It only feels weird because AAA gamedev has slowed to a crawl, if it was still at the same pace from back then we'd be at GTA9 by now.

That game feels that old. It's as old than Half Life 2. What feels odd is Total War Warhammer is 9 years old and is still the basis of the third game. 9 years after Rome TW, we had Rome II.
