Pete's Dragon should have been a separate Pokémon or maybe Magikarp's evolution. Dratini feels pretty pointless, and Dragonair could have just evolved into Gyarados with the original Dragonair design, but with the wings probably should have evolved into an Amphithere with angel-esque wings, or a Quazacotl design. I guess ideally Dragonair would have gotten a split evolution in gen 2 to cover one of the other options (I guess Lindwurm if they went with Amphithere, to keep it consistent).

I guess if they went with an Amphithere/Lindwurm split evolution, the Megas would grow extra limbs, and we'd get a kind of angel serpent Gardevoir looking Mega, and either a 4 armed Gyarados looking Lindwurm or a Salamander.

I think the biggest problem with it is that it doesn't go far enough with the feathers. Give it more of those feather tufts from its arms and legs and layer them a little. Replace its normal wings with feathered wings in addition to the feathered wings it has on its head. Give it a second pearl on its tail and a few on it's neck/chest like they're copying from dragonair. Give it a much longer horn and spiral it. It's a fine enough direction with the clumsy elegance motif but it doesn't take it far enough so it comes off flat and empty.

But lets be real here. Most of the people truly mad about this design are probably the same faggots who believe the rumor that dragonite and gyarodos's evolution paths were switched and were expecting this to be something edgy and "badass".

2. The fat dorky look makes it look like some fairytale dragon, which is either cool or gay depending on your perspective.
3. Dragonite was the first rare pseudo legendary Pokemon, used by Lance of the Elite Four (important to both gen 1 and gen 2 players). The only Dragon type in Gen 1. That made it unique and cool.

Nowadays I doubt many would pick Dragonite as their favorite, but it made sense why people liked it.

Going through all those Game Freak leaks last year made it seem like they actually still have it and can design pokemon just like 1st and 2nd gen based on the leaked scrapped pokemon concept artwork and what changed was going 3D as it took them longer to make and model. Time being the real issue as the leaks showed they only get like a few short years to make these Pokemon games. They have a strict time frame to make these games basically.

One thing I started to noticed when looking at those leaks was the type of pokemon that got scrapped from the concept art. Those would be really well designed with a lot of details. GF would choose the simpler designs because it would easier to model. So that's why we get all these round, simple, and bland designs.

Fan art is CONFIRMED to affect how they pick finalized designs. We know this from the huge Gamefreak leak that happened. They don't ever release a new mon or form if it looks like fan art. There was a flying evolution for eevee that got cut because the designed looked like something a fan drew.

So fully expect all the new mega forms to be weird and goofing looking. There is already hundreds of "cool" fan art designs for every remotely popular pokemon.
