What I've liked about these three weeks of speedrunds is that they've covered multiple different grounds of types of speedrun events so you get a bit of everything.

>ESA offered more pure run of the mill "just runs"
>GDQ offered the hatewatching, the cringekino, the carcrash, the outrage etc.
>ASM offered the comfier long runs and more relaxed low energy runs
>Dogwater offered the "bunch of friends dicking around being silly mostly trying to entertain"

ESA was also PS1 heavy, GDQ was nonrun/showcase heavy, ASM was long run heavy and Dogwater was Sonic Heavy

Yeah you can tell who organizes the event and who attends them by the types of runs they have:
>UKSG has a lot of sonic and point and click, clearly Argick and Tim
>ESA has a lot of PS1 games particularly Spyro, clearly Playstation nation particularly LumieLaura
>ASM has a lot of JRPGs and Nintendo, clearly Syo and Werster

So what we can learn from GDQ is that Sent doesn't like speedruns as this year, his first GDQ he organized, was the most nonruns in history

GDQ has been slowly shifting to noruns over recent years but the GDQ = Speedruns identity is apparently set in stone, there is a clear cutoff point where people will lose interest if there aren't any speedruns as shown by the dismal viewership and criticisms this year. Going full misc. video game content will not work for the event.

That's fine for some places, but in speedruns, IMO, you can only really be competitive with yourself. It's why I look at an actual speedrun race and I think "Oh boy, two separate runs happening at the same time!" because if I don't, it's just ass.
Anonymous No.715988694 >>715989071

Truly competitive running is the communities where you get people at odds with each other, doing their best to keep skips/glitches/tactics/whatever to themselves, makes for a pretty shit community.

It's why you get stuff like bingo races that came out of people doing it between themselves to spice shit up, and so events decided it's the next big thing to show.

Yeah, some of the best communities I've ran in are the ones where you've people who are incomprehensibly good and are pretty much set at the top for life, and still all they want to do is share as much as they can with the rest of the community and help them to get good too.

These threads redpilled me more on charts and how they shit up the threads. Sure there was chart and ratings arguments on day one which was pretty silly as nobody was charting but since then the threads have been pretty chill. It's like they came pre-prepared to sperg out about chartanon and charts in general and realized they weren't here so they fucked off. I do think they're better without them as it causes people to sperg out less. But it could be that all the spergs just left after day one because they saw boring "just runs" and it has nothing to do with charts. Who knows, either way pretty good threads.

Charts were a double-edged sword, they made it easier to show a more cohesive thing than the tier lists but then they became much more of a focus for a lot of the thread, and brought in stuff like the HI-FI Rush idiocy and conspiracy shit about the charts themselves.

Some anons tried to do rating anyway as a "vibe check" but you can get an idea of how a run was received from the thread itself, without begging for somebody to knock out a chart using that shit.

I think what people forget is that they can do their own chart anyways if they want. Nothing's stopping them. Like for example last year some anon started doing a chart with colored bars instead of dots, and I remember one GDQ had another anon doing a pretty complex chart with a lot of data, and I remember 2022 had two chart anons, and you can still post tier lists. Nothing is stopping them. Especially if they think the one doing them is skewering ratings, just do their own.

I think what a lot of people forget is that they're not signifiers for objective run quality but more so /v/s opinion on stuff. So like it was funny this year to see GDQ be a sea of red, or if you see a run and it's got this massive spread or a bunch of Z's and A's its a signifier something major happened and to maybe check it out.

The problem will always be bad actors stirring the pot. I don't ever remember it being a genuine problem until 2019 when avatarfag tierlists came about and the inevitable
>grrrr, people were rating this run the way I didn't like it, I'm going to nudge things into my favor
>grrrr, he didn't tier this the way I wanted it, I'm going to bitch and moan for several threads and make it everyone's problem.
Charts help address 90% of the problems but there's only so much that can be done about the remaining 10% being drama-based.
I'm glad non GDQ/ESA threads aren't mostly subjected to that autism since I can actually enjoy the runs and not have to deal with it. Although again it seems still there's a small handful of freaks that keeps trying to make it everyone else's problem.
Even shutting the fuck up most of the time and not replying under the chartfag persona helped curb prior problems over the years, but that seems to not be enough as evident by that small handful of freaks.

My short opinion on each event feel free to post yours

>ESA: Was alright, nothing outstanding or worth talking about but still decent. They played it very safe this year which means a lot of "it's a run" runs, but I understand why they did that and I'd have done the same. They had to prove to everyone that they can still pull off an event and have it not descend into a shitshow of drama, and see if people still care about ESA and would donate to it and watch it. My biggest feedback would be not to have the stream on 24/7when there's no event on as its a hindrence more than a benefit
>GDQ: The worst one. I know its memed on that every GDQ is the worst but I thought both 2024 ones were the best in a while and 2025 actually managed to descend into C tier okay territory. But holy shit this year was bad. The most theater kid skits in GDQ history and the most non runs in history. More importantly the neporuns, hooooly shit the nepo runs, when you look into it more it's crazy, nearly every runner connected back to a staff member somehow. It's clear that Sent is a complete pushover and staff took advantage of that. My biggest feedback is to show some fucking speedruns.
>ASM: The comfy marathon. Time zones meant I missed a lot though and it was usually some JRPG on when I was awake, but they actually made the JRPGs enjoyable. I liked the casualness of it all. My biggest feedback is maybe don't connect so many long runs together and spread them out more.
>Dogwater: Funny but maybe a little too Dogwatery for me. Was a good balance to ASM. My biggest feedback is to get more of a hand on tech shit.

I find it funny because the freak outs are always over the most pointless runs that will be forgotten about by the next event. There's usually only one or two runs that are remembered about beyond the event. Like AGDQ this year if I think back, there's Crazy Taxi with the live band and that's all I remember really, then AGDQ 2024 was the Mario Sunshine redemption run.

I thought I'd elaborate on the ASM feedback one a bit: I felt the first three days were quite loaded with longer runs outside of the JRPG that they put on at dead hours than the last few days where there was less longer runs and I thought it would have made more sense to spread them out. I understand that there were a lot of blocks so some games had to be kept together but again those blocks were in the later days rather than the earlier days which had only one block, the sleepover which was basically "put on Pajamas" so it wasn't really game related.

I've always been pro put your JRPGs on during the graveyard shift to fill time overnight so everyone else can sleep. I think its the perfect spot for JRPGs and GDQ is always stupid and puts them on at prime time because some staff member is running it. Its just I felt like the first three days of ASM were quite loaded with long runs outside of JRPGs and then the last few days were loaded with shorter runs.

I think outside of the JRPG at graveyard shift, I prefer a long run to be balanced with lots of short runs after rather than long runs one after the other.

Here's a game for you or anyone else to play on rewatch. Or hell just do it by checking out GDQ's schedule. Check each runner and couch from SGDQ this year and try to link them back to one of the games commitee. The amount that do is wild. They're either one of the committee themselves, a run that a committee member can couch on, a known close friend of a committee member, or they run the same game as one of the committee members.

don't get why so many preferred ESA to ASM this year, I guess nostalgia, steam 2 and threads but imo ASM had a better mix of FUN, quality runs and non-run content.
Also no contest on the runner performance between the common ESL mumbling/autists and the jovial humorous functional human Aussies. pretty much perfect even for what I want as a viewer

didn't mind the RPGs nice way to ease into that days slate (burger going to bed at 5AM)

>Be Burger
>Catch the relaxed morning runs and get a decent amount of the cool runs
>Be Euro
>Only catch the late night JRPG runs and some of the morning runs
And then obviously ESA is the opposite, so I'm being asked to compare the best of ESA versus the ASM night shift and as someone who doesn't really care about JRPGs the choice is obvious.

Anyway I preferred Dogwater to both, thought GDQ was worse than both and can only assume prime time ASM was better but... I was sleeping

People have always liked let's plays and twitch streams since it allows you to experience a game while doing something else yourself. Speedruns are like that except the readers digest condensed version, so you can experience many different games in a single watch sesh. However if you just watch a single speedrunner stream, typically they only play one game and restart it often, so people like these events instead that shift across multiple people and games. Occasionally the people will have something interesting to say about the history of the game, or more rarely they might actually do something skillful and impressive, or they might just have some quirk or drama around them that can be interesting to see. It's more interesting than television and you can leave it playing on second monitor all week without needing to take time to find things to watch all the time. That's the real draw of these things. The actual skillful play mostly died out a long time ago since there's only a handful of games that are actually challenging and competitive to speedrun.
