Why is this praised as a masterpiece? Half of the locations are unfinished and most bosses are nothing special or gimmick fights.

For me bloodborne is masterpiece, ds1 was better than 3 and 2 but it was not perfect

I prefer bloodborne combat, its more dynamic, no roll but dodge kinda like dmc and every weapon feel more unique

i dont think any souls game before or since has managed to create an experience similar to when you descend to the depths and then blighttown for the first time. you just feel unsafe and pray there is a bonfire somewhere soon. ever since ds2 there are checkpoints everywhere, and DeS had too easily farmable heals.

Maybe I am remembering it incorrectly, but I found the combat enjoyable, but not too deep. Except for the weapon moveset, of course. Its just jumping around and attacking furiously. Other than that its a masterpiece. I still believe its worth playing mostly for the aesthetic.

It's a product of its time
If you've already played all the derivatives, clones and copies DS1 and DeS spawned (including the successors made by the same company) then suddenly going back and playing them will feel like you're playing a game a 0.5x speed
The oldest games had a captivating atmosphere and ambience which greatly contributed towards it winning the Youtuber lottery but unfortunately the series ended up becoming synonymous with le epic boss fight (You died) with orchestral music wailing in the background

The world actually feeling connected is what gives everyone an erection. Unfortunately this all goes out the window once you get the lordvessel halfway through the game so....yeah. not sure why it's praised so highly.

Nta, but elden ring is (not always, but most of the time) connected in ways that don't really matter. Shortcuts in ds1 were important because you're not teleporting around the map in between zooming around on your horse.

Excellent atmosphere and level design. These combined are what make games feel magical.
Yes it does fall off, but the first half/two-thirds of the game is so good it basically earned its title as a masterpiece.

Every game fromsoft makes has different issues
>Demons souls
Unpolished mess, clunky, tons of wierd mechanics that make for an unfunexperiance, instance worlds
>Dark souls 1
4 directional rolling, way too long action queuing, later half is unfinished
>Dark souls 2
Uninteresting lore, basically instance worlds
>dark souls 3
Terribly unbalanced making any form of defense outside of rolling practically useless, mess of a story/lore
>Bloodborne
Bloodvials, game is arguably too fast, pushes for agression to the point nonagression is not viable
>Elden Ring
Open world, balanced around the idea that you'll explore the open world, next to no replayability

>Except for the weapon moveset
The weapon movesets having a few extra options doesn't make it any deeper given none of those extra moves are much different from R1 or R2 in any significant way

The only hard ones there are ceaseless and bed of chaos because they are broken. With ceaseless its hitboxes, with bed chaos its everything. Seathe is easy as fuck. You can just spam attacks and he will not get you 70% of the time.

Gaping Dragon had cool design, but altogether its an embarrassingly bad boss. The level design is nice though.

Its all All Rounder of the series in general with the best level design in its first half.
Every other game pushes in some aspects but neglects others leaving Dark Souls 1 as a baseline which no other game has been able to improve upon all aspects present at the same time.

My professional take: because people were really bored of Skyrim's combat and the PC release came out a few months later.
