Events and decision trees have ruined this genre and grand strategy. I predict in 10 years or so we'll have the ultimate "4x" that's just an unholy combo of Rimworld, Stellaris, and a Roguelite deckbuilder which will be praised for the innovation of not moving any units yourself, and everyone will talk about their "stories" when every game basically plays the same despite the 4,000 different decision popups you can make.
