Why does no one cares about The Outer Worlds 2 when the first game was successful?

This is one of those franchises that I genuinely think is better off not existing, fuck. Why are they dragging this poor property through several more years of life support?

>>715956687 (OP)Outer Worlds was completely soulless. I've never played a game that was more bland and unappealing before.
We all went into it expecting New Vegas and in a way we got it, just without all the stuff that made New Vegas memorable.
It didn't even have any major issues. It was a perfectly competent game that just wasn't fun or interesting. I was bored out of my mind playing it, why the fuck would I be hyped for a sequel?
The first one is what made me iffy on modern Obsidian. The game completely falls apart after the tutorial planet. The capital planet of the all the bigwig corpos is a fucking street with like 3 side quests, immensely disappointing.

>>715957236The game is actually custom-crafted specifically to make the player annoyed with the companions. It's aping Fallout, where the gameplay loop is that you come across a companion, you engage with them, and they're relatively deferential to you the player. They like you, they grow to idolize you for the things you do, etc. And you do their personal quests specifically so you can find out more about them and get closer to them.
But in The Outer Worlds it's kind of the opposite. Literally the first chick you meet who becomes your companion, actually doesn't even like you or care about you at all. Most of them are just assholes who need you to do stuff for them that is of no benefit to you. Her quest is literally that she's a lesbian (not for you) and is hot for some rando chick on a space station and she wants you to wingman her on a date so she can hook up.

Was the first one actually worth playing? I'm pretty sure I have an unclaimed key from some Humble Choice or Monthly years ago. Apparently all the companions are lesbians like in New Vegas and won't fuck you?
>>715959786The game actually never really (that I remember) comes out an makes a specific stance on capitalism/corporatism being "bad", specifically because they're trying really really hard to make it feel like Fallout in a "both sides of every issue kind of suck" way but instead of just making everyone absurd they make the people with jobs absurd corporate cultists and they make the people without jobs just downtrodden normals who want to live their lives. Which would make it an easy choice (I guess) except that every decision you have to make specifically is written so someone's life is made way worse because of it, or everyone's is.
It's just very dull and not very fun.

>>715960626Its aggressively mediocre. Its fine if you desperately want to play something like New Vegas but for whatever reason don't have access to New Vegas.
>>715960626>Was the first one actually worth playing? No, not really. It's Fallout 3 or New Vegas, but instead of being a relatively open world it's a series of a few isolated exploration zones you can bounce between, and there's nearly nothing in the way of loot, items, or interesting things to see and do. The characters are super one-note and often insultingly bad and most of them exist to make you feel like a glorified servant for the whole game.
It's about as forgettable and uninteresting as it is possible for a video game to be.
>>715956687 (OP)I would be hyped for it if Outer Worlds 1 and Avowed didn't exist.

Not that every quest needs to be yet another ethical dilemma trolley problem with no clear right answer, but I do find that sort of quest most interesting than just a checklist of everyone's problems which I solve for them by doing the morally correct and ethically uncomplicated thing every time like you end up doing in most RPGs. Go fix the generator, go find my lost son, escort the doctor sick kids at the orphanage. I find that sort of shit boring as fuck. Then every NPC acts like you're Jesus for fixing all their problems and strokes your ego because you did the right thing, even though you didn't face a single difficult choice or messy situation.
I generally like the choice between "Keep my hands clean, but don't effect greater change" vs "Get my hands dirty, and make a difference" type dilemmas. Because on one hand I can save the orphans now but it doesn't resolve why there are so many orphans in need of saving, it just kicks the can down the road, or I could purposefully let the orphans die, sabotaging the efforts to save them, pin the atrocity on the corporation in a false flag, and use the outrage to overthrow corpo control over the colony. One make you feel good about yourself because you did the right thing but everyone still suffers as a result, and the other makes you feel gross for the terrible things you did, but now everyone on the colony is free and people will argue endlessly about which one is the 'right' thing to do.
>>715957236>after epilogueWhy did you finish the game?

>>715963872No, but out of everybody, Ellie wasn't too bad.
First game's fucking awful. It's poorly designed and halfassed. There's a location early in the game that speaks to how halfassed it is. Right outside of the starting town, there's a bunch of buildings, and in one them, you can jump on crates to get up to the second floor of one, and it serves not purpose at all. Doesn't offer a stealth alternative. Offers no loot. No content whatsoever. It's just a path back down via stairs. Whole game sucks ass.

>>715956687 (OP)The game is going to flop and that is a good thing. I am not happy about people losing jobs (seriously) but this game represents a lot of wrong in the industry.

We don't want $80 games that are selling you DLC, season passes, and early access too.
>>715965716That's cool and all but you're completely ignoring gamepass, which this shovelware was made for, any additional profits outside of that ecosystem are just nice bonus and NOT the point, I mean look at all the preorder bonuses and seasons passes and editions on Steam, they're literally abusing you like a brain damaged retard with a fat wallet, you get all of that shit "for free" on gamepass
>>715966340Nowhere near enough people are gonna sign up for gamepass to play it to recoup the cost. Unless Obsidian is fully subsidized by Microsoft and they experience no layoffs then the game will absolutely be a flop. I know Microsoft owns them, but they own plenty of studios and close them or fire half the staff.
Then again, Avowed probably didn't turn much of a profit either and maybe they're just throwing darts at the board and hoping that their one studio with some ancient goodwill will somehow generate them some games of note.

>>715966638I remember reading gamepass is in a "sustainable" place for now and that's good enough for microsoft, muh flops don't matter, what matters is to keep making new shovelware so that people don't cancel their sub
>>715964828Quality doesn't matter, the game pass needs RPGs and Obsidian's job is to develop more game pass RPGs.
Even the $80 price tag is just there to convince you get a subscription (and hopefully forget to cancel it) instead of buying it on Steam/Epic/etc.
>>715965279Veilguard is godawful, but allegedly it still sold +1.5mil copies.
Either nerds don't watch trailers or they are really that desperate for a new game with swords, numbers and fuckable elves.
I'll probably try it.
I don't know, my problem with Outer Worlds I think is that it's what people try to claim Fallout is, staunchly anti-capitalist.
But the response from Fallout devs is always the same. They weren't interested in making a firm political statement any way in particular, they just wanted to present some interesting options that were fun thinking about, even if that meant presenting brutal authoritarianism as a potentially viable solution. They wanted intrigue in an RPG. Outer Worlds doesn't really have that much intrigue.
>the corporations are short-sighted, stupid and brutal because of course they are
>their citizens are brainwashed and immoral because of course they are (this is sometimes presented in an interesting way)
>they're destroying the galaxy in a global warming analogue because of course they are
Like damn, a corporation with the purpose of chasing profit with no oversight will pursue endless growth to the point of self-destruction? I don't need to discover that.

I actually enjoyed the first, but always felt like it was one of those games where a sequel could smooth out the rough edges. From what I can tell, there's little effort to do that, their track record is rough (Avowed isn't exactly filling me with hope for modern Obsidian), and they're charging an arm and a leg for it.
I hope it flops if anything because of the price. This reeks of Microsoft's doing honestly. Outer Worlds isn't some massive franchise. Why make it the sacrificial lamb here? Especially considering the themes of the game. It's hilarious how out of touch it is.
>>715971701>I hope it flops if anything because of the priceSorry bro they'll count JewPass downloads and it'll be a huge success.
>>715971809Microsoft says that, but it clearly does not count. Every studio is getting cuts, even ones they tout as having a lot of engagement on gamepass. They basically have the studios make a game, put it on gamepass, and then cut half the studio after but keep the game there in hopes that at some point the cost will be recouped via one person a year signing up for that game specifically.
Obsidian probably only avoided layoffs due to them having like 3 games in the works, I can easily see layoffs hitting them too once they finish up some of these games.
>>715971809With how much Microsoft loves laying people off and pumping/dumping devs (see Arkane), I would be surprised if that didn't happen to Obsidian. They don't make giant releases. Hell, they don't even make games to the quality they used to.
They're the exact, smaller kind of dev that would get the axe for not immediately selling a billion copies of a game.
