>looks like crap (open MW solves this, and honestly I think it has its charms, but yeah it looks like a college student's attempt at a MMO from 2000)
>combat kind of sucks, hated on too hard by people who've only put in an hour in game, but again has its issues
>novel's worth of text you have to read
Yet I feel like I'm literally living in this world. I come home to my tiny apartment in Vivec, from getting my butt whooped by orcs, realize I only needed to kill one of them, and only after I get cured of a disease I got off a random rat. Feels like I'm in this world, for as grimy and duplicitous as it is. Why is it so immersive? Never experienced this in another game.

Morrowind has the best worldbuilding in video games, period. It does so many things right and yet the industry has done nothing to learn from it. Savor the experience because there's nothing else like it.

Agreed, it's actually made oblivion tough to play for me as a result of this. Like yeah oblivion is fun, but so much of what was great about Morrowind was stripped from it, and its settlements, while beautiful, feel cookie cutter and artificial compared to Vvardenfell

My biggest issues with Morrowind that really hurt the worldbuilding would be
>encyclopedic NPCs
>incredibly small towns
>little effect on the world in general with the exception of finishing the game and clearing the blight

It's the sum of many many details really. MW stumbles a lot in the execution of many immersive mechanics but it makes up for it with abundance in detail quality.

Yeah I take your point
>incredibly small towns
2002, plus if you overlay Balmora onto the Imperial City in Oblivion its actually almost as big. The towns feel like provincial settlements on a backwater island, which is way more realistic imo than Cyrodil as it is portrayed in Oblivion supposedly being the heart of this continent spanning empire.
>little effect on the world in general with the exception of finishing the game and clearing the blight
valid criticism but again I'll chalk that up to its time

It's not, it's full of copypasted dungeons and interiors, and you level your acrobatics by spamming the space bar. You're conflating immersion with mind numbing. It's too much effort to play anything else so you retreat into "games" like this.

This is about Morrowind, not oblivion

I think it makes sense that people who live in similar circumstances would have similar opinions on most things. The wiki dialogue system is extremely efficient at delivering info and lore, and the game has so much lore that it can't afford not to be efficient about it.

I just don't think everyone should be so willing to dump info at you. Their class/race should determine their responses, with paupers and commoners being less learned than something like a priest and giving you less specific info. A priest or dunmer would be willing to tell you the name of the nearby daedric ruin and what prince it's related to but a warrior would just tell you the best way to kill the shit in it.

All elder scrolls games are bad. If the only thing you can compare a game to is shitty games, well, it's a shit game. It's like that patriciantv guy who acts like morrowind is the second coming of christ and when you check his channel he exclusively plays the most mind numbing slop. If you've only played trash your opinion is worthless.

You're probably right, there are some dialogue responses locked behind NPC disposition but they're few and far between. Here should have been much more and disposition should have been more meaningful in general. Being a member of a rival faction should have had much bigger disposition penalties, too. It seems like your Personality attribute just solves everything.

Eh, something sorta similar exists in the game. For example if you have to clear a bandit camp for the Fighters Guild, they'll just tell you the general direction because they don't know more than that. But if you have to visit a shrine for the Temple guild, the priests will pinpoint the exact shrine location on your map. They're one of the rare NPCs that do this sort of thing. The priests have to know shrine locations extremely well, since the Temple religion heavily relies on pilgrimages. You can also find a bunch of pilgrims who got lost in the wild because they went without a priest to guide them.

morrowind is one of those IQ test games. Maybe you love it, maybe you are indifferent, but if you hate it then its a good sign you are low IQ

There are mods for that, but they work on a town by town basis, so some towns have NPCs with vibrant personalities and new quests to come with it, and then you find a fishing village and they all talk about the same five things.
