Is it worth getting into these "Hoyoverse" games? And if so which one? I'm assuming too much of the story in "Genshin Impact" and "Honkai Impact" have passed? It's episodic in some form and you can't view past stories?

I've always hated the concept of a live service game but I'm willing to try something outside of my comfort zone.

I've played Genshin, HSR and ZZZ
The only one I stuck with is Genshin for being more of a game than the other two.
You could tell these guys had ambition back then, to make a such a game for a format that was still very much mobile only at that point in time.
HSR and ZZZ are just low budget spinoffs in comparison, they've got none of the ambition that made hoyo one of the most profitable game companies in the world.

I played ZZZ at launch and you could tell it had devs that actually cared to deliver something unique with a lower scope/budget, but mihoyo breathed down their necks when the launch got bad feedback and their revenue declined and they ruined the game chasing more money.

ZZZ is the most palatable in terms of wanting to just breeze through the story and imo has the most effort put into npc and environment models. If any of these games were to say, get killed, ZZZ is easily the one game that would translate better as a stand alone console game.
I still play HSR mostly because I feel it has the most hype story payoffs and has great music but my good it's also the absolute worst when it comes to word babble even compared to genshin. It also has a really bad case of asset reuse that feels really cheap at times.

ZZZ's problem is the same thing that's prevalent in the normal vidya industry. Normies don't particularly love high speed action games. The ZZZ team is putting in band aids on other parts of the game while not thinking that the core combat is the reason why it's not as popular. Think about it, what other action gacha were popular? Compared to Genshin, ZZZ definitely is in the high speed parry/dodge league of action games. Genshin has a ton of really good support and defensive teams that allow you to breeze obstacles, but ZZZ requires you to have working reflexes especially since it doesn't have healers to compensate for sloppy play. If you think Genshin players are mouth breathers then they will be hard filtered by ZZZ because like I said, ZZZ doesn't have healers. Meanwhile everyone in Genshin has at least Zhongli or Kokomi by this point where they can be practically immortal and just focus on their 3 character rotations. You don't have that luxury in ZZZ. Hi OP, I'm you from about 2 weeks into the future. I've been playing both for about that time (as side games, on and off), ZZZ and HSR. I don't care about the girls (gayfag) but the games seemed polished and fun and I don't mind spending like $20 a month max (I still haven't spent a penny on either). They're different games. One is twitchy, the other is a JRPG. I like the characters from ZZZ more (the furries are great), but HSR feels like it promises a more complete game, and flashier attacks/animations. ZZZ is VERY forced animation. Feels more casual, geared towards a younger audience, HSR is a little more cerebral. I may stick with HSR despite spending more time on ZZZ in the end

I recently played Genshin for the first time out of boredom.
It has a certain comfy amount of polish but the way the "story" is presented and written is probably THE blandest jrpg pap I've ever seen in my life. It's so painfully generic it hurts. You do some quests and you have waves of totally disposable color-coded characters prattle forever about nothing, just to essentially pad out the "go there, do that" gameplay loop.
I cannot overstate how bland it is.

Semi-related to that I also started Blue Archive, also out of boredom and it suffers from the same issue. Constantly listen to characters prattle on about nothing as if someone who wrote their dialogue got paid by the word but there is nothing to convey.

Both of these examples convey the fundamental flaw with these gacha games, in order to capture the widest audience (mostly ESL broke thirdies) they have to me as inoffensive and as "clear" as possible so it's just derivative boring padding.

I'm playing through Atelier Sophie 2 currently, and game gives you buttons to skip (main difference with genshin), auto mode, and even speed through text.
The protagonists in this are also one of the highlight, while Genshin forces every conversation to have a literal blank slate and the most insufferable creature known in existence.
Another issue is the pacing. Slice of life with a linear story is the highlight in Atelier, the reason you're playing it for. It's enjoyable 100% of the time.
Meanwhile Genshin, by virtue of having a big plot (that for some reason has you going through multiple regions instead of just speedrunning to Snezhnaya to stop the Fatui), forces you to finish your unrelated quests to go on with the archon quest and even then the pacing gets constantly broken with unrelated things like cooking pizza with Ayaka. Jesus Christ.

It's worth playing Genshin alone and solely for the sake of open-world adventures.
Otherwise, all similar games are structured the same way, and just want to tie you to themselves with a daily cycle of endless routine, farming and fomo, where without a monthly subscription you can't afford anything, and you will forever catch up with the growing requirements for completing "content" in the form of arenas with a timer.
