None. Video games aren't scary.

And no, jumpscares aren't scary. Humans are conditioned to jump if not expecting it with loud noises, not the sense as a sense of dread that persists.

The ending of this game got me good, hands off the keyboard and mouse kind of jump, and this was after several attempts strewn throughout that didn't faze me.

VR is also getting better at horror, but after playing spooky stuff in VRChat (which are all over the place in terms of quality) you can really tell just how limited games were at first.

>2011 and playing in the dark
>Playing that boss fight with the giant tall doll looking bitch (The best monster design in the game)
>Playing in my living room on one of those office/table chairs that kinda has your ass uncovered/sticking out when you sit down
>Part of the boss fight where the giant doll bitch goes into the rafters above offscreen and then jumps down after a few seconds to attack you
>Waiting for her to jump down and tensed up because my health is low because I didn't understand the concept of blocking in that game
>My fucking cat for no reason decides now is a good time to quickly stick both paws on my ass and scratch me
>Scream and quickly get up to see what the fuck just did that
>Cat runs away in fear

I fucking hate proper scary games.
Survival horror is fine cause i can fight back but amnesia the dark descent and SOMA both actually made me scream
Fatal frame 3 as well, but i dropped that game cause its actually fucking boring.
But horror just has this primal appeal to it, the rush of being terrified of something really taps into something.
So i just read about scary shit instead of playing games cause sound isnt involved and i can play some music to calm down.

Single biggest scare when I was playing Thief.
I knew nothing about the game, hadn't read any previews or anything, but I really liked the first level.
Then the second level has you sneak through a mine. And I suddenly hear moaning from somewhere. Then this zombie is suddenly standing next to me and hitting me. I panic but manage to defeat it.
At this point I've no idea what I killed so I lean over the body to get a better look in the darkness. Then it fucking jumps back up and attacks me.
I pushed away with my arms so my mouse went over the edge of the desk and down to the floor. Fucking zombies.

I've played a lot of spooky games but none of them come even within a light year of the sheer terror that this scene made me feel, and I never found grey particularly scary or anything. Everything about it, from the mysterious global nature of the invasion, the way the alien is presented not in a hostile, but unknown manner, the look of horror on Joaquin's face. It was just a gut punch of extreme fear of the sort I know I'll never feel again in any form of media.

Do you guys know what I'm talking about with this?

Actually to follow up on my second point I think I get it if you look at it from an in-world perspective, they've spent the last week with zero answers about what is going on and the first time they have a "concrete answer" its a grainy video of an alien, so I am kind of sympathetic.

Just a week ago i went back to monhun, portable turd to be exact, and i got meme'd on by a digital ghost or whatever the fuck. This is probably the only paranormal experience i've had inside a videogame and it isn't scary in the slightest.
>hunting duramboros over and over again, capturing them because i need a tailbone for my hammer
>15 minutes in he starts limping (it'd honestly be way quicker if i could just wail on it until it died, but i need to break his tail once, wait for it to do a bodyslam, mine his tail then cut it off completely)
>just as i'm about to place a pitfall trap, i notice there's already one in place
>go check it out, it's a shocktrap
>i don't even carry any of them, hell i don't carry pitfall traps either, i'm using the one they provide to you in the quest
>have to wait around 5 minutes until it explodes so i can place my own
These are village quests too so a random person joining me isn't even a possibility, i don't know how to set up the online in this game either.

Omega Flowey himself isn't that scary, but I remember reaching the neutral ending in my first run at like 2am. I was exhausted and something about his design and being up at that hour just made me fucking piss terrified of him for some reason. I kept dying to him repeatedly and was so scared I didn't want to boot the game anymore, but a friend egged me on and pushed me to keep it up. Then once I finally got all the souls after seven or so attempts, with Finale playing as I fucked his shit up, it was one of the most satisfying ludo moment of my life.

A classic. I remember going there for the first time, back in 2007 and having to stop playing because it was too much. Also look into the developer commentary about the level, in specific the first few minutes of the level. It's really awesome to see how they created the tonal shift and set up the idea of using the gravity gun a primary weapon for it. Like how you see the saw blade that cut the guy in half, the explosive barrels and other objects used through out the whole level. All within a few moments of entering a completely "new" game, and how they made the area basically a tutorial for how or what ways to interact with the environment and hazards, without directly telling you. All by just set dressing and building an area that shows you, not tells you. I had no idea that was what they were actively doing, until I heard them talk about how they did it and pulled it off, imo flawlessly. If you like that kinda of story building and atmosphere, look into Cry Of Fear. It's free and a very well done mod.

A felyne maybe? I see you don't have one but it could have been a wild one. I don't know if I've ever seen it but since your cats can learn to place shock traps it isn't to far fetched that wild felynes can randomly place them.
Why though I have no idea.

I don't think so, i just googled it and apparently wild felynes and melynx don't place traps, and even if they did, they never wander out of their areas. You can see the trap is in zone 4, where the run down cabin is, and felynes only spawn in zone 3. Melynx don't spawn in this map at all unless it's a "deliver 20 jaggi penises/eggs" kind of quest.

Horror games have lost their touch because they think adding a jingle to a monster's presence automatically makes them scary. Sure, being in a Japanese mansion and suddenly hearing that bell sound out of nowhere when you have no fucking clue where it came from is scary, but Mister Slobbercock jumping out with the first few notes of Moonlight Sonata? That's just goofy as shit. Horror needs to not have itself announced unless that announcement is meaningful. Let me walk around a corner and suddenly be face to face with an uncanny... well, face. Let me turn around while watching a drone fly overhead, only to notice something humanoid is running at me on all fours while just barely being illuminated. Give me horror that doesn't put up a fucking sign that says "be scared now" like a live audience in a fucking Oprah episode. No warning is the best warning.

This thread reminded me of it, but there was a piece of art by some semi-popular horror artist I saw a few years ago. It was a two-image(maybe more) set of a cop investigating a house while an injured boy points him, seemingly, asks him for help, while a dog is barking at both of them in the background. The next set of images has some sort of deformed monster bursting out of the door and attacking the officer while the boy morphs into the same sort of creature, with the dog jumping over the fence and escaping, knowing the officer is doomed.
Does anyone know what I'm talking about and have it? It spooked the fuck out of me when I saw it and was really well done.

Admittedly I was about 16 when this came out but: no horror game has scared me more than the house in Underhell Prologue. It's the source engine eeriness and lack of music combined with the fact that there's actually a monster waiting for you at the end when you uncover all the secrets. Something about it being an ordinary house that slowly feels more wrong over time. Any tiny little sound effect becomes pants shittingly tense.

I feel like horror games have the same issues as horror movies, television, comics, etc. that being it's very easy for a person of any level of experience to create and copy what was successful with them, without understand what and why it made them successful. That and the fact that horror in media has proven time and again how a low budget can reward extremely high rewards. Youre left with a saturated genre of the same tropes that aren't effective and the ones that are/could be get drowned out since a thousand similar came out and watered down the gimmick/trope. It applies to any form of story telling but horror by and large has the most

To me, that game suffers from the same thing that Subnautica does. When you first encounter the Leviathan, you are scared shitless. After a few times of getting caught/killed, you are already like "oh my god this is so annoying" and its just not scary anymore.

My story with horror games is that after I tried one in VR, I never got scared in any game again. But that time really fucked me up good. It was paralyzing. The fear made me literally stop in my tracks and never continue playing the game again. I don't even remember what game it was. It was actually some tech demo I think, there were a lot in the early VR days.

You were put in some space station. The audio and dark environment design really made it feel desolate. Except you know it's a horror game so you're probably not alone. And then you come to it, a hallway that's dark at the end, except for a very vague figure, with something that looks like a pair of eyes. Just far away enough that you can't quite make it out. Is it a person? A ghost? A robot? A creature? Maybe just a fakeout? Normally this kind of set piece is common in horror games and you wouldn't bat an eye and just yolo it. But when you're in there, in VR, and the game has perfectly set up the atmosphere, the fear of the unknown yanks your brain by the balls and tells you to back the fuck up. I stood there for some moments, and then took the headset off. It wasn't like the webms where the guy gets jumpscared and sprints into a wall or smashes his TV with the motion controller. No this fear was sinister. Absolute evil.

Now that's horror.

>sh4 is still underrated
Although I think SH3 is the better game overall, SH4 is the most scary, and it is the only video game that ever game me a real nightmare. I still come back to listen to its OST now and then to feel haunted again.

Even funnier if you actually bought the $5 tie in puzzle game they sold a month before DS2's release, he was supposed to be a major character since the dude has been working on breaking isaac out, then he dies in the fucking intro before he can explain anything. Apparently they retconned the whole thing because dana also ends up being evil for some reason.

Playing Silent Hill 1 on PS3. When you get to the final boss, the second you land an attack on it all audio cuts out and every subsequent attack creates a high pitched creepy pasta sound that gets higher and higher.
I actually think it elevates the ending. Scared the shit out of me.

it wasn't really as instant dread or surprising as some other things
but as far as "spooked" goes this takes the cake
before this moment there wasn't really a hint or a clue that anyone could know where you are or was near you besides npc's
it was so unexpected it unnerved me enough to the point that i genuinely wondered if i could even keep playing the game

Just a week ago playing No Man's Sky.
Was hyperdriving to a planet so far away the jouney was still estimated to take two minutes. While travelling I checked my inventory, moved some stuff along, refilled my backpack refinery and all of a sudden the space turned black!
My hud was still functional, but the space ahead was just blackness. I turned off hypertravel and still just blackness. I could hear my engines trusting back and forth and changing direction, but just blackness. After a minute in confussion. I heard something warping in, sounding like the usual freighter fleet. All of a sudden I heard a loud clipping roar, which I've never closeley heard before. Immideatly closed the game.

Are you actually like 10?
Also IHNMAIMS isn't really scary. It's infinite torment on an infinite scale by being a gloopy monster in infinite pain and not having your limbs and organs and whatever. Yeah, that sucks. But it's not scary. It's too over the top and ridiculous to be scary.
>i just remember the one where it could only rememeber its name and got sad. If you dont find the idea effective
It's honestly not in terms of fear. It's dementia and lobotomy without any of what really makes it scary, and even then dementia and lobotomies aren't very scary. Just a "yeah that fucking sucks and it's sad" sorta thing.

>assuming you completed it, how would you rate the bunker compared to dark descent and rebirth?
The Bunker is my most-replayed game ever. I'd put it above Dark Descent, and both far above Rebirth.
The fuel is meant to be stressful. You can get unlimited fuel rather quickly, but you're always meant to have time pressuring you to work fast, lest you be chased by the monster in the dark.
It's a roguelite. Go give it a replay. Especially if you toggle on a few of the custom settings, like harder fuel room access, no gun at the start, increased monster presence, unsafe safe room, or just installing the Survival mod.

The twist (it's an M. Night Shyamalan movie, of course it has one) is that they're actually demons. The news mentions that people are able to shelter in places of worship. I haven't seen the movie in a while but pretty sure they say something about the little girl "blessing" the water she touches or something, so they're actually being harmed by holy water, not just any old water.
There's also the general theme of the father being a priest who's been losing his faith due to all the horrible things that's happened to him, like his wife dying in that freak accident (wherein she casually relays a fucking prophecy before she dies) and his son being terribly asthmatic. His son being asthmatic as badly as he was turned out to be a blessing since he couldn't be poisoned by the demon during his attack. In the end, these events serve to strengthen and renew his faith.
Not sure that actually makes the movie that much better, but that's the intended story.

They absolutely have the mental state to inflict worse torments than most men would, they're only limited by their lesser physical capabilities. Don't have it on hand, but I'm sure you must have seen that one black woman beating and stomping her own baby to death because it vomited on the couch.
