It's interesting how there really was that time where it felt like immersive sims and "console WRPGs" were considered the pinnacle of game development, like the end of history. Major American devs making them were treated like a new Rome in the industry and then in the 2010s Rome burned again.
For those who already found Fallout 3, BioShock, or Mass Effect 1 to be lackluster echoes of older games, there was not much of a surprise, more like a "oh, you guys are only now realizing you're playing crap now that the devs are visibly running out of development money after wasting it all on graphical fidelity?" In the future I think it will be seen as similar to the crashing and burning of the collectathon genre.
