You almost always can heal stupid and in almost all cases it's the best idea to do so. Healers who let people die to try "teach them a lesson" are the dumbest fucks any party can get. Luckily you'll almost never run into a healer like that, since most people want to actually push their heal buttons instead of LARPing as a DPS mage.
The worst offenders of this are probably the XIV healers who get this mindset of "You only need your last HP so I'll heal the absolute bare minimum possible", which sounds great in theory and in practice means that both the healer and the DPS have to ensure they never make any mistakes, or the party loses an enormous amount of DPS and very likely wipes to the enrage, in a game with some of the most generous healing power imaginable.
A healer who doing that shit saves himself 1GCD (or less, depending) and sets the entire group on a knife's edge of "Play without any guard rails or we all wipe", all that for 1 fucking glare. It's insipid and it annoys me, but that's how a lot of people like to play, so I let them do it. When I co-heal, I just pop that heal myself. They can beat me in the logs, I'll just be happy to get the boss dead.
