Kanji is necessary because several Japanese words have the same sound, making a hiragana spelling of them virtually identical.
Here’s a simple example.

I love clouds!

>蜘蛛はだいすき!
I love spiders!

In hiragana, both would be

Now imagine if every single sentence in the game had you second guessing what the character is actually referring to.

Plus, most of the time you’re just looking at the shape of the kanji.

Text hooks are pain in the ass to set up
OCR is fine but it still takes times and disrupts your gameplay.

You're supposed to put into it things you already know but don't want to forget and the srs optimizes your reviews so you don't waste time.
