kind of JRPG / social sim mix as good as they do. But once you step in the arena of gacha games you have to compete on their terms. And I mean just look at the artstyle. Everyone is some weird stick figure, they lack distinct curves and skimpy outfits.

I felt pretty much the opposite. I'm exhausted with rehashing the same cast of characters endlessly, and I found it refreshing to start a Persona(lite) game where I had some choice in my party and some different characters to interact with. The thought of slogging through 20 hours or so just to be able to choose Yusuke or Morgana, and listening to all the lengthy exposition again, made the notion of replaying 5 too unappealing.

I felt that way initially, but the luster wore off somewhere partway through the 2nd dungeon for me. Felt like aggressively linear handholding through the main path, while side paths were a simple branch that end in a mini-boss and chest. Lots of the same interior hallway assets. It's a shame, the approach was far more impressive.

Lufel is genuinely great, Motoha is genuinely the peak of tomboys, Shun (who you can get relatively quickly, as well) is also a really solid character, and the synergies(SLs) are all at least decently enjoyable.

In retrospect, I think it was the lack of meaningful puzzles. The camera stuff I did with my brain on autopilot, but I had to stop and figure out a few in the first dungeon. One of the tile puzzles and one of the door-thumb puzzles come to mind.

yeah, that is a good point, the puzzles in the 2nd dungeon did feel a bit more like busywork where the answer isn't too hard to figure out just by looking at the area for a bit. i guess i didn't mind it but thinking about it some more i hope the 3rd dungeon is more like the 1st one in that way
