Shillup just launched one, I haven't checked it out yet but honestly the idea of reading long form vidya content feels like a relic of the past now. If anything I would rather subscribe to one substack whose author and topics I like vs going to a gaming site with a broad editorial focus

Modern game journalists are people who couldn't make it in their first choice careers and lowered themselves to working in the games industry.
The older game journalists are just tired and depressed. You can see the dead look in their eyes and their overall lack of enthusiasm.
Regardless both groups have one thing in common. They are extremely out of touch with their potential audience so no one cares what they think anymore.
Modern game journalists are people who couldn't make it in their first choice careers and lowered themselves to working in the games industry.

I've always liked Jeff and I still listen to his podcast but the poor guy doesn't even seem to like the industry anymore. I like his perspective from being around so long but he clearly doesn't have the time or passion to actually cover new releases. That's a young man's game I guess so now that traditional journalism is dead all of the young people are on YouTube. He's real strength is his interview skills, his E3 interviews were always really entertaining. None of the young people have the connections or social skills to do this so it's probably a lost art at this point

He's got enough parasocially captive patrons to keep him afloat forever, but the show is just kind of sad. It's clear these days he had one of the ultimate "right place, right time" careers and now that the times have changed watching this 50 year old try and keep up with 25 year younger twitch streamers is rough. Nextlander is even more dire. NES ranking is fun though.
