Terrible. I dedicated myself to it for over 5 years and got maybe 1.5k subs.
Unless you started before or during around 2015 your channel won't take off, barring a miracle, like a viral video. But even then, your next video will bomb unless it's almost identical to it. think of the "Where do the Rivers in Skyrim Go" guy.
Youtube makes it so you have to upload consistently, to incentivise you to pump out garbage, but you also have to fit a niche so they can pen you into a group of creators, so you can't experiment.
Some chubers are whitelisted in the algo, like Joseph Anderson, whose thumbnails and titles are as plain as his content, but I've seen tens of insanely talented people just not get their content pushed to the right people and quit, after slaving away for months, making longform essays with more passion and creativity something that just isn't worth it, so it's mainly just recycled crap.
The people who comment seem to really like what I do, so there's an audience for it, but youtube wants me making content every week until I die of malnutrition otherwise it's back to 100-200 views a day despite over 25 longform essays in a very short timespan.

I've heard that viewers and subs from youtube shorts don't necessarily translate well to normal video views. Is that the case for you as well or did you manage to break that ceiling?
Rin Penrose, a chuuba (yeah I know), is a good example of how you can get hundreds of millions upon millions in shorts views and get hundreds of thousand of subs, but her standard streams and videos were far from that, pulling only about 20k on average i think.
Anti Prophet is another who got big from shorts, but the moment he took a break of a month or so, the algorithm fucked his channel super hard.

To be honest million sub channels just aren't a thing anymore. If I see a channel where the guy gets consistent 10k views he would have 100k subs or less. Even consistent 6 digit views have 6 digit sub counts never breaking to a million. I saw one small channel go from 5k subs to 20k for being disillusioned and constantly trashing Nintendo and Switch 2. That doesn't look like a huge jump but in this world that's a huge success.

Not always. I did good numbers with a few longform videos about video games lately. The problem is being consistent with uploading, given how long they take to make. Youtube will push it for a while and then artificially kill the views by no longer pushing it to anyone. I genuinely don't mind. I did video essays before doing Let's Plays, and some were successful, but most weren't despite the excruciating amount of time and effort I put in. You eventually learn that your subscriber count means literally nothing and that most people don't even use their subscription tab. I eventually realized that I never even liked video essays in the first place. I never watch them so why should I be making them and stressing out about it? I've always loved Let's Plays. I love watching people actively enjoy things, rather than talk about video games in a weird philosophical manner. To each their own though. I'll still support anons who go that route. NTA, but this is my latest short's engagement. From my experience, you're generally not going to get a high views alone. The algorithm is constantly shit testing you for likes and retention, and probably other things that are way too big brained for me. It's getting to a point though where I can almost guess my video's 'final' view numbers off the initial retention rate. I get something like a 55% retention? Flop.

Yep. First thing I noticed in my analytics. The vast majority get their content via the home tab, but having a small audience with notifications on who immediately watch your video can give it a nice initial boost.
That said, if that's a big factor then it's probably over for us anyway.
I really do think Youtube shadowbans most new channels by design, but viewer habits mean you have to make the same kind of content to get recommended to people who watch only THAT content type, which is very limiting.

But yeah, click-through rate is one they love, too. That said, I've seen videos with 20k views and nearly 5k likes, with over 1k comments, still not get pushed. With that kind of engagement, they should be pushed to the heavens.

Unironically how do I find niche content/ creators on YouTube organically?
My current front page is pretty lackluster. When I try to search for content all I get is slop or unrelated slop.

Not bad honestly. Got a little over 4000 subs. Most videos tend to get in the couple to several thousand views range, occasional outliers with 10k+ or only few hundred though.

Haven't been able to upload as often as I want for a long time and likely main reason my videos do well, relative to my size, despite a video a month or so at best, is not a lot of people in my niche. Had to take a hiatus just as things were really starting to grow due to more shit coming up.

Your main issue is that English is not your primary language. I'm sorry if this comes across as rude, I don't mean to offend. I'm simply explaining why someone would immediately click off. You speak really slow and it almost feels like my energy is being drained. You should constantly practice your English, at least to the point that you can notice that you're speaking faster without making mistakes. I've realized the number of gaming channels I watch has been thinning over the years and the ones I do still follow have been scaling back their upload frequency. Ones that used to upload every day or every couple of days now only see new videos once every week or so. The quality of content a lot of them are providing is getting staler and more formulaic as well.
