2008 when Mass Effect 2 came out and EA turned our beautiful RPG with a great story into a third person shooter with literally no plot. It was the beginning of the end.

Unironically it's when Sony entered the market with PlayStation. Many people will say nuh-uh but it's 100% the starting point: a company that doesn't care about video games using its money to force itself onto store shelves. Then it got worse with Microsoft doing the same thing. (but le Microsoft games on PC) not the same thing.

You can actually feel the effects of The Last of Us long after it came out. Every third person shooter after just tried to be that game. I liked SH2, but I could tell which game they were copying. It's just Maria instead of Ellie.

Elden ring showed the world that lazy devs can still milk the nigger console ps4 for another 10 years. But the cracks were showing even before then with games like watchdogs and sark souls 2 getting MASSIVE downgrades so that their respective console versions did not look like pure shit by comparison.

So yeah. Consoles and consolefags literally ruined gaming simply by existing.

I don't know what these people need. I think they're just normalniggers who are bitter during and after their slave duties, and so we have to hear them on 4chan. If I play the same game I played when I was a teenager, I still think it's good. People are just suffering outside of gaming and decide to blame the games.

There have always been bright spots but things gradually got worse from like 2000 forward, got MUCH worse from 2010 forward, and then got better again from 2015 forward.

2011-2014 were so bad I would probably struggle to put together a list of even ten games I like from those years. I was mostly watching anime and playing my PS2 backlog at the time. Honestly without the DS you could push that range all the way back to 2006. The window between Okami and Bloodborne/Splatoon is tremendously depressing if you don't want to play handheld games.

Between 2009-10. Before that we still had decent games like Crysis, CoD4, l4d1, tf2(Valve was rly going strong), ME1 etc

People already do. That's why moot fought to keep PS1 excluded from /vr/ (a losing argument, as PS1 arguably feels more retro than SNES/Genesis because of how poorly Early 3D aged).

History of games shows that people who LOVE games being put in charge of making games is what gets good results. You'd think this would be fucking obvious but major publishers and devs keep promoting and putting in charge people who don't even try to hide their contempt for the thing they're in charge of. We got Dark Souls and Bloodborne, probably the single brightest spot of hope gaming had in the 2010s, because a 33 year old guy who was tired of his job played Ico and fell in love with videogames. Sony's complete and total neglect of Bloodborne since, and abusive mistreatment of Demon's Souls, speaks to how badly businessmen fuck up the art form. That's why gaming is healing right now, because game superfans have been empowered to make their own stuff through easy indie game distribution.

You fags are so retarded it gives me a headache. Everyone knows that gaming declined heavily starting in 2005, but there have still been plenty of great games since then. If you think there are literally no good games, and worse you think the cutoff is 2015, you must be a special kind of retarded because I don’t even know how that happens

A lot of people would say BioShock Infinite or ME3. It's interesting how there really was that time where it felt like immersive sims and "console WRPGs" were considered the pinnacle of game development, like the end of history. Major American devs making them were treated like a new Rome in the industry and then in the 2010s Rome burned again.

For those who already found Fallout 3, BioShock, or Mass Effect 1 to be lackluster echoes of older games, there was not much of a surprise, more like a "oh, you guys are only now realizing you're playing crap now that the devs are visibly running out of development money after wasting it all on graphical fidelity?" In the future I think it will be seen as similar to the crashing and burning of the collectathon genre.

Since 2006, most here were in their early teens at that time and so have nostalgia for the brown and bloom military shooter era, but that was the beginning of the death of videogames as a medium, because it paved the way for every single shitty practice that has now become normalized. Chopping the game content to bits to sell it bit by bit as DLC and the death of "expansion pack" game content delivery method that offered significant additions bordering on a new game on the same engine in scope? Check. Nickel and diming you for insignificant shit? Check. Live service slop via platforms like Steam and Games For Windows live? Check. 75 FoV autoaim consolecuck shooters? Check. Videoames hitting the mainstream media as "cybersports"? Check. Rise of the "movie games" and "we want to appeal to wider audience?" Check. Faggotry and DEIshit in RPG's? Check. It was as if the floodgates of the abyss had opened, surging forth with a tidal wave of slop and the retarded cattle gorged themselves on it without stopping. Now, almost twenty years later, the very same people are asking themselves "How could this happen?"
