I've actually seen this in MMO communities. I asked what was up about it to someone inside one such group.

Apparently, they thought it was warranted by some past experiences that led to drama. These alleged situations had once been unthinkable in those groups.
People started drama around a girl that entered the group. They started to compete for attention, validation and other behaviours that had previously been absent inside that group. Instead of allowing more girls to have a more diverse group that could function with a new dynamic, they decided to go back to a time where they didn't have those situations, thus, no girls allowed.

Maybe some other communities had similar experiences or reached the same wrong conclusion through a different path.

The only communities that I've had a positive experience in this regard were the ones that explicitly wanted a diverse and inclusive LGBTQ+ community.
