Kanji is necessary because several Japanese words have the same sound, making a hiragana spelling of them virtually identical.
Here’s a simple example.

>雲はだいすき!
I love clouds!

>蜘蛛はだいすき!
I love spiders!

In hiragana, both would be
>くもはだいすき!

Now imagine if every single sentence in the game had you second guessing what the character is actually referring to.

Plus, most of the time you’re just looking at the shape of the kanji.

森 means forest.
What’s easier. That one character or もり?

So when you see
>これの森はすごい!
This forest is amazing!

It’s a lot faster to read than
>これのもりはすごい!

And those are baby sentences. Imagine sentences with bigger words where several kanji can be used all to reduce the character count.

>kanji is the final boss
ngmi
the real final boss are onomatopoeic and mimetic sounds and kana-only words, as you can't infer what they mean from anything
pittari, kikkari, tekkiri, kossori, garandou, pokkari, dondon, ujauja, gisshiri, bacchiri, kankan, sukatto, suratto, guzuguzu, guragura, ujiuji, mojimoji, gajigaji, peshanko, pikopiko, gangan, gyutto, tonto, kirakira, gyafun, washawasha, dokkiri, etc.
jukujikun suck too though (e.g. ainiku, kenage, karada, yagi, koma, komame, azuki, ikuji)

Dunno, doesn't seem to be that difficult (or frequent)
You can always just check words in the dictionary and see the best matches
Or use an LLM
Kanji on the other hand are really frequent and it can be really tedious to play Japanese games with the dictionary
I wish every modern game at the very least included furigana

I don't know what you're bitching about. if you don't know a word's meaning you're gonna have to use a dictionary whether you're playing kanasoup or muramasa. being able to enunciate a word or not makes no difference
if you think kanji lookups are too slow then you have texthookers and OCR tools, then you can use your favorite tool for lookups (hover dictionaries, goldendict, dicttango, etc.)

I don't get what you are bitching about either
Being able to read kana only word and guess it is meaning is way easier than being unable to even know how the word is pronounced
Plus sometimes you know the word but just don't know how it is spelled
Text hooks are pain in the ass to set up
OCR is fine but it still takes times and disrupts your gameplay.
It is fine for something like reading manga / VNs but not for playing RPGs

well, not to derail the argument, but you should be learning to write alongside learning to read. it's much better for your retention and i hope i don't have to explain why being able to write is useful. you don't have to know the stroke order to get decent handwriting input to recognize the kanji you are trying to input. just trace it if you have to. furigana are more common than disingenuous autists in this thread would have you believe but you can't depend on them, that's a crutch

The training system is super strategic, and you form deep emotional bonds with your characters as you guide them to stardom—and like, the drama? It hits. Like that one arc where Oguri Cap’s career is on the line and she’s recovering from injury, and her whole comeback hinges on that one final race in the snow at Nakayama. I swear, the way she pushes through the pain and wins—I was in tears. The pacing, the inner monologues, even the gritty rivalry with Mihono Bourbon... top-tier writing.

If you are learning - sure. If there is something that can help you with learning it would be stupid not to try it out.
But sometimes you just want to know what the character is saying and move on
Plus furigana also helps you with learning the word. If you see it a lot in the text sooner or later you'll learn how to read it even without relying on furigana.
Also I would argue that writing by itself is not that important of a skill, everyone just uses keyboards these days anyway

It’s mainly memorizing words and the kanji. I can read the kana just fine and I understand the basic sentence structure.
Ur I seem to instantly forget everything I’m taught.

I was on a student visa to get my masters in microbiology in Japan, I didn't realize I could have just gotten one to study the language. Glad I wasted all that time in undergrad

Are you consistently practicing and trying to read actual stuff? Obviously you're going to forget if you just take lessons and then not do any self study.

The hieroglyphics you're whining about literally make it possible to read the language more quickly than it is possible to read English.

I love spiders (12 letters)

>この森は凄い (6 chars)
This forest is amazing (19 letters)

The Japanese is objectively shorter when written in its optimal form.

Is there anyone fluent with kanji who played BW? Are these differences noticeable in the story dialogues? Even just in how certain concepts are expressed?

This assumes people read words one letter at a time, which they don't. Also, if you wanted a real comparison you would be comparing number of letters vs. either number of 偏旁冠脚 or number of strokes.

It changes the script to include easier/harder words based on whether you use kana or kanji mode, and occasionally the sentence structure.

I don't have time to post it here but in essence anki isn't a learning tool its a memory tool. You're supposed to put into it things you already know but don't want to forget and the srs optimizes your reviews so you don't waste time. Its supposed to be like you review a card once a month in 3 seconds or whatever but language learners use it to goon and collect decks full of cards they don't know.

Kanjifags be like using them over kana makes sentences 2% shorter this mess of a system totally works dude
Yeah yeah you can reply with some stupid ass nonsensical sentence you will never ever use that uses the same kana over and over while the kanji version would have different words
