Anyone else likes watching blacks playing horror games? They get freaked out so easily lol.
I'm racist btw
I got actually scared playing painscreek killings. I really got conditioned so the last part of the game freaked me out

I was playing Silent Hill 2 at 3 in the morning in the living room and all of a sudden there was loud scratching at the door. It was a dumb stray cat that almost gave me a heart attack
>>715900901Would like a game there. Silent hill f us.

And no, jumpscares aren't scary. Humans are conditioned to jump if not expecting it with loud noises, not the sense as a sense of dread that persists.

>>715896084 (OP)I was playing stronghold 2, it was really late and I was kinda drunk(as I always was at the time)

Basic as fuck, but Alien Isolation got me good. I could only play it in 30 minute increments and would sit on the main menu psyching myself up to keep playing.
While I didn't play the game but watching some japanese guy trigger a easter egg in rpg maker horror game that showed a dead body was pretty creepy.
This shit terrified me as a kid.
>>715901960I don't really see anything creepy about it. It's just a Jap dude with a thousand-yard stare but in black and white. There are far more entertaining mugshots out there.

>>715896084 (OP)PT radio speaking to you made me sad :(
The ending of this game got me good, hands off the keyboard and mouse kind of jump, and this was after several attempts strewn throughout that didn't faze me.
VR is also getting better at horror, but after playing spooky stuff in VRChat (which are all over the place in terms of quality) you can really tell just how limited games were at first.
The first time something actually broke into my base in darkwood I shit myself.
Then after I found the power of the shovel every entity in that game stopped spooking me
I was playing Silent Hill Homecoming (it's not as bad as people say but it's not that great either)
>2011 and playing in the dark
>Playing that boss fight with the giant tall doll looking bitch (The best monster design in the game)
>Playing in my living room on one of those office/table chairs that kinda has your ass uncovered/sticking out when you sit down
>Part of the boss fight where the giant doll bitch goes into the rafters above offscreen and then jumps down after a few seconds to attack you
>Waiting for her to jump down and tensed up because my health is low because I didn't understand the concept of blocking in that game
>My fucking cat for no reason decides now is a good time to quickly stick both paws on my ass and scratch me
>Scream and quickly get up to see what the fuck just did that
>Cat runs away in fear
My cat is still alive today she's just really fucking old/tired now but I still chuckle about it from time to time
Probably this. I was so scared that I turn the game off and walk away
>>715904868>My cat is still alive today she's just really fucking old/tired nowGo give that old girl a kiss on the head, she sounds like she was a real jokester in her prime.

Nowhere near the spookiest, but Forgive Me Father gave me the creeps recently with that Space level.
Space is fucking scary man, i don't think i could play shit like Outer Worlds and such.
>>715906150>I don't see shit nigga. That's what's scary, the unknown is the scariest thing in the universe.
>>715906243>Space is fucking scary manSpace is one of the most terrifying things ever. You're either completely alone in a place that's bigger than your mind can truly comprehend, or you're not, and I don't know which is scarier.

>>715906723I'm not afraid of anything that wears shoes.
I fucking hate proper scary games.
Survival horror is fine cause i can fight back but amnesia the dark descent and SOMA both actually made me scream
Fatal frame 3 as well, but i dropped that game cause its actually fucking boring.
But horror just has this primal appeal to it, the rush of being terrified of something really taps into something.
So i just read about scary shit instead of playing games cause sound isnt involved and i can play some music to calm down.
>>715906723>When ya wake up at night and got to shit real bad

>>715910518I didn't like Ao Oni, but they did a ton of good stuff there with UI related horror like them hiding behind text boxes or the party menu. Just because I assume Undertale did something lame doesn't mean the concept is bad, that's childish.

I was in a spooky building (wasn't night time and no, it was not the lion). I'm walking and suddenly I feel something weird. I look up and there's this huge cobweb hanging from the ceiling.

i find the rdr manimal's to be one of the creepiest things i stumbled upon in a game. its insane that one has played around a similar concept in a horror game.
>>715913406You know, in the original novel Roadside Picnic the Zone has some semi-invisible cobweb-like anomalies which make the people that touch them die some time later from a massive heart attack.
I just thought that was interesting.

the second best time to uninstall the game
the startup face changing in Soma, especially after the ending
Single biggest scare when I was playing Thief.
I knew nothing about the game, hadn't read any previews or anything, but I really liked the first level.
Then the second level has you sneak through a mine. And I suddenly hear moaning from somewhere. Then this zombie is suddenly standing next to me and hitting me. I panic but manage to defeat it.
At this point I've no idea what I killed so I lean over the body to get a better look in the darkness. Then it fucking jumps back up and attacks me.
I pushed away with my arms so my mouse went over the edge of the desk and down to the floor. Fucking zombies.
I've played a lot of spooky games but none of them come even within a light year of the sheer terror that this scene made me feel, and I never found grey particularly scary or anything. Everything about it, from the mysterious global nature of the invasion, the way the alien is presented not in a hostile, but unknown manner, the look of horror on Joaquin's face. It was just a gut punch of extreme fear of the sort I know I'll never feel again in any form of media.
Do you guys know what I'm talking about with this?
>>715896084 (OP)Wandering into an abandoned sewer in Call of Pripyat that has a bunch of corners for mutated rodents to jump out at you. I was high as balls and got lost and just sort of wandered into it by accident and kept getting ambushed by rodents jumping out of little vents

7 Days to die is pretty scary on your first night.
>Try out game for the first time knew it had zombies and survivals also a voxel based system like minecraft
>My friends tell me to avoid taking damage at all costs because any damage could result in a crit injury if youre unlucky
>Ez pz all the zombies are slow walkers
>Nightfall.wav
>Every zombie is now sprinting and roaming the streets
>get attacked multiple times before spriting into a house i looted before
>i heal my wounds it will take 10 real life mins to heal a sprained leg so i just wait in the attic
>day/night time take 30 mins each
>place a single torch down to give me some light in the empty shit stack and crouch to stay quiet hoping the sprinters outside dont notice me
>whole time game is playing creepy ass audio sounds and music
https://youtu.be/vyGoQHTdQI0?si=hzazHsTGq8Ox6lmR
>Geniunelly scared as the torch makes shadows appear in the doorway of the room im in
>4am morning sound
>feel the biggest fucking weight on my shoulders lift as all the zombies revert to walkers
Night is ruined for me now im t oo experenced at killing zombies to be scared by a few running at me but man those first nights and horde night was fucking nerve racking

>>715916234A classic. I remember going there for the first time, back in 2007 and having to stop playing because it was too much. Also look into the developer commentary about the level, in specific the first few minutes of the level. It's really awesome to see how they created the tonal shift and set up the idea of using the gravity gun a primary weapon for it. Like how you see the saw blade that cut the guy in half, the explosive barrels and other objects used through out the whole level. All within a few moments of entering a completely "new" game, and how they made the area basically a tutorial for how or what ways to interact with the environment and hazards, without directly telling you. All by just set dressing and building an area that shows you, not tells you. I had no idea that was what they were actively doing, until I heard them talk about how they did it and pulled it off, imo flawlessly. If you like that kinda of story building and atmosphere, look into Cry Of Fear. It's free and a very well done mod.
>>715917281Can you save the game

>>715916857Fuck Lynch, he was a hack. Lynch was "God" at creating surrealist, incoherent visuals and meaningless gibberish that that could only ever be truly deciphered by Lynch himself.

>>715917864I don't think so, i just googled it and apparently wild felynes and melynx don't place traps, and even if they did, they never wander out of their areas. You can see the trap is in zone 4, where the run down cabin is, and felynes only spawn in zone 3. Melynx don't spawn in this map at all unless it's a "deliver 20 jaggi penises/eggs" kind of quest.

>>715896084 (OP)Hyper realistic blood
Horror games have lost their touch because they think adding a jingle to a monster's presence automatically makes them scary. Sure, being in a Japanese mansion and suddenly hearing that bell sound out of nowhere when you have no fucking clue where it came from is scary, but Mister Slobbercock jumping out with the first few notes of Moonlight Sonata? That's just goofy as shit. Horror needs to not have itself announced unless that announcement is meaningful. Let me walk around a corner and suddenly be face to face with an uncanny... well, face. Let me turn around while watching a drone fly overhead, only to notice something humanoid is running at me on all fours while just barely being illuminated. Give me horror that doesn't put up a fucking sign that says "be scared now" like a live audience in a fucking Oprah episode. No warning is the best warning.
>>715918491It pretty deliberately stopped being a horror film after they fully revealed the aliens, dumbass

The scrarecrow sequences are still kino as fuck even now
I wish I could experience the scares fresh again.
This thread reminded me of it, but there was a piece of art by some semi-popular horror artist I saw a few years ago. It was a two-image(maybe more) set of a cop investigating a house while an injured boy points him, seemingly, asks him for help, while a dog is barking at both of them in the background. The next set of images has some sort of deformed monster bursting out of the door and attacking the officer while the boy morphs into the same sort of creature, with the dog jumping over the fence and escaping, knowing the officer is doomed.
Does anyone know what I'm talking about and have it? It spooked the fuck out of me when I saw it and was really well done.
Admittedly I was about 16 when this came out but: no horror game has scared me more than the house in Underhell Prologue. It's the source engine eeriness and lack of music combined with the fact that there's actually a monster waiting for you at the end when you uncover all the secrets. Something about it being an ordinary house that slowly feels more wrong over time. Any tiny little sound effect becomes pants shittingly tense.

>>715918724I feel like horror games have the same issues as horror movies, television, comics, etc. that being it's very easy for a person of any level of experience to create and copy what was successful with them, without understand what and why it made them successful. That and the fact that horror in media has proven time and again how a low budget can reward extremely high rewards. Youre left with a saturated genre of the same tropes that aren't effective and the ones that are/could be get drowned out since a thousand similar came out and watered down the gimmick/trope. It applies to any form of story telling but horror by and large has the most

My story with horror games is that after I tried one in VR, I never got scared in any game again. But that time really fucked me up good. It was paralyzing. The fear made me literally stop in my tracks and never continue playing the game again. I don't even remember what game it was. It was actually some tech demo I think, there were a lot in the early VR days.
You were put in some space station. The audio and dark environment design really made it feel desolate. Except you know it's a horror game so you're probably not alone. And then you come to it, a hallway that's dark at the end, except for a very vague figure, with something that looks like a pair of eyes. Just far away enough that you can't quite make it out. Is it a person? A ghost? A robot? A creature? Maybe just a fakeout? Normally this kind of set piece is common in horror games and you wouldn't bat an eye and just yolo it. But when you're in there, in VR, and the game has perfectly set up the atmosphere, the fear of the unknown yanks your brain by the balls and tells you to back the fuck up. I stood there for some moments, and then took the headset off. It wasn't like the webms where the guy gets jumpscared and sprints into a wall or smashes his TV with the motion controller. No this fear was sinister. Absolute evil.
Now that's horror.

Alan Wake 2 actually spooked me a few times. I think the most spooked I've gotten since playing SH1 or 4 or Fatal Frame 2 as a young teen.
I can't take any horror with female villains seriously. Not because I don't think a woman could beat me up because I'm a wimp, but because I desperately want it to happen.

>>715896084 (OP)Remember that scene in Indiana Jones where you picked up an artifact and a big boulder was chasing you? Yeah that.
Just a week ago playing No Man's Sky.
Was hyperdriving to a planet so far away the jouney was still estimated to take two minutes. While travelling I checked my inventory, moved some stuff along, refilled my backpack refinery and all of a sudden the space turned black!
My hud was still functional, but the space ahead was just blackness. I turned off hypertravel and still just blackness. I could hear my engines trusting back and forth and changing direction, but just blackness. After a minute in confussion. I heard something warping in, sounding like the usual freighter fleet. All of a sudden I heard a loud clipping roar, which I've never closeley heard before. Immideatly closed the game.

Also IHNMAIMS isn't really scary. It's infinite torment on an infinite scale by being a gloopy monster in infinite pain and not having your limbs and organs and whatever. Yeah, that sucks. But it's not scary. It's too over the top and ridiculous to be scary.
>i just remember the one where it could only rememeber its name and got sad. If you dont find the idea effectiveIt's honestly not in terms of fear. It's dementia and lobotomy without any of what really makes it scary, and even then dementia and lobotomies aren't very scary. Just a "yeah that fucking sucks and it's sad" sorta thing.
>>715926757>assuming you completed it, how would you rate the bunker compared to dark descent and rebirth? The Bunker is my most-replayed game ever. I'd put it above Dark Descent, and both far above Rebirth.
The fuel is meant to be stressful. You can get unlimited fuel rather quickly, but you're always meant to have time pressuring you to work fast, lest you be chased by the monster in the dark.
It's a roguelite. Go give it a replay. Especially if you toggle on a few of the custom settings, like harder fuel room access, no gun at the start, increased monster presence, unsafe safe room, or just installing the Survival mod.

>>715918491>>715919015The twist (it's an M. Night Shyamalan movie, of course it has one) is that they're actually demons. The news mentions that people are able to shelter in places of worship. I haven't seen the movie in a while but pretty sure they say something about the little girl "blessing" the water she touches or something, so they're actually being harmed by holy water, not just any old water.
There's also the general theme of the father being a priest who's been losing his faith due to all the horrible things that's happened to him, like his wife dying in that freak accident (wherein she casually relays a fucking prophecy before she dies) and his son being terribly asthmatic. His son being asthmatic as badly as he was turned out to be a blessing since he couldn't be poisoned by the demon during his attack. In the end, these events serve to strengthen and renew his faith.
Not sure that actually makes the movie that much better, but that's the intended story.
