We should be grateful the game is as long and as coherent as it is, as it didn't have a full dev cycle. SH2 underpferormed in sales (something the Sh fans neglect to mention), so the budget of SH3 and 4 were slashed and rushed out.

They cut almost all the street segments and it's very obvious. I think the game was meant to take place in the north, and you revisit Alchemdia hospital. You may notice heather does an awful lot of teleporting around the map in the final game.

Oh fuck no, are you naive? They never fix anything. They spend the entire dev cycle remaking the game, which is jsut as rushed and with as much crunch as the original, and often have less content. Instead of porting and adding, they remake and do nothing.

Demon Souls remake still is lacking the extra continent. It should have just been a faithful port and they finished the last arch stone. Done. A reason to play teh damn thing.

It's a mid game, honestly.

I play the OG SH2 every year, this year I'm playing with the over the shoulder camera mod to just change things a little bit.

But SH2R misses the mark. The cutscenes are inferior. They keep focusing on the FACE. They have a FACE MOCAP TECH so they NEED TO SHOW IT, which detracts from every single cutscene.

My issue with the remake:
-plays like every single other over the shoulder UE5 game ever made
-padded to hell and back
-is that a brand new room that wasn't in the original game? I wonder what is th- ammo and mannequin, repeat 10x
-the aesthetic is taken straight from the movies, not from the original game
-sanitized textures, they have no grunge grime whatsoever
-boss fight changes (every boss except for eddie roars now)
-seriously, the roaring is a real fucking problem, am I playing a generic fucking MMO? why is every boss roaring with particles falling from the ceiling?
-Maria's VA sounds bored (good as Mary, though, except for the letter reading)
-Maria is not sexy

-Absolutely garbage butchered letter reading and they removed important parts of the letter

SH2 underperformed, leading to Konami having no faith in the franchise. All indicationes are that Sh2 sold 1-2 million, less than the origina's 2 million.

Team Silent had their chance and they blew it. They made ti too moody, too atmospheric, too laid back, and it didn't click with gamers at all. The first 15% of the game is really bad for new players with the long walking, lack of direction, and how easy it is to get confused.

Haven't played the games since their PC release dates way back then, watched a streamer play through 2 and 3 recently, and what surprised me the most is how awful the acting is. Pretty much none of the scenes feel natural, it's like people are literally reading their lines out loud from a piece of paper. Basically only Heather's VA was any good at all. The iconic "they look like monsters to you?" line fell completely flat. I know the die-hard fans hate hearing this, but Konami is definitely in the right for remaking these games from scratch.

Konami only remade the games because
a) They lost the source codes for all their PS1/PS2 games a long time ago and probably don't want to pay for getting them reverse engineered like they did with Bluepoint's MGS HD Collection and I think most of us here are also aware of how lazy their Master Collection port was even though Metal Gear is their second biggest series. Instead they provided an inexperienced studio with incomplete source codes for SH2 and SH3 so they had to spend most of their limited time ironing out bugs that the original team had already fixed
b) Jeremy Blaustein fucked up by not drawing up contracts for the voice actors back in the day so Guy Cihi, David Schaufele, Monica Taylor Horgan and Donna Burke all had to sign their rights away in order for the HD Collection to be able to provide their voices but they couldn't get in touch with the elevator radio show host. SH3 didn't have that luxury at all and only Donna Burke performs in both games.
and c) Christophe Gans is actually the only reason the series got a revival. After RE2R's success Gans convinced Konami they should let him make a new movie by adapting SH2 this time and also make new games themselves

yeah the problem i have with SH3 is that it feels like going through a bunch of video game levels with little grounding, it fails to sell you on the idea of being in a coherent place, but i don't think it's entirely down to lack of budget. the choice of environments isn't very good either. the mall, subway, sewer, office blocks and amusement park don't exactly resonate thematically or even in terms of relatability - they aren't very familiar places on average. the subway and office buildings could be, but they're not portrayed in a very convincing way, which to be fair could be a budget issue, but i think it's more than that.

if i had to guess, the issue with silent hill 3 was the developers being forced to make something they didn't really want to make (a sequel to SH1) in combination with budget cuts. talent is still evident but passion is lacking. really, it's hard to believe there were budget cuts with how creative some of the set pieces were, and how good the game looks.

Look at where Heather visits in the game, and note all the teleporting she does. She completes Brookhaven then zaps up to Lakeside Amusement park.

Now note how the southern resort town has a bunch of things right next to each other:

Conclusion: I think the game is meant to take palce in the resort area, and due to time/budget they were forced to re-use the SH2 map. If you were running around these places, it'd probably make it more coherent.
