Most of the time, your base will look like a homeless shelter. Hell, the only time your bases wont look like that is towards the endgame (level 50-65) when you actually have resources to spend on making your base look better or time to devote to remaking the base entirely.

That being said, there is a lot more to offer under the hood than most gameplay footage will let you see, and that's the meat right there.

Shooting fees pretty good, dodging, jumping, m running, and sliding in battle work well.
Mounting a pal and manually using heir skills is dope as hell.
Melee is the worst part of it being merely functional, I think.

That depends entirely on what you mean by good.

I can give you a rundown though. You start off on an island with practically nothing on you save for some scraps of cloth. You're told you wont survive the night unless you get your ass moving by the tutorial NPC who hives you the bare minimum of information, but it starts a chain reaction: Get materials, get a Pal, and just survive the night. So you'll start cutting down trees, picking up ores, making the shittiest workbench you've ever seen, using said workbench to make the shittiest weapon and tools you can, then clubbing down pals until you finally capture one.

By this time, you're thinking to yourself "Is this it? Is this really what everyone was harping on about?" until you see your pal gathering things up. Then you'll catch another pal, and another, and another. All of them will do something, and all of them help immensely as you start making some shack for you and yours.

You and your pals will improve, as well as your base, and you'll get to making makeshift guns, swords, better pal spheres, maybe even a few pieces of armor. You're sitting pretty, nothings really come to bother you beyond what you've pissed off.

Until the first raid comes, and your hut becomes a battlefield. If you survive, it'll be because you and your pals kicked some serious ass. If you die, then you either quit, or make a way more defensible hut.

This snowballs into making an impenetrable fortress later on towards the late game, becoming master of your proverbial island, and making everyone you come across your friend, your slave, your next meal, or another corpse on the pile. That is if you are smart about it.

The gunplay is good. The capture system is good for what it is, the exploration is great, the rewards for doing even small tasks are large, but not game-changing, every little thing you and your pals do is helpful and beneficial in some way or another.

There is nothing bad for doing literally anything you want to do, the game doesn't pigeonhole you into doing shit you don't want to, and there are a myriad of ways to get stuff done. That being said, it won't hold you hand: If you want it done, you better be prepared to do the work.

Besides what the other anons already said, one thing that is really good for a survivalcrafting game like Palworld basically is, is that you can adjust a lot of settings for your preferred amount of gameplay difficulty. Shit like how much damage you do, how much damage enemies do and whatnot. Usually you need a mod to adjust those beyond "this is Hard mode which means enemies now have 5 times more HP than Normal and hit 7.2 times as hard as you did with endgame weapons in Normal mode". It's something that I want more survivalcrafting games to do in the future as well, because at this point I don't think the genre really has a lot of room to evolve further in the gameplay mechanics.

Traps as an abstract concept. Mines are a good thing, Pals with status effects beyond burn, like electric pals that can shock and stun Bellanoir, status grenades, the whole shebang. Some people got really crafty and were able to set up rudimentary tripmines (although this was back before the Sakurajima update and I never actually saw them in practice so this may be out of date info).

The point is to use every weapon in your arsenal and even at level 45 you should be able to bring her down fairly quickly.

Expect a LOT, if not all, of your pals to be knocked out in the process though, which is just further incentive to go Scorched Earth on her.

If it's worth doing, it most certainly is fucking worth over-doing

That's gonna be the result if your pal limit per base is more than 20. There' just not enough space to build the facilities so you'll inevitably build towers to accommodate all the structures for the pals to work on. When I was playing SP, I had a 15 pal limit and it look cozy but rather sparse. Then in this MP server with 35 limit, it's an ugly tower to fit everything in it.

Im not going to lie, I bitched out in making it. I turned incubation off, drop rate to 3x, and it STILL took me and my friend 3 full days of leaving the computer on all night, getting the Hexolite quartz, getting the Chromite, then breeding 4 Breeding Farms worth of Whalaska's just to chuck into the Pal Disassembly conveyor to get at their Coralum to make myself and my friend one rifle each.

I immediately turned them all back on after making around 300 rounds for each rifle, but god damn. Making them was the most pain-in-the-ass objective I ever made for myself and I would NOT have had the energy nor time to willfully expend on making just one on stock drop rates.

Don't get me wrong, I'm now downing Attack Choppers left and right every time they spawn, but god damn, it was ALMOST not worth making just by how time-consuming it was.

Honestly, there isn't terribly much to improve upon. The core of the game is fairly well polished as it is. The only aspects I would like to be added are just simple background music, a little more leeway in base-building (Ladders are a fucking nightmare to set up, getting things to snap just right on uneven surfaces is still a pain in the dick, etc...), and maybe something like more interaction between settlements and the player would be nice, but not necessary.

By the time you're crafting legendary charge rifles you have infinite food and money. Breeding something and occasionally swinging by the base to chuck them all into the disassembler is a lot less hands-on than salvaging, so you can either do something else, or do both in parallel.

I didn't find it too bad with four fully condensed jellroys and a fast water mount. Every salvage run of about 1000 weight (about 5 minutes per run) I was getting around 330 coralum ore up along the west coast of the volcano area.

The real hell for me was the hexolite bars. I had to somehow make over 3500 of them for 3 leg weapon schematics plus ammo.

See, when I started making my rifle, I was level 58 (like I said, got the schematic from salvage) so the hexolite quartz and the chromite were my bottlenecks, so every morning, and every evening I'd hike out to Feybreak and mine as much Hexolite as I could, bring it back, and head out once more to farm the chromite until I had a full pack (and having 2450 carry weight helped a ton). By the time I was done with both, it was either noon or midnight, and then I could just dick about doing what needed to be done and didn't worry about coralum until I could get to 62 and use the fishing magnets for dredging salvage.

Once I hit 62 and started dredging every afternoon (couldn't see shit at midnight) is when I got fed up with stock drop rates, and coincidentally shortly after that found out Whalaskas dropped coralum. Then the lightbulb in my head went off and told myself to breed and disassemble them.

From there on out, it was just arming myself up to kill Bjorn so I could get hexolite mining stations in my base and once I did that, it opened up the mornings and evenings up a LOT more.

Still took 3 days to make 2 of those rifles, but it was better than me trying to min-max my fuckin base.

I will stand my ground against this type of criticism.
The game made a deliberate design choice of having you listen to the sounds of nature and the pal cries as a sonar to alert you of the pals nearby, including the ones you dont see behind you. It was also deliberate that music only plays during combat making music an aggro alert. Special pals, like luckies and predators are also first detected by a sound signal aura. So sound is very much a game mechanic.
The game already has a rich soundtrack, especially for an indie - it does not need constant music playing.

6)Flying would be a lot less mundane if you could get assaulted by other flying pals or humans flying around a restrict airspace (currently only anti-air turrets deter you, but they're too damn easy to circumvent) and it would be a little more fun to have air-exclusive encounters or fights that take place in the sky like shit turns into Star Fox gameplay.
7)WEATHER. I want weather effects that range from a mild rain to a fucking hurricane that can wreck your base if you didn't build to circumvent it. I want to get jumpscared by a Blizzard that forces me to hide into a cave and need to cuddle a warm firetype pal Wixen to stay warm. I want pals to appear exclusively on certain weather conditions (or even have pals summon said weather conditions)

you can edit the options at anytime, your first base doesn't need to be a real base, you can just scatter shit on the ground if you wanna then build a real base later as more base options open. the sheep crafts, carries, and shed its fur but you need a ranch for it to shed its fur, you can force them to do whatever using the monitoring stand, and this image shows what they will and will not do (farming means ranch)

Single player is fine unless you have a friend to play with, same with default difficulty although I'd recommend setting item weight to half or so.

Get a Cattiva and an Eikthdeer, the former will mine and the latter will chop wood. Lamball can transport items on the ground but it can't harvest resources. Pals who can transport items also need a storage chest to store the items in.

Following the "main" quest is like a tutorial, pay attention to what buildings it asks you to build, same with when you upgrade your base at the Pal box as those will be important in getting more resources and improving your base. In "Options" there's also a Survival Guide which has additional info.
