You also want to learn how to train your horses anyways even if it isn't optimized, since the entire point of the game is making strong horses in to career so that your next horse in career can use her as an inspiration to be stronger, with the eventual (optional but encouraged) off ramp to team trials PVP

You can also check turf/dirt aptitude. Is El Condor or Cap better for dirt? See what you've got
You get PVP points for skill activations so without going into detail, have enough Wit to use the skills as well
Also just making a few judgment calls on who goes where will probably give you enough of an edge against auto-fillers in C3
Then if you care to do so, re-run characters for better results to slot in and rank up

Haru Urara is probably one of the easiest to get to the finals. She's really strong in her niche. My first try playing her without ever even getting close to the finals, I made it to 2nd place of the semi final.
