Jazz1 was one of my favorite game as a kid, played the shareware version on a loop and was so fucking happy when I got the full version of few years later.

I still sometime listen to Jazz1 OST when working.
Jazz sucked for the same reason sonic and a lot of others did. The gameplay was based on moving fast, but then you had zero view distance to make course corrections.

The only frustrating bit in Jazz2 for me was the Medivo boss. It's pretty awkward to hit because of that chain and ball. I eventually found out that you can uppercut the chain and ball and break it for good. It sucks, but then again, Jazz2 has some cheats built-in that you can use too, they come in handy whenever you get hit with something stupid in a fan made level pack, so I'm willing to forgive it.

I remember the characters moved too damn fast for how far you could see, meaning you had to either take tiny steps against the whole theme of going fast or have the levels memorized. JJ2 modding is pretty gnarly. Down the Rabbit Hole is a pretty fun mod, just remember to skip the first level when the level gives you the option.

A combination of speedy gameplay, shooting and exploration-based level design, how is this not peak 2D platfoming? That's more than enough for a game, even without the DLC and Demo levels. Unless you're thinking of features and bosses, in which case I kinda agree. Just like Secret Files, the JJ2 City level is probably the prettiest level in the game. I guess I agree with most of that chart, except that I consider the jungle level to be well made, and its BGM is catchy.
Just lots of little polish things, like an animated cutscene between episodes would have added a lot. some kind of way to explain the wild transitions between level types. the levels themselves are giant labyrinths, but the tilesetts repeat in a way that makes it hard to unique terrain or landmarks. at least for me it all blurs together.
