Time for bed, I'll catch the rest of Grinch tomorrow. Overall this ASM has been decent, really weird that all the trannies were frontloaded but after that it recovered. Grinch as the finale is funny as fuck. Dogwater was a blast, I might catch some of the randomizer.

Until next time, which is... BSG or RTA I think.

This, especially when you look at the really big marathons that are run by management types who don't speedrun, don't have any interest in being seen near the running, they just show up at the start and end.

Noops was around a fucking lot, ran a game, sat on a bunch of RPG couches overnight while contributing with his knowledge of the runs, seemed to make a lot more fun for people around him. It's how these sort of events deserve to be led.

Yeah it really made me think that especially with GDQ, the fuckers don't come down from their penthouse early unless they're on track to not meet corporate goals. and even with ESA it takes an immense ego stroking to shift Edenal or Planks up front.

I can see this being a realistic course of events for any marathon, not even referring to ASM in particular here. It's probably not easy to admit to yourself that your marathon, that passionate brainchild event of yours, is - and should be - of limited impact to society, as is your own life. Pretty easy to succumb to delusions of grandeur and trying to save the world, pushing event growth as hard as possible, beyond the breaking point.

Being that ASM has been going for ten years pretty consistently at this sort of level for the last few, it's probably fine for now, especially with the current staff.
>Pretty easy to succumb to delusions of grandeur
That's basically what happened with ESA's management, though it mostly came out in conflicting with staff for knowing their jobs better than management, and eventually forcing them out for resisting their stupid ideas.

ASM was mostly solid all around, enjoyed it the most this year. ESA being back is great, stream 2 was great, 24h is great for the non-europeans. But it still has the same problems as before and lost a lot of staff and runners. Not the worst ESA ever, but also clearly not the best. Dogwater is pretty funny in a shitty way. And GDQ was the worst I have ever seen. It was almost unwatchable even with the auto-mute script. There were only a handful of runs I actually enjoyed.

ESA>ASM>>>Dog>GDQ
ESA was the best all round, but ASM's so comfy and it gets better every year. GDQ was so bland you couldn't even make fun of it. Dog Water does not have that problem, it's a shitshow. Just look at this shit. Listen to this shit. It's garbage, I love it.

Oh, I'm completely sympathetic. The runners are grand, I just don't like the game.

Dogwater is crazy by most marathon standards since normally people either finish all their runs in one block, or get a few days breather between runs. These guys are almost going nonstop passing the baton back and forth. I respect them more, actually, with that in mind

There is no such thing as perfection but ESA has by far the best balance between fun, event is big but not full corpo, still maintains a familiar vibe to it, is gay but not off putingly gay or obnoxious, it has extreme legends like the French accent guy or our lads Rebel Dragon and Tiny Tim

ESA >= ASM > Dogwater > Power Gap > Bathroom breaks > GDQ

ESA had a great game palette, but it lacked big moments aside from the Playstation Nation runs. ASM had a bit of cringe that it kept into manageable chunks while also having the most open fun, be it long runs or Werster runs. Dogwater bants are still top notch but the runs aren't as good and they're having stamina woes. GDQ is just the worst it's ever been and maybe the worst it will ever be. But who gives a shit about that when the rest has been so nice?

We're not done, though, you fags better be back for RTA and BSG

>On the outside, ESA is still fine, but all the talent agency / Tiltify / commitment to fundraising as primary goal is surely alienating a few people, even without the additional drama that went down.
More so than that, with the mismanagment issues being pasted over instead of resolved, they basically plan to burn through entire teams of staff every few events, and have a lot of stupid ideas like using AI for schedule shit. Eventually they'll run down their list of potential volunteers, a list that they think is infinite.

Yeah, I heard that several times by now. However, ASM and especially Dogwater show that most people don't care about event size, good production, competitive runs or professional tech. As long as an event is entertaining, a lot of fuckups will be forgiven, so it is not that difficult to organize an alternative.

I am skeptical about BSG/UKSG as ESA alternatives, though, these events appear to me like they will go down the GDQ path as soon as they become bigger.

Dogwater's a special case really because of their small scale and just being a bunch of friends fucking about, there's a lot less expectation there.
>a lot of fuckups will be forgiven
True with ESA, or possibly forgotten less than forgiven, they did some surface level stuff and even placated a lot of anons.
>I am skeptical about BSG/UKSG as ESA alternatives, though, these events appear to me like they will go down the GDQ path as soon as they become bigger.
I don't think BSG/NSG/UKSG will ever see the rapid expansion that caused GDQ to spin out of control with the corporate event shit, or that ESA got a fleeting taste of and has been desperate for more of ever since.

That said I don't think any of the other Euro marathons really need to replace ESA, they've got their own vibes and ways of doing stuff that set them apart, and I think that's fine.

Would they? Riek is in charge and reads these threads, so he knows the pitfalls. And they have ESA as a warning what can happen. Keep forgetting who is in charge of UKSG, but think a big part of their staff and runners also had a pretty big fallout with ESA. So both should know what not to do thanks to ESA.

Ah sorry, I should have clarified: I didn't mean the drama, I meant people are much more willing to forgive things like poor stream quality, trainwreck / over estimate runs and things like this, as long as the event feels like there's fun allowed.
>I don't think BSG/NSG/UKSG will ever see the rapid expansion that caused GDQ to spin out of control with the corporate event shit
Same, there's too many alternatives already, and there is only so much attention/money around. So, whichever event will come out as the leading one (if any) will hopefully have experienced organic growth.

>>715964091
I hope you are right, however when I tuned in to these events, they felt like they were, given their small size, somewhat routine, tame. Not sure whether I can explain that correctly, it's not that I need people to slur/curse on stream all the time. They looked clean and professional, people were doing good work, no doubt about it. I can't even say what exactly was missing, but I can tell that ASM for example had it. Call it energy or something. Maybe I just lack the faith that people like Huds or Skenmy, who may be decent lads, but were mostly boring at ESA, can make a great event out of UKSG. I will certainly tune in to BSG in August, maybe they prove me wrong, I am a firm believer in Riekelt supremacy after all. In fact I'd love it if they do.

So, overall thoughts on ASM this year?

I thought there was a lot of comfy runs, though nothing amazing and mindblowing. At least when I was awake. It was all really good stuff to semi-watch and mostly listen to while I do other things. The banter was also really good and they know how to keep your attention for a long run. It was quite fun having the graveyard shift on at prime time for me because I like the graveyard shift runs of these events but I started to feel eh on it when it meant all I got to see was the long JRPGs mostly and all the short runs were when I was asleep. Still, I liked the event overall.

I felt the threads for ESA this year were a lot better than the past two years or so. I think the fact ESA was before GDQ and not after is a significant reason for this since I feel the threads were being shit up due to shilling ESA in them and GDQ regulars moving to those threads after, while this year you'd have to have known it was on beforehand to really join in. Plus a lot of people thought it was perma dead for so reason so they didn't seek the event out.

Either way much better threads that weren't full of people having meltdowns over Metako for some reason.

The only drama this year was just dunking on silly Edenal which was pretty funny, joking about the ChatGPT schedule etc. The thread quality improved once Spyroposting became a thing.

That's literally the age you start building your permanent social circle though. The social circle you build in your mid 20s is the one you'll have going for the rest of your life.

Beyond retarded. Do things regularly, be nice to people, and you inevitably find people who will be happy to share your company any day of the week.
Most of my friend circle nowadays is from after my university and school days, in no small part because those people all fuck off after uni, if you haven't yourself already.

Does it really need that much of an improvement considering the circumstances? Despite a lot of the important regulars not being present the event went very well. Out of all these events ESA has the best balance of soul and skillful runs IMO.

>Does it really need that much of an improvement considering the circumstances?
Yes. Edenal made it a HUGE point at the end of Summer 2024 about how ESA needed to be fixed and that he skipped Winter 2025 to reflect, and spent the ending speech this past ESA about how he's doing better and how everyone stepped up to help and...
nothing about what exactly was wrong or what was being done.
But people are stepping up! There's so many volunteers!... to replace pushing away most of the prior staff over the past marathons. They brought back the safety team!... of Skenmy and Tali after shuffling them around the prior ESAs. They were able to get a stream 2 and 24 hours!... despite miscommunication fucking the schedule up even more. The event is all about speedruns!... despite pre-2020s ESAs still had gimmick runs that did help fix scheduling issues and keep it communal.

He can't even admit he fucked up, he keeps hiding behind the "everyone stepped up to help!" and put out a painfully safe ESA before trying again to roll out his terrible management ideas.

Even shit like >>715978201 >>715978338 is literal astroturfing about
>w-well he gets kudos for stepping up in spite of the drama (that he caused, tripled downed, and has the gall to memoryhole it by removing dissenters)
Hope you get what you want from constantly rotating out staff so no one knows your real face Edenal and Planks. God knows you're going to do everything to avoid getting caught again.

>skillful runs
At least 23 overestimates and 6 failed runs from a similar set of bottom of the barrel runners that GDQ is pulling from is skillful.
Surely you can list seven runs you genuinely thought were skillful.
You can't. Everything regarded highly were for factors beyond the run itslf sans Katamari and CTR, both delegated to stream 2 and get the boost of being "sovlful" and lax.

I think the problem is that we have 7 different runners all (obviously) focusing on their runs, whereas normally we'd have one guy running + couch to occasionally explain things in between all the shit-talking.

It's a fun idea but it's pretty quiet because everyone is in the zone, which then makes it hard to follow because someone on a side screen is probably gonna find an item that's important for some other game or something.

GDQ is beyond rotten to the core to care. Matty is irredeemably twisted beyond caring. I'll commend them for being honest in them committing to nepotism grooming from hosts into their circle a la Rubie and Melo. Edenal too much of a schizophrenic snake to commit to promoting people up the ranks now.
