>undersold the original thus killing the momentum of the series
>1-2 million sales tops
>reception upon release was lukewarm
>small dedicated SH fanbase have re-written the narratives so that "everyone knows" that SH2 was this super successful popular game that was an amazing masterpiece and pushed gaming to new heights.

Is there a bigger example of a fanbase re-writing history?

yes because it's a worse game, they ruined it and from there the way was only downhill
>was an amazing masterpiece
yes it was, it deserves that title regardless of its shortcomings, you see we tend to re-evaluate things over time, a movie like blade runner bombed in box office yet all the decades later it's still remembered fondly as one of the best sci-fi/cyberpunk movies ever made with many paying homages to it and making special events/showings at the cinema for the anniversaries

>Silent Hill 2 didn't sell well in Yurop or Japan. The majority of its sales were in America.

That actually makes a TON of sense, since it was the Americans who loved the game, and the ones who reworked the rest of the games into Sh2 clones. Which is odd, sicne SH1 sold but SH2 didn't, so why not base it on the original game?

The fucking guy who left to make the Siren games should have stuck around. I bet he'd have made the Sh sequels exciting and sell a lot.

You can't have cult classics in the age of social media. Once anyone of influence (even if they legit like a thing) lets it out that "thing you thought was bad is actually good" then everyone and their mother latches onto it and will act incredulous toward anyone who doesn't know how awesome it is.

lol

This is based on Konami's own numbers. They never released game by game numbers, but have always said the amount the series has sold. now it's 11.5 million, and the latest SHR sold 2 million. Sato says Sh1 sold 2 million, so you're left with 7.5 million across all the sequels, re-releases, ports, etc.

That works out to like 1.3 million per game. Obviously not every game is gonna sell that (Play Novel probably only sold a few hundred thousand tops), but shows you how dreary the sales are.

Around time when the Sh movie came out they were saying similar numbers, that if you worked out it was like 1.2 million per game. I can't find those posts now.

Nowhere in the fanbase's narratives are "oh the game was a total sales bomb btw".

NTA but you are retarded. All Team Silent games sold well, especially considering their budgets. Konami simply wanted Call of Duty numbers. Konami also wanted to turn the series into FIFA by forcing Team Silent to release every new SH game every single year. That's why they split the team to make SH3 and SH4 at the same time. They also forced Team Silent to change the vision of SH3 like 3 times (they originally wanted the game to be a fucking arcade style rail shooter because those were popular in Tokyo in the 2000s). Akira and Ito even said that they and everyone else in Team Silent felt that their role as artistic creators had taken a back seat right after SH2.

Konami disbanded Team Silent because of their own corporate greed. They disbanded the team because they believed that "western devs are the future" and it would be a lot less costly to outsource everything to random devs instead of doing anything in-house. They are still operating under this cold corporate logic

I find silent hill 2 hate is a little overblown.
is the enemy and boss roster a step back from 1? absolutely, it's thin, no way around it.
is it such a problem that the game is non functional as a horror title? are you literally bewildered at things being a non threatning cakewalk?
imo no, with the caveat that you play sh2 on hard enemies are reasonably effective at giving you the basic stress necessary for horror atmosphere. their aggro range is reasonably wide and they are aggressive in cornering you, at any point where you need to collect an item or navigate a cramped space enemies become a threat, if you make an errant move you can get swamped and put into warning health. I think with the aid of a looming threat like pyramid head stringing the player along it's just enough to get the game over the finish line.

*hospital chase and twin pyramid heads on hard
yes this shit was badly balanced, I can't really defend it but I do not think it makes hard mode unplayable overall(and sh3 on hard has bs to match)

tldr
played on hard sh2 fits roughly comparable with the experiences of 1 and 3.

Silent Hill 2 sales suffered because most people who played budget Resident Evil didn't like it and didn't want to waste more money on a sequel. It turned out to be far superior to the original, so people who did play it loved it.

>NTA but you are retarded. All Team Silent games sold well, especially considering their budgets. Konami simply wanted Call of Duty numbers.

That's the old fan narrative that doesn't make any sense. Mean old Konami didn't support the series, and had unrealistic expectations. This puts the blame 100% Konami.

From Konami's perspective:
>first game is a suprize hit at 2 million sales
>director leaves and promote others
>put a lot of money and budget promoting the sequel
>it's a sales dud with LESS sales than the original
>have no faith in them, so slash the budget and dev time for 3 and 4 and make them at once
>those games also have middling sales
>disband the team entirely
>hire westerners since American sales were always higher and there is more fan interest there
>western games are also middling sales
>shelve the entire series

Their decision making wasn't completely wrong, and may have created a death spiral for the series, but it wasn't baseless. The games just weren't selling, and Konami isn't a charity, but a money making operation. If sales were increasing each game, then it's very likely Team Silent wouldn't have been disbanded.

Silent Hill was always Konami's lazy attempt to cash in on the Resident Evil craze. When the numbers didn't materialize, they canned it. Simple as. They did the same exact thing with the SH2 remake. Capcom is making bank on RE remakes, so they jumped on the bandwagon with a remake of their own, outsourced to a cheap studio, for a quick buck. It was apparently a little more successful this time, though.

>2+ million confirmed sales for the PS2 version ALONE is not a "dud", especially by 2001 standards.

{{citation needed}}

We have Sato's resume saying 2 million for SH1, but note he conveniently doesn't mention SH2's sales? And we have Konami saying their overall sales of the series over the years, which works out to the mid 1.5-ish million per game.

The issue is that sales were lower. Why should Konami have faith in the team or the series after that? Why increase the budgets why not lower them?

You can criticize that it created a death spiral for the series, with less polish leading to less and less excitement for each game. But their financial decision making isn't random.

This is correct. I think SH2 was really the wrong game to start the PS2 era with, and they should have done something more similar to 1 and impress people. Sh2 should have been a sidestory without a number released afterwards. It's a slow arsty game, and more akin to Ico than the original SH1.

Silent Hill 1 was a smash hit, you moron. Silent Hill 2 selling fewer copies on a system that was just released very recently is a long fucking way from it being le understated gem for connoiseurs that "didn't click with games right away". You don't want to talk about videogames: you just want to trade idiotic factoids you've read somewhere with other zoomers and debate who has the better quality factoids from a time when you were 3 years old or maybe not even born. That in itself is a stupid enough way to spend your time, but to try to draw conclusions from your """knowledge""" and present them as fact to people who actually lived through it...damn.

>I aint gonna lie, I played Silent Hill 2 for about five minutes back in the day, laughed at the shitty animation of him swinging the pipe, and called the game gay.

Early section of the game is a horrible way to start, and that wooden plank is a horrible little starting weapon. You don't get any sense of power and it's pretty lame. Iron pipe has really strong swings behind it.

>and gore
no one with a worthwhile opinion would mention the latter as something they were expecting and disappointed by.

That's amazing since that's literally what happened.

The remake sold well enough for Konami to give the okay for a remake of the first SH game.

The original sold enough to spawn 2 sequels, spin-offs, and a shitty remake

well I think you are in luck. The next mainline SH game looks more like Siren than any previous entry in the series.
