Melee was made to be sharp. Maybe not as perfectly sharp as it ended up being, but it was very clearly designed with mechanical depth in mind just like Brawl was designed to knock it off at the knees. Ultimate was designed to try and bring it back a bit but lacks fundamental aspects which makes these games more fun (momentum, for one). Saying "it wasn't made for you" doesn't preclude someone else from criticizing aspects of the game. A casual player can still dislike Ultimate due to things like items being way too centralizing compared to the items in Smash 64 and Melee.

I don't hate it but I'm dreading the future of the franchise given Nintendo's fetish for remasters and hyper-iterative sequels. I could easily see them being lazy and releasing "Super Smash Ultimate Deluxe" that adds 3 characters to the base game, 100 DLC characters, and makes tiny balance tweaks. And every Nintendo fan would defend it.
The franchise needs a reset that focuses on the fundamental.

Melee was not a complete accident. Z-cancelling and L-cancelling were both intended mechanics, so there were skill-based execution checks by design. Sakurai just got scared by Melee and proceeded to spend the next two decades living in terror of the big bad tryhard who was going to rape and cannibalize his precious little casuals - a scenario which would likely never happen to the average casual player.
