I fucking hate proper scary games.
Survival horror is fine cause i can fight back but amnesia the dark descent and SOMA both actually made me scream
Fatal frame 3 as well, but i dropped that game cause its actually fucking boring.
But horror just has this primal appeal to it, the rush of being terrified of something really taps into something.
So i just read about scary shit instead of playing games cause sound isnt involved and i can play some music to calm down.

I knew nothing about the game, hadn't read any previews or anything, but I really liked the first level.
Then the second level has you sneak through a mine. And I suddenly hear moaning from somewhere. Then this zombie is suddenly standing next to me and hitting me. I panic but manage to defeat it.
At this point I've no idea what I killed so I lean over the body to get a better look in the darkness. Then it fucking jumps back up and attacks me.
I pushed away with my arms so my mouse went over the edge of the desk and down to the floor. Fucking zombies.

I've played a lot of spooky games but none of them come even within a light year of the sheer terror that this scene made me feel, and I never found grey particularly scary or anything. Everything about it, from the mysterious global nature of the invasion, the way the alien is presented not in a hostile, but unknown manner, the look of horror on Joaquin's face. It was just a gut punch of extreme fear of the sort I know I'll never feel again in any form of media.

A classic. I remember going there for the first time, back in 2007 and having to stop playing because it was too much. Also look into the developer commentary about the level, in specific the first few minutes of the level. It's really awesome to see how they created the tonal shift and set up the idea of using the gravity gun a primary weapon for it. Like how you see the saw blade that cut the guy in half, the explosive barrels and other objects used through out the whole level. All within a few moments of entering a completely "new" game, and how they made the area basically a tutorial for how or what ways to interact with the environment and hazards, without directly telling you. All by just set dressing and building an area that shows you, not tells you. I had no idea that was what they were actively doing, until I heard them talk about how they did it and pulled it off, imo flawlessly. If you like that kinda of story building and atmosphere, look into Cry Of Fear. It's free and a very well done mod.

Not showing up with nukes is the only unrealistic part, of course a race of aliens weak to water would try to conquer a planet that is 90% water, they don't want the hairless apes to master space travel, as they would only need a fucking water hose to subjugate them.

Horror games have lost their touch because they think adding a jingle to a monster's presence automatically makes them scary. Sure, being in a Japanese mansion and suddenly hearing that bell sound out of nowhere when you have no fucking clue where it came from is scary, but Mister Slobbercock jumping out with the first few notes of Moonlight Sonata? That's just goofy as shit. Horror needs to not have itself announced unless that announcement is meaningful. Let me walk around a corner and suddenly be face to face with an uncanny... well, face. Let me turn around while watching a drone fly overhead, only to notice something humanoid is running at me on all fours while just barely being illuminated. Give me horror that doesn't put up a fucking sign that says "be scared now" like a live audience in a fucking Oprah episode. No warning is the best warning.

This thread reminded me of it, but there was a piece of art by some semi-popular horror artist I saw a few years ago. It was a two-image(maybe more) set of a cop investigating a house while an injured boy points him, seemingly, asks him for help, while a dog is barking at both of them in the background. The next set of images has some sort of deformed monster bursting out of the door and attacking the officer while the boy morphs into the same sort of creature, with the dog jumping over the fence and escaping, knowing the officer is doomed.
Does anyone know what I'm talking about and have it? It spooked the fuck out of me when I saw it and was really well done.
Anonymous No.715919584
Admittedly I was about 16 when this came out but: no horror game has scared me more than the house in Underhell Prologue. It's the source engine eeriness and lack of music combined with the fact that there's actually a monster waiting for you at the end when you uncover all the secrets. Something about it being an ordinary house that slowly feels more wrong over time. Any tiny little sound effect becomes pants shittingly tense.

I feel like horror games have the same issues as horror movies, television, comics, etc. that being it's very easy for a person of any level of experience to create and copy what was successful with them, without understand what and why it made them successful. That and the fact that horror in media has proven time and again how a low budget can reward extremely high rewards. Youre left with a saturated genre of the same tropes that aren't effective and the ones that are/could be get drowned out since a thousand similar came out and watered down the gimmick/trope. It applies to any form of story telling but horror by and large has the most

My story with horror games is that after I tried one in VR, I never got scared in any game again. But that time really fucked me up good. It was paralyzing. The fear made me literally stop in my tracks and never continue playing the game again. I don't even remember what game it was. It was actually some tech demo I think, there were a lot in the early VR days.

You were put in some space station. The audio and dark environment design really made it feel desolate. Except you know it's a horror game so you're probably not alone. And then you come to it, a hallway that's dark at the end, except for a very vague figure, with something that looks like a pair of eyes. Just far away enough that you can't quite make it out. Is it a person? A ghost? A robot? A creature? Maybe just a fakeout? Normally this kind of set piece is common in horror games and you wouldn't bat an eye and just yolo it. But when you're in there, in VR, and the game has perfectly set up the atmosphere, the fear of the unknown yanks your brain by the balls and tells you to back the fuck up. I stood there for some moments, and then took the headset off. It wasn't like the webms where the guy gets jumpscared and sprints into a wall or smashes his TV with the motion controller. No this fear was sinister. Absolute evil.

Now that's horror.

Jumpscares are not being scared. They're an analytical moment where you body is decided whether to fight or run, there's no true fear, just surprise. They're cheap and worthless.

My hud was still functional, but the space ahead was just blackness. I turned off hypertravel and still just blackness. I could hear my engines trusting back and forth and changing direction, but just blackness. After a minute in confussion. I heard something warping in, sounding like the usual freighter fleet. The Bunker is my most-replayed game ever. I'd put it above Dark Descent, and both far above Rebirth.
The fuel is meant to be stressful. You can get unlimited fuel rather quickly, but you're always meant to have time pressuring you to work fast, lest you be chased by the monster in the dark.
It's a roguelite. Go give it a replay. Especially if you toggle on a few of the custom settings, like harder fuel room access, no gun at the start, increased monster presence, unsafe safe room, or just installing the Survival mod.

The twist (it's an M. Night Shyamalan movie, of course it has one) is that they're actually demons. The news mentions that people are able to shelter in places of worship. I haven't seen the movie in a while but pretty sure they say something about the little girl "blessing" the water she touches or something, so they're actually being harmed by holy water, not just any old water.
There's also the general theme of the father being a priest who's been losing his faith due to all the horrible things that's happened to him, like his wife dying in that freak accident (wherein she casually relays a fucking prophecy before she dies) and his son being terribly asthmatic. His son being asthmatic as badly as he was turned out to be a blessing since he couldn't be poisoned by the demon during his attack. In the end, these events serve to strengthen and renew his faith.
Not sure that actually makes the movie that much better, but that's the intended story.

The Harvester one of the family dying in the forest was some harrowing shit

They absolutely have the mental state to inflict worse torments than most men would, they're only limited by their lesser physical capabilities. Don't have it on hand, but I'm sure you must have seen that one black woman beating and stomping her own baby to death because it vomited on the couch.

I'm pretty sure the husky was the original smiledog and the image you posted was just the one that got popular. It just so happens that most of the modern renditions of smiledog use the older one as a reference because it's creepy without being over the top like something from the jeff the killer era of creepypastas.

I remember when they added webm with sounds I was in the "first" thread. Someone posted a basic screamer with some puppy I think and I nearly threw my laptop across the room.

honestly the childhood molestation backstory had literally no purpose and killed my mood with the 2nd game
which sucks because the whole off the grid, cults gimmick is a very good theme for horror
