On the opposite side of the map, there is also a time-based objective that we're admittedly good at getting: Erk. In this run, he's shaping up to be an MVP, so it makes sense that anon wanted to recruit him as fast as possible.
Combine that with the fact that the distance between the pirates and the village seems large since people don't factor in the rain and there's good reason to believe that once again, someone got too confident about having the pirates on lockdown.

The fundamental issue here is that this is a rare, genuinely time-sensitive objective in FE, and anons like to play slow and steady, they like to deathball. This has been proven over and over again. Following the screenshots, it's obvious what happened. He choked for too many turns at first, then the rain screwed him out from moving Hector and Oswin to the south like he planned. That's why i said screenshots (plural). If you look at his previous turns, he played way too defensively in general and faced the music when the rain started. Even Erk was a close call with his strat, since his plan was to box out Erk from the entire south of the map for the recruitment.
Again, he clearly had a bad strategy in mind since he didn't consider how little time he truly had to intercept the pirates. I won't say he played well, but he clearly didn't grift either.
