I saw it at the cinema back in 1995 when I was 14. I know I liked it for what it was. It wasn't great. But honestly, the movie was a mix of Bruce Lee's Enter the Dragon and Big Trouble in Little China. I liked it more than the Super Mario Bros. movie from 1993. I saw that at the cinema too. Liked it more than that fucking Street Fighter movie. Double Dragon movie was complete trash. Siskel & Ebert ranked it as one of the best videogame movies of that time. Ebert still gave it a half-way thumbs down and complained that the movie was too dark. I can't say that I had that issue when I saw it. They gave the Super Mario Bros movie two thumbs down, as well as Street Fighter. Ebert was confused by the first Pokemon movie.

This is actually a smart direction for the movies:

The script pretty much writes itself from that point forward. I'm much more interested in seeing a washed up Cage get a redemption story than ninjas fighting kills that mirror the game. And this is coming from someone who grew up playing 1, seeing both OG movies in theaters, and who always hated Johnny Cage in the games. Not that any of those credentials really mean anything.

tl;dr - The casting of Urban and Cage as MC will appeal to wayyy more people and most likely make a much more enjoyable movie.

Part of why this movie was so good was how hard hitting the fights sounded. Also remember Linden Ashby talking about getting his shoulder dislocated when the actor that played Scorpion kicked him and that was the take they put in the movie.
