no one is forcing you to do shit
"support ends", what the fuck does that mean?
no more shitty updates so they can remove paint and force you to sign up for the windows store to get it back?
im using win10 IoT, "supported" until like 2032 or someshit, but it means nothing to me, i havent updated it since i installed it
it amazes me that we live in a world where fags got so fucking imcompetent when it comes to tech, you niggers were supposed to surpass us

They are also removing all updates and ISOs for legacy OSs from their download archive, so if someone wanted to make a bootable of an old OS for compatibility with some GOG titles or something, their now going to be forced to either track down an old Windows install disc, or flash a sketchy pirated ISO file onto a bootable usb, and hope they can track down the necessary updates and redistributables.

They are doing it under the guise of โ€œSecurityโ€ its an actual fucking joke, just blatant manufactured obsolescence.

In a few years steam wont run on windows 10 they will pull support as they did with every OS before it, only windows 10 and 11 can use steam, despite some of the games they sell such as deadly premonition, manifesting data leaks on anything past windows 8.1 due to complete incompatibility at a kernal level, they will still take your money thoโ€ฆ

You can keep using Windows 10...

The only thing that stops is "security updates" which are fucking useless unless you are a total retard with no firewall.

I love that Microsoft has tricked all the normies into updating windows. My aunt replaced her perfectly fine laptop because of this.

I will NOT switch to Windows 11.
I WILL stick with Windows 10. It will not suddenly fail because support is ending.
And I do NOT care. By the time any software actually becomes depreciated for this system we'll be on Windows fucking 14.

Look into how to crack steam games using a steam EMU generator, as long as the only DRM is a steam account itself, its very easy to add an emulated steam profile to the games folder, and make a completely offline bootable of which you can archive, that way you wont lose your game library, wish i could offer more info, but i myself havenโ€™t learned how to do it yet, im just ware of it being a fairly popular thing amongst piracy forums.

i also only pay for games on GOG anything else i download a crack of for personal archive

Im aware, i was kinda bullshitting him because i didnโ€™t feel like taking the time to type a valid answer, that being said, through a few comparability tweaks, you can easily get chromium x64 working on windows 8.1 for example, it was certainly possible to allow these older OSs to support newer software through a few simple updates, they just chose not to.

It is funny how everybody is defending windows 10 now.
I remember back in the day when everybody was making the exact same arguments against Windows 10 that they are currently making against Windows 11.
And then when Windows 12 comes out you will have those same people defending Windows 11 and shitting on Windows 12.
The cycle will continue.

Windows is awful, it just kinda always will be, linux would be revolutionary, but no way the average user is going to learn how to run things through wine.

compatibility is the only barrier to linux.

And its not even a barrier of technicality, almost any windows program works fine on linux, its just the average windows user is technologically illiterate.

The funniest shit about this will be how much it will fuck up FOSS. A all the jeets that game will be switching to Linux, and because they all want to fraud their way into dev positions they will submit so many fucking commits that will be complete bullshit AI prompts that it will cause the entire FOSS scene to fall apart as it tries to sift threw the tidal wave of shit to look for anything that isn't complete garbage.

Watching /g/ seethe even more is going to be so fucking funny. They deserve it, nothing but trannies and chomos over there.

Windows was only good when it maintained support for 2-3 earlier versions.
Every new Windows they shit out is basically pre-alpha and only becomes halfway usable 5-10 years after release, except now they're ending 10 support while it's still in beta.
Current 11 devs are just as bad GNOME devs.
>Usecase for moving your taskbar?
>>715769252
Yeah, you just can't trust proprietary software to maintain support for anything anymore.
>>715771878
>compatibility is the only barrier to linux.
Most people aren't using professional CAD software or whatever. The barrier to Linux is that people have built up massive misconceptions and bad habits, while also being unwilling to put up with Linux due to a lack of the same media presence on TV or advertisements that coerced them into putting up with Windows and Mac.

you have to keep in mind that every linux user was a windows user. we know what we're talking about, we've used windows, and we can actually compare the two.
there's plenty of things to dislike about linux, like software availability, but installing software on linux is exactly like on android, you open your store, press install, the end.

>bill gates did everything he could to make sure every pc came loaded with windows
That's not an answer. Every pc comes with internet explorer, nobody use it.
>because YOU are the product
Yeah because the system is easy to use and doesn't waste the user time. This is how reality works, people do not have the time in their life to crack down every driver update or getting an IT course to install a wifi.
The moment amazon became convenient for people, people use it even for groceries.
The moment credit cards became covenient for people, people use it even for change.
This is how reality works.
If linuxfags wants people to use it they need to create a one click system proof error. But it's not the case, because you cultist wants to keel le epic safe system for yourself. Because linuxfags are shitty elitist, and when people see elitism they tell them to fuck off.
It's not the "normalfags" fault, because you can see how normal people act when change is near.
90% of people just want to sit, install a game and play with their vidya card of choice.
Can you do it at least on a % comparable to windows? If yes linux would be used by EVERYONE.
But since the % is extremely lower, because it is, linux will be always shunned.
I sincerely hope steamos will be exactly the one click system i was talking about, in THAT case it will probably top windows in the userbase.
It's a sociological problem, not a computer problem.

the biggest selling point of windows has always been UI and compatibility with software. always.

so when a new version comes along with a UI that is objectively terrible, it is, by definition, a terrible windows OS. whatever retard thought that 'rename' a file was too complicated for users, so it had to be hidden away in a secret 'advanced' mode right click menu, was either malicious or ignorant.

i hope an entire new generation of pc users become gimped by the balls cutting of windows 11, so all the indian pajeet scammers in the world can convince them to hand over their wallets because they can do magic things like rename files.

create a bootable usb drive, plug it in, reboot your pc, press next during the install, and that's pretty much all you need to know to get started
now if you want to actually tinker with your install there's a lot to know, but that's the kind of stuff you learn over time and that you absolutely do not need to get started.

windows ending my market share in October
it was bound to happen anyway
10 was already a bridge too far, and I was on the move to 11
They should have cut their losses while they were ahead and scaled back on the telemetry/Copilot
Even if they lost on data harvesting, zoomers are such sheep they would have been claiming MS the goodguys and happily shilled Win 11 for free.
Real talk. Imagine if Win 11 was marketed on LESS telemetry and spying?
Not no
Just less
But it's more. And way worse.
Fuck 'em. Been on linux for half a year and have not regretted it in the slightest.
Win7 was the great OS of all time, and they will never recover.

I do have a Windows 11 VM set up for certain things that lack support like my car's ECU tuner but even installing that VM was an excercise in pure frustration.

Then to get the awful taste out of my mouth I installed Mint on my laptop.

One of the fun experiences I've had switching to Linux is searching for programs/software and finding all this interesting stuff with cool features and interesting layouts where if you try to find the same things for Windows you have to wade through endless half-baked poorly programmed shit that comes loaded with ad/spyware.

The worst I come across on Linux is some shit designed for gnome. They're always the ugliest, unintuitive feature-incomplete pieces of jank.

Yup, 99% of the time there's a flatpak or appimage out there that does what you want and more without even needing a system package install.
Flatpak is a little autistic about permissions but those issues are easily solved and for me evokes the feeling of older Windows versions when PCs and gaming required some computer literacy.
I was surprised that games are packaged there too, I installed Beyond All Reason and SRB2 Kart to play with friends when I fully expected having to run them through Proton.
I'm ok with gnome stuff now that it's on libadwaita, but older stuff built from gtk/gnome is definitely janky as fuck. Linux UI design and compatibility seems to have improved by leaps and bounds recently.
I don't really have a normie perspective on Linux adoption enough to recommend to everybody though because I am a developer by trade so it comes a little easier to me.

I would love to switch to linux but it's just fucking horrid
Its slower, it has bugs the community just brushes off and never bothered fixing, you have to update more often than with W$, a lot of W$ programs just wont work or aren't available for piracy because there is muh free alternative and the linux culture, the sudo bullshit gives no feedback if changes were done and if you're looking for solutions good luck, forums have +15 yo abandoned questions that no one ever gave a solution to, if you're not spending every afternoon debbuging the shit out of the OS you're not a good linux user

And even worse, it has no future, no one will fix the OS and the UI because it can't be user friendly like M$ that is for normalfags!
Year of linux never, unironically its easier to mod W$ to remove the shit than to use linux

If you are brand new to linux what is wrong with immutable?
People need the guard rails to not "delete system 32 to make your system faster" in the begining.
Once you get the hang of how things work you can distro-hop and run only Khali or Arch with the tools you need or code the WINE compatibility yourself.
One step at a time man. Switching from the only OS most people have ever known is a big leap.
A lot of people just wanna play games and surf the next with the occasional software.

Personally I think Steam needs to do the following.
>Create a non-profit for their OS which will forever remain free and open source
>Open up funding/donation streams
>Expand Proton to fully translate EVERY windows program
>Allow other Distros to be affiliates and recieve funding for updates that the Steam OS NonProfit requests, similar to a bounty program for bugs.
A system like this allows steam to beat monopoly accusations, never end up under Microsofts thumb again, and make Linux a profitable dev community that isn't swayed by money for every decision.
On top of this European countries are switching to Linux for gov systems and you could easily lobby the EU for voluntary funding

You can safely and easily use previous versions of Windows for years and years after EOL. At work we've got a machine using 32-bit XP, and in 2020 we finally retired a machine using 3.1. It's sitting in storage next to a 486DX which I remember working in the 2010's. There are loads of WAN-connected W2000 machines still doing work because that was the Windows release that has a fully compliant net stack. There's posts ITT of guys still gaming on W7 and Vista.

They're doing this because of the legal requirements of TPM in most large nations. The TPM contains government backdoors that allows them to read out passphrases or keys you have used in order to decrypt your system. You legally cannot sell a system after 2026 without it.

This just isn't true. If your software works on 7/8 or whatever, it will work on it until the sun collapses. All you have to do is not update it. Which is easy because updates never have anything worthwhile anyway. "This update prevents a niche exploit that can only work if the attacker is sitting at your desk and knows your password" yeah okay, that's not worth it. "This update adds Discord and Instragram Reels support", no you can keep that too.

Imagine thinking you need microsoft's permission aka """support""" to use your computer.

I used win7 for like 12 years with updates disabled the entire time and never had a single issue.

I use both windows 11 and 10, and I used to use 7/XP. 10/11 is virtually the same. If you told me 11 stands for 2011 instead of 2011 I would have believe you.

Why does microsoft need windows to upgrade? IIRC, windows 10 would be the final windows because they will incrementally upgrade its features overtime. To do away with the version numbers. I guess plans change.

That's what I'm going to do. I'll use W10 until W12 is released. If it's the same as W11, I'll switch to Linux. SteamOS will probably be available by then, and it won't have many bugs.
However, I don't think W12 will be any good since MS is full of jeets and is now using AI to "code".

deprecating old stuff and introducing new stuff is something every piece of software does. you just have to get rid of the old cruft, because some stuff didn't work, because taste changes, because people want new shit.
the easiest way to introducing breaking changes is through proper versioning. linux does the same thing btw.
