I've yet to play the classic Tomb Raider games but I am very fond of Legend series. It has that perfect mid 6th gen vibe to it and a great atmospheric score. Comfyness all-around.

I played classics but finished only half of LAU trilogy. I set hard difficulty in legend and these bike sections were a nightmare.

I've only played the classic series. Never really took a good look at the later games so I'm probably wrong with my assumption, but I always assumed they were souless reboots.

One of those games available as an early 7th gen release, but best played on previous gen. Art assets are much better on 6th gen hardware, and framerate is 60fps unlike 30 on 7th gen.

I preferred anniversary. i didn't care for the human combat and most of the levels didn't have as much as a wow effect as Anniversary's levels.
also Anniversery had actual boss fights which were fun.

Something as simple as movement in the classics was a challenge, and that's part of what made them so fun and unique. Then Legends comes out, and the controls are just as smooth and intuitive as any other 3D console action game, so instead of being like "aw yeah, I'm playing Tomb Raider", you're like, "why am I playing this when I could be playing God of War or Zelda or Devil May Cry"

Legends era gameplay looks very clumsy and the start of the Assassin's Creed style of "hold X and run forward" type of platforming. Classic games made the platforming the entire gameplay so it was more fun.

I've been playing the remaster of 1 for the first time, back when I was a kid with just a PS1 demo disc I was too confused by the controls but now I really appreciate how precise everything is (except the combat which blows ass).
I now also understand why EGM kept making derogatory comments about box puzzles in so many articles and reviews, at the time I only experienced them from games where they weren't nearly as bad but Lara's box moving animations being so slow had to have some kind of story behind them among the devs because that shit is torture.

The problem with modern Tomb Raider is that they can't accept the fact that Laura is supposed to be a bad person. Like she's a bored rich kid who travels the world to loot heritage sites, trying to make her sympathetic is missing the point. She needs to be written like a borderline sociopath who is only better than the people she's killing because she wants to use the magical McGuffin as an ornament rather than to take over the world.

Play the 1-3 remasters with the gold edition mod from nexus. Fixes the fucked up tiling on the AI made textures among other tweaks. Wait a year for aspyr finally fix the 4-6 remasters.

Recently played the 2013 Tomb Raider and was surprised how much I liked it. 2013 was still a good year for soul in your games. I loved seeing the lack of women or minorities in the credits with all the pics of the devs.

It's a really pointless attempt at making her a "good tomb raider" when she's still taking artifacts from other cultures. The writing is just bad all around. At least classic Lara stayed consistent and wasn't trying to be a colonial white savior.
